  New magazine Carts

  news from my wife from the recent meeting is that our congregation will be recieving 2 new magazine carts for market witnessing.

  we live in a small market town in north yorkshire and have regular street markets.. the congregation is small (75+ publishers, -1 now) so it seems that this is being rolled out pretty conprehensivly now to all congs.

  i still have no info as to whether each congregation has to purchase these from the hq or costings per unit..

  regarding worldly people, shows or toys?

  etc...what quotes annoyed you the most?.

  for me it was "well, you have to remember, they're worldly"... "don't trust anyone who isn't in the truth" "they may be nice but they are not friends of jehovah"... just a few to name.

  Another favorite-being instructed to read James 4:4, to "cure" me from wanting to play with neighborhood children. My mother was such a piece of work, it's no wonder I no longer speak to her.

  One day dad tried to kill us all

  that's right, my dad tried to kill everyone in our house back in 1980. after the attempt was unsuccessful he pretended it was a boneheaded accident.

  one day while we were living in houston we were all told to go take a nap in our bedrooms.

  the next thing i remember was waking up and being told to go outside and sit in the yard.

  Bullet list of major (recent) changes

  it is with great interest that i recently read ceders article on the decline of the wts.

  his article along with many of the comments really drives home just how many major changes there have been in a fairly short peroid of time.. somewhere in the recent past i could swear that someone had posted a bullet list of major changes with the corresponding year.

  when i saw this (or something like it) my first thought was that this simple list made it all the more shocking; and since i have searched and cannot find anything like it.. so i dug around and started one of my own, please feel free to add/corrects events.

  It is with great interest that I recently read Ceders article on the decline of the WTS. His article along with many of the comments really drives home just how many major changes there have been in a fairly short peroid of time.

  Somewhere in the recent past I could swear that someone had posted a bullet list of major changes with the corresponding year. When I saw this (or something like it) my first thought was that this simple list made it all the more shocking; and since I have searched and cannot find anything like it.

  So I dug around and started one of my own, please feel free to add/corrects events. It may prove useful to demonstrate just how UN-progressive the WTS has become!

  * 1980's: Simplification program

  * 1990: Voluntary donation arrangement for literature

  * 1995/6: Generation change

  * 2005: first reduction in magazine production; monthy Awake/WT & monthy in-house WT

  * 2006: Bethel layoffs begin

  * 2007: change to 30 minute Public Talk

  * 2008: Overlapping generations

  * 2009: Elimination of Book Study as separate meeting

  * 2010: WTS begins closing/merging Branch facilities and selling branch properties

  * 2011: Credit card machines at assembly halls and conventions

  * 2012: begin selling Brooklyn properties

  * 2013: reduction in size of magazines

  knee replacement surgery

  friend in central usa is contemplating knee replacement surgery, any experiences from members of the board?.

  In our local hospital, we have a unit especially for joint replacement patients that I worked on for 2 1/2 years. I would suggest that if your friend is the least bit uneasy with his doctor's recommendation for joint replacement he should get a second opinion. It never hurts. If he feels confident about the diagnosis and feels comfortable with the surgeon proceed. This surgery generally takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours under general anesthesia.

  In my experience, he can expect his hospital stay to be about 4 days and to be discharged to his home with either home physical therapy(the therapist come to him) or out patient physical therapy (he goes to the therapist). OR discharged to a rehab facility where he would be an inpatient and have physical therapy a couple of times each day, usually for a 10-14 day stay. Usually that decision rests on how well the patient does with his therapy while still in the hospital.

  The incision is rather long and is usually closed with surgical staples that are removed in about 10 days. The wound is easy to care for. He should expect to have a drain in the knee for 2 to 3 days after surgery and to be prescribed blood thinning medication (for the prevention of blood clots) that will be taken for a short time after surgery. Medication taken by mouth can be used but most of our surgeons prescribed an injectable drug called Lovenox. It comes in a pre-filled syringe and the patient or a family member injects the medicine in the abdomen, usually once a day.

  Regarding pain: yes he can expect to have pain after his surgery, the nursing staff cannot make him pain free. Our patients came up from surgery with a pain pump, a device set to deliver medicine (usually demerol or morphine) on a continuous basis with the patient able to give himself extra medicine at timed intervals, they would have this through the first night after surgery. The next AM they would start on oral pain medications. While he will have surgical pain, he will note that the type of pain he had prior to surgery (usually because of bone rubbing on bone), is gone.

  He needs to expect to be gotten up fairly quickly after surgery, usually the next am, but maybe the evening after surgery. That depends on his doctor. He also needs to expect to use a walker for several weeks after surgery, if he lives alone it would be advisable for him to arrange for someone to come and spend a few weeks to help out.

  Lady Lee,

  In the past year I have had to take a "no contact" stance with my NPD mother and I have taken the time to finally address a number of physical problems; most of which are directly related to decades of piled up stress, a combination of her psychological and emotional abuse and JWism. I have wondered if it possible for anyone coming from this type of background to suffer from some degree of PTSD?

  she is fanatically religious, often keeps me on the phone for hours while she talks endlessly about the bible.

  Lady Lee's last comment is well worth consideration. Sometimes you really do have to say "I'm done." Mental illness can take many forms and personality disorders (I believe) can be some of the most difficult to deal with. When I first read your original post, I could not help but think you may be dealing with someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

  My mother has NPD. Being a JW made her worse, as the religion encouraged her controlling and mal-adaptative coping behaviors. One of her primary reasons for joining the religion "it would help me control my children"; then when we were grown and married, she decided she didn't "need" them anymore and walked away, leaving us stuck in hell.

  With a narcissistic, it's always all about them, how they feel, what they want or need. You're never good enough (unless you are the designated "Golden Child"), your feelings, ideas, beliefs etc. are invalid (unless they agree with hers). Boundaries are not respected and probably not even recognized.

  My mother, I've had to cut her off (go "no contact") for the sake of my sanity.

  Google "narcissistic personality disorder" and check out numerous articles, discussion boards and book listings, it may be helpful to you.
