has anyone learned speedreading?
by DanTheMan inbefore i joined jw's, i used to like to read, but during my 10 year stint in the borg i read almost no books at all (except the company-sanctioned reading, which lulls the reader into a mental stupor), save the occasional grisham novel or something fairly light like that.
i couldn't take anything that was too heavy or thought provoking, as it would create too much cognitive dissonance in my black/white jw mind.. i was just reading some "favorite book" threads, and i realize that there are literally hundreds of books that i would like to read.
however, i find that i am not a very speedy reader, and i also have difficulty concentrating, which results in my often having to re-read passages in order to get the author's point.. has anybody learned speed reading?

I was the product of a unique experimental reading program when I was in middle school during the 1970's. I love to read and still read much faster than many folks. I have married a bookstore owner and am in total book heaven!

DA=DF....Why?
by thinker inthe latest kingdom ministry states that disassociated persons are to be treated the same as disfellowshipped ones.
i have heard two explanations:.
1) those who da are assumed to be sinners who were apt to be disfellowshipped if they had stayed in the organization.

Thinker - you know my situation pretty well I think. I was disassociated without a committee meeting or a letter written. I was baffled. I think that our power-hungry PO decided to take it upon himself to be rid of me. Not that I regret leaving this cult. I just regret the resulting isolation from my family.

How Many Here Have Been Shunned?
by Reborn2002 inas most of you already know, the jehovah's witnesses are covering an article in their august kingdom ministry to be discussed the weeks of 8/19 and 8/26 which details how they are to shun and avoid those who are no longer members of their organization, even immediate family members.. .
undoubtedly this article has been written to reinforce to the rank&file jehovah's witnesses the shunning policy, so as to tighten the ranks and prevent members from having the opportunity to learn the abundant contradictions and hypocrisies found within watchtower doctrine and practice from any who may have left.. this policy also serves to divide families and attempt to shame or abuse those whom have chosen to no longer be jehovah's witnesses, for whatever reason.. that much is obvious.
in recent days this topic has been discussed in detail in various threads.

Add me to the shunned list... although I'm only selectively shunned. I manage the area's largest natural foods store and I have Witness customers who will willingly and openly speak to me, one of which is a local elder, and Witnesses who get pale and flee ffrom me like I have the plague. My family for the most part shuns me with the exception of my parents, who don't really shun me, but have to put on their "highly disappointed" act whenever possible.

Ned Flanders is a JW!
by Simon injust watching the simpsons where homer gets his thumb cut off.
there is a scene where ned is reading a story to one of his kids:.
"so, harry and his friends go straight to hell for practising witchcraft".

How about the one where Ned says, "Maude has gone to Bible camp to learn to be more judgemental..."

How could have Rutherford been a 'drunk'?
by wholewheat ini feel that the apostate's claims that rutherford was a drunk to be far fetched.
on the one hand, they claim that he was so drunk that the brothers at bethel shipped him to san diego to beth sarim, where he stayed drunk out of his mind, then on the other hand, they claimed that he ruled the society with an iron fist, that he was a dictator.
no drunk could have ruled the society like a dictator.

Rutherford a drunk? Why not... All of my nearest and dearest Witness friends had alcohol problems. including my ex. I think that the repression and suppression forced upon Witnesses leads many to look for an outlet, and since alcohol is acceptable to them, it often becomes their drug of choice. Oh and WW before you start the standard Witness holier than thou attitude, these were pioneers, servants and elders children.

Thank you for posting this. My only sibling, my brother, committed suicide. The burden of dealing with his mental health AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the burdens placed upon him by the WT were too much for him. I have 3 beautiful children who will never know their uncle. I so wish that my parents had ignored the advice" to wait on jehovah he'll fix everything..." and had gotten my brother the help that he needed WHEN he needed it. This cult has cost some of us so much.
