After 22 years as a baptized Witness and being da'ed I would now call myself religion phobic. It seems to be partly a post traumatic stress situation and partly an extreme appreciation of the freedom that I now experience. Do I consider myself spiritual? Much more so now than when I was simply following the company line.

curious
by bonnie38 ini wonder what the percentage is of ex-jws who become involved in other organized religions.
i had a discussion with a psychiatrist friend recently.
he told me that i am a "psychiatric anamoly," that most "devout" people who leave a religion will join another and become as devout in their new religion.

Riz,
TW conveniently forgets that I, too live in the same town as she and Thinker. Tw and I have lunch together every couple of weeks. We have been trying to woo a few of our fellow forumers to come and see us. So count me in...(My eldest daughter's name is Rachel). Come on out, the apple blossoms are lovely! -

Two Questions
by Yerusalyim ini have two questions, mostly for commited christians, though i'm sure somehow, that others will reply too.. 1) does prayer change god or his mind?.
2) if not, why pray?.
i have my own opinion on the subject, but i may be adjusting my understanding of god.. have fun!.

Yes, I'd say we are in agreement. Excellent point on the free will. Why even bother to instill it humankind if an "omniscient" presence is pulling all th strings anyway? Doesn't jibe for me. -

Dark Clouds:
I asked a friend of mine who is a Wicca priestess what the difference was between casting a spell and prayer. She said praying is asking for something to happen. Casting a spell is making it happen.I have been through a lot of rough stuff. It occurred to me several years into it, that it was my personal strength that got me through it. Not "God's" or anyone else's. From that point on, I haven't prayed.

My last birthday is on the 30th. I'll be 39! May I take a raincheck on the spankings and have my ex-husband beheaded?

Marijuana...should it be legalised?
by digderidoo inafter talkin in chat tonight....it has got me and a friend talkin about whether marijuana should be legalised.. my view...yes, .
i) who has the right to tell me what to do with my own body?.
ii) alcohol is a legalised drug....each year more deaths occur through alcohol abuse than marijuana usage.. iii) people smoke it anyway and the question is not bein addressed.. iv) it's great to get stoned!!!

I manage a health food store. How is marijuana different than any other "relaxing" herb? Have you ever used kava kava? Very much the same effect. I think that the legalization issue also is a political minefield. It's hard to maintain the "white male" status quo when consciousness expanding substances are widely available. I, too, believe that alcohol is far deadlier societally and absolutely refuse to touch the stuff. As for pot, I don't smoke it, but love to ingest it in other ways (cookies,etc.).
You should hear my friends laugh when I tell them that I first tried pot at 37!
