I read the whole thing in two days and I feel great. I haven't laughed as hard as I have like this in a long time from reading anything.
I've got to get the book because I started laughing at your first post.
"there is no shortage of modern apocalyptic thought: some christians thought that the second coming of jesus would coincide with the turn of the millenium, for technophobes the y2k scare was the secular equivalent of armageddon, and most cults declare the end-times every other wednesday (and alternating saturdays), while the new hot apocalypes theory on the block, is based on ancient mayan prophecies, says that the end of days is set for 2012.. .
these are just the current dates, but humanity has believed that we are living in the end-times since the beginning of time.
from the moment humans gained sentience, we immediately thought that everything around us was irrevocably fucked, and that it was just a matter of years - if not days - before the whole world came crashing down around us.

i was reading an article about this subject, and the author was explaining how so many new discoveries in space right now are hard to explain.. these comments were also made:.
livio (the author) also picks up on an intriguing theme left dangling in my lovely easter conversation with vatican astronomers guy consolmagno and george coyne the enduring question of whether mathematical truths, laws of nature, are discovered or invented.
he unapologetically offers his conclusion that there is no either/or answer possible here that mathematics is both invented and discovered.
I've always enjoyed the mystery. Once the facts are known about a particular subject, it often becomes mundane to me.
man reunites with gorilla.
be sure and listen to his message at the end also.. .

techniques to help calm and focus your mind toward mindfulness include following your breath, counting your breath, visualizing, relaxing, or focusing on a visual point (such as a mandala) or a sound (such as a mantra).. many religious, philosophical, and spiritual traditions throughout the world use different meditation techniques, and all of them may be useful for quieting mental clamor.. kinhin is the walking counterpart to zazen.. eventually, you will be able to sit in awareness without techniques and then carry that awareness throughout the day..
and once you become aware, it is amazing what you will notice.

the news from the gulf just keeps getting worse.
gulf oil spill more than 10x greater than thought: expertsby frank james and allison richards.
npr has learned that much more oil, 70,000 barrels a day or more than ten times the official estimate, is gushing into the gulf of mexico from the deepwater horizon pipe, based on scientific analysis of the video released wednesday.. that's the equivalent of one exxon valdez tanker full every four days.

his thoughts on honesty and love were very helpful to me.
i was able to better understand myself and those around me.
i didn't read the final portion of his book on religion, as i quickly lost interest.. however, just today, i read an interview with dr. peck from a few years ago.
I didn't know what to make of "People of the Lie" when I read it. For the most part, I enjoyed the book until he started babbling on and on about demon possession. I never finished the book.
i'm so curious if people from my former hall are on this board.

LOL @ CyberJ!
