  a request for some advice pls.. firstly, a bit of background.. my mother raised my younger brother and i in the truth.

  she did so alone until she remarried in the early 80s.

  my stepfather was a dyed in the wool dub who never varied from the party line.

  Many of us here can certainly sympathesize most sincerely with your feelings and frustration. You might find a good example of the WT religion's position on this kind of thing revealed in a post on SilentLamb's website. http://www.silentlambs.org

  On that site you will find the confession of a former JW elder who tells about one man in his former congregation who confessed to have committed murders prior to becoming a Witness. The elder inquired from others and the Society whether he should report this knowledge to the authorities. They said no.

  In all likelihood, the elders in your stepfather's congregation would regard anything you tell them as "gossip" and would do nothing whatsoever about it.

  What drives exJWs to atheism?

  a significant number of former jehovah's witnesses come out of the watchtower still believing the bible and considering themselves christians.

  most coming out are in a serious state of bewilderment, and they look intently and sincerely for something to fill the huge void of lost religion, lost family and friends, and lost fellowship.

  they seek some viable spiritual association with others of like mind while at the same time having become very wary of any organized religion.. what is it that eventually draws so many of us (not me) to agnosticism or atheism?

  It might prove it to you and not prove it to someone else. The Watchtower would probably claim that Satan did it posing as "an angel of light". Fundamentalists have all kinds of testimonies they swear by that have befuddled doctors.

  But in the terms you have defined "logic", the absense of "proof" of a thing does not prove the opposite of the thing to be true, nor even necessarily imply it. Regardless of whether its about proving God or anything else.
  proplog2, I'm not trying to convince you (or anyone else) of God. That's a personal decision. At this point, I'm just discussinig the implications "logic" versus "proof", regardless of whether it is about a supreme power or anything else. I hope you understand that.

  yes, millions of persons have been shocked to learn that things they were taught as being vital for salvation are now considered by their church to be wrong.

  have you, too, felt discouragement, or even despair, because of what is happening in your church?

  I agree with you. I would be perfectly satisfied with Watchtower reform that would stop the shunning, and reform their teachings on blood, and reporting crime to the civil authorities. Aside from that, let the blind follow the blind if that is their choice -- as long as they are not harming anyone else.

  disfellowshipped elders reinstated

  would appreciate any info or experiences on this subject.... a brother is disfellowshipped, 2 years later reinstated, five years later disfellowshipped again, immorality, 4 years later reinstated, becomes elder, 8 years later runs off with pioneer 16 yr old , divorces wife , dumps girl, remarrys 5 years later, appointed elder again, i believe due to the buddy system, how many times do'es a person have to be disfellowshipped before they say no to any priveledges let alone being an elder again ?

  I've thought of an example that will hopefully demonstrate to you that you do not understand reductio ad absurdum, even for what it can prove. You problem is that you are trying to say that if two of the premises conflict then the initial assertion cannot be true. Wrong. One or more of the premises have to conflict with the initial assertion. Example:

  1. Dogs exist.
  2. All dogs are brown.
  3. Fido is a dog.
  4. Fido is black.
  ======================
  Conclusion: Either All dogs are not brown or Fido is not a dog. The a conflict between 2 and 4 do not conclude 1 is false.
  Now if a known premise is stated that all dogs have died of rabis, THEN you have a premise that conflicts with the initial assertion and disproves it. There was no such premise in your example of "God exists."

  If you can't see that, I give up and let the readers judge for themselves.

  most who write here, don't belive in the jw teachings.. most are complainers and apostate.. does any one know were i can find a genuine jw site?
