Hey, congrats, Lilacs.
I can relate. I won an office baseball pool last year. $50 for $1.
And I'm the one who always says: "I never win anything."
'Twas fun.

i've tried to get on kent's site with no luck.. do you have to face mecca and wave a dead chicken or what?.
i really hate it that he felt compelled to make a new site.
knowing kent, i'm sure he said why he did it.
But some of them are still obviously addicted to your site, Simon. Even when they say they will quit, they can't. ;-)
Maybe that's why they have to demand their account be disabled (and then claim they were "DF'd").

so often that question is asked.
"why does god allow sickness?
why does god allow hurricanes?
Hello, IW:
I have some thoughts (faith opinions/speculations) along this line. To some extent I agree with your line of thinking, possibly expanding on it a little from rhw faith perspective. I don't have time to expand right now, and generally prefer to discuss my personal views in private e-mail rather than on public boards. If you would be interested in some thoughts, e-mail me at:

got a call late this afternoon: "your daughter was in a car accident along with four other girls.
you need to come to the emergency room.".
daughter not there yet.
Alan and Julie (Jukie):
So sorry to hear about this! I know and sympathize with what a close call this was. I have a nephew who is quadraplegic from a similar accident and being thrown from a car. (You met his mother.)
As bad as this situation is, and what you and she will have to bear in the months ahead, thank goodness it wasn't worse.
Alan, you sound pretty shook. Hang in there.
Julie (Jukie), you're a gem.
Blessings,
Ros

i just read the story about the family in oregon, gone forever, because of the pressure of shunning.. in my opinion, shunning is the big story about jehovah's witnesses.
shunning and the fear of shunning is what enables the control of victims of child abuse.
shunning is what destroys families.
I agree with your point, JoelBear. The SHUNNING has always been my biggest issue with the Watchtower religion. It was probably the biggest thing that made me see through "the Lie". I tend to believe that refusal of blood transfusion would be far more a matter of choice if not for the shunning sanction. SHUNNING has been the main point presented in the blood articles published by Dr. Muramoto and Lee Elder as the weapon of cohersion for obedience to this and other abominable prohibitions, even to death, of Jehovah's Witnesses. If not for the SHUNNING, I think many faced with these issues would do the old sin-now-repent-later thing.
However, although I freely admit I have no insight to all the facts in the slaughter of this family, it seems very suspicious to me as a former JW. There is no indication presented that I can see which suggests the family were still believers of the JW doctrine, and the fact that they moved away from their family secretly and without revealing their whereabouts suggests that the shunning was not their greatest worry. Family members were evidently planning to gain custody of the children. This extremism on the part of relatives suggests that their was great concern for the children's salvation in these "last days" before Armageddon. Some radical JWs firmly believe it is better to die before Armageddon so as to get resurrection for a second chance in the "new Earth" after Armageddon. It's a point to consider that I don't think investigators would think of who are not cognizant of JW beliefs, but one I think is well worth investigating considering the JW mindset.
The husband of the family may well have gone off his rocker and done this terrible thing. It just seems strange there didn't seem to be any warning symptoms that anyone could recall. There usually are in these cases. Indications seemed to be the opposite.
If the husband believed salvation was through the Watchtower--which indications are that he did not--but if he did, why not go for reinstatement? Why move far away, secretly, no one knowing where you are? How could they not be "shunned" in that case? No motive; no depression; seemingly happy family, doing well in business, children doing well in school. I'm just more suspicious about this, that's all.

i was working on my car in the factory {bld.
1} on friday oct. 31 1973, when all hell broke loose, the fire alarm in bld.
4 went off at about 9:30. the night watchman could find nothing.
I am so sorry for this terrible memory that haunts you. Yes, it was tragic. It is unconscienable for a religious dogma to become so obsessive that it blinds to the lives of people it is supposed to serve.

dont overstate matters.
the situation in oregon is a terrible tragedy.
the watchtowers policy on shunning likely contributed to the tragedy, it may have even been a primary factor but there are any number of other factors that could have contributed as well - too many to even mention!.
QUESTION: How do we know this man killed his family? The authorities say it APPEARS to be a murder/suicide situation.
Consider some other questions:
Why did this man and his family feel compelled to move away in the middle of the night to an unknown place in another state where his family, relations, and friends would not know where he is?
Why were there no signs, as there usually are, to indicate this man was troubled, or that the family was troubled, or that the children were troubled? Just the opposite seems to be true.
Remember, the authorities investigating this heinous crime are not in tune with cultish mind-control. Things of suspicion do not occur to them that might occur to people with a little more insight into the JW mindset, particularly the more devout.
Remember, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that if people die before Armageddon, they have hope of a resurrection in the "New Earth" where they will be given a second chance for judgment. If they die--"real soon"--in Armageddon, they are lost forever.
From the evidence, there were relatives concerned enough to be trying to gain custody of the couple's children.
Again I ask: Why did this couple feel compelled to leave their community, family and friends secretly and without them knowing their whereabouts? This--in my mind--is something that the law enforcement investigators would not likely think to consider. Is it possible that this crime was committed by some radical JW relative trying to save the everlasting lives of the children, and even the parents, by killing them before Armageddon? That's likely something that would never occur to the authorities.
Just a thought.

i know the word, "organization" has a bad taste.
but it is a fact of life that to get anything done on a grand scale in this world, good leadership and organization are a must.. we lack organization, much of what is said and done is a hit and miss thing except for the u.n. problem.
thanks to those who took a lead and the others who followed their lead some damn good work got done!
BRCI is organized. :)

the book some of you have been waiting for, "three dissertations on jehovah's witnesses" by jw apologist greg stafford is published and will begin shipping in about a week.
if you're interested, it is available from elihu books at this url: http://www.elihubooks.com/.
stafford has done some additional study and research relative to watchtower chronology, and there has been some rumour that he may be advocating a softer organizational stance on it, although i have not read the book yet, so it will be interesting to see what he says.. here's the table of contents:.
To Little Toe:
Greg has been pretty candid about his views in private e-mail and posting on Channel C. I'm anxious to see if he will be as explicit in his presentations in the book (in the appendix).
To: Room 215:
Hi, guy. You posted me some time ago, and I have lost your e-mail address. Would like talk a bit in private if you will e-mail me again. [email protected]
