Suzi Mayhem Outdoes John Cleese
by AlanF ina critique of suzi mayhem's theory of god .
i thought, when suzi first posted this, that it was a joke something like john cleese's classic "brontosaurus theory" skit in a monty python episode.
but mr. "dark clouds" has sort of asked me to critique it as if it were a serious theory, so here goes.. i'll address this to suzi, but suzi dear, don't take this too seriously.

What drives exJWs to atheism?
by ros ina significant number of former jehovah's witnesses come out of the watchtower still believing the bible and considering themselves christians.
most coming out are in a serious state of bewilderment, and they look intently and sincerely for something to fill the huge void of lost religion, lost family and friends, and lost fellowship.
they seek some viable spiritual association with others of like mind while at the same time having become very wary of any organized religion.. what is it that eventually draws so many of us (not me) to agnosticism or atheism?

And I notice you have chosen not to further discuss your views with me.
Right. That should tell you I don't give a 'love' (a 4-letter word) what you believe. Responding to someone asking about my beliefs does not equate preaching to trying to convert.
I've been criticized for not expressing my views on these boards. Thank you for expressing so beautifully why it is not wise.
If my posts spike a nerve, why not skip them. (I don't read yours.) -

I can always tell when I hit a nerve.
It is rare I discuss my views, but I disagree that I have no right to express them here. Isn't that what this board is supposed to be all about?
Hey, where are all the defenders of "free speech" and "free expression"?proplog2:
The owner has the right to make the rules. We may not like them, so we can just choose to not believe in the owner. Right? Your choice.
I still say that the fact that evil exists does is not evidence there is no creator. You may disagree with it, you may hate it, but its the boss, whether it is auto-evolution or intelligent design. -

Hi, larc:
I was raised in the town where the fuel for the atomic bomb was developed (plutonium). I remember the secrecy. :)But when discussing E=Mc^2, my question is about why people forget that the 'c' is not just the speed of light, but the speed of light squared
Why do you say nothing can travel faster than the speed of light?
Atomic energy is not the result of E=Mc^2, but of a neutron breaking away from the nucleus of a helium atom and bombarding another atom, thus splitting it. This causes a chain reaction of other neutrons flying away and bombarding other atoms, and ultimately an enormous explosion occurs in the release of energy. All at very high speed. (Very simplistic statement of a very complex phenomenon.) -

Got a dumb? question:
Considering Einstein's equation E=Mc^2, why is it so often that people refer to the mass as approaching, equalling, or merely surpassing the speed of light?
Mass traveling at the speed of light squared would be travelling IMMENSELY faster than light. What am I missing?
What I have always simplistically thought it meant is that mass cannot travel at that speed and remain mass. I realize a scientific discussion of it would go far beyond that simple premise, but then E=Mc^2 is the simple version, too. :) -

Hi, outnfree:
First, I do not take the book of Genesis literally. It was not intended to be. So when I refer to a scripture there, it is for the underlying analogical value. That is why I say Gen.3:22 is a "clue".
In the creation story, it says that man was made in God's image. Yet, evidently we cannot be in God's image without understanding good and evil. That is why God--in the story--would say: "Man has become like us, knowing good and evil."
I don't know your religious leanings, but if you are Christian, think about this: IN THE STORY AS IT GOES (pause for this to register). . . If Adam and Eve had never sinned, and had eaten of the tree of Life, the implication is that we would all be here forever, overpopulating the earth, never dying, never going to heaven or anywhere else, but running around blithfully naked in a lush expanding garden. To carry the scenario further, once the earth would reach a full population, would sex and marriage would no doubt desist? And people might eventually wonder what those annoying physical differences were all about, etc., etc., etc.
My belief until something better comes along is that this is the life of the knowledge of good and evil. It was designed to be. This earth is essentially away from God's presence, and it is through death that we will be born again into a spiritual life. That is what Christ was trying to explain to Nicodemus imo. In the edenic story, the only way to die was to sin. The only way to get born into spirit is to die.
Opinion: In order to experience good, to understand it, to have joy, we have to have experienced the opposite.
This is my philosophical viewpoint, not carved in stone, and I'm sure others here on both sides of the skeptic/believer debates will consider my viewpoint to be folly. Fwiw.

Propolog2:
Ros: You seem to like this theme. I think you are a border line atheist/agnostic/skeptic
No, I'm just not a fundamentalist. ;)
Obviously, the Creator permits evil. The question is why?
The analogy clue is at Gen.3:22 imo.Consider this analogy:
IMO, the Government not only tolerates, but in some instances promulgates bad things. Look at some of the atrocities in war! Criminals of heinous crimes not prosecuted on irrelevant technicalities, etc. I don't understand why the Government does it or allows it, but its the boss, so I have to follow the rules, whether I understand or like them or not. Most people think that basically, the Government has our best interests at heart, even though they don't always understand or agree with the process.I fully realize it is a shoddy comparison if you entertain a particular idealism about God that He must comply with for you to believe in Him. But He ain't gonna come down and put dew on that lambs wool to prove His existence, so that's where its at. :)

A bible study? Me? Well... okay!
by COMF ini'm gearing up to get out of this protected, "inaccessible" apartment complex with its remote-cammed, sensor-driven gate and security patrol.
i'm moving to a house.
one in a residential neighborhood, with other houses around and a 7-11 on the corner and a mall a few blocks away and couples on saturday walking very slowly carrying bookbags.. i was reading roamingfeline's post, "do you know how to wait," in which she described an encounter with a new, nervous witness.

I have had the same idea of letting JWs start a study with me for years, seriously! Trouble is I'm seldom home when they come around.
