My only regret is that it seems to always take a disaster like this for all of us to remember that people around the globe just want to live in peace and see the same for their fellow man.

Why do people hate Americans?
by dorayakii inmaybe the correct word is not "hate", but "distain" or "dislike"... .
many people were against the war in iraq and dilike president bush, has this had a baring on how people view americans?
when america flexes its military muscles how do you feel?

I am a student in history.
You need to read up on the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Britian. I'm all for tooting our own horn, but these two battles were crushing blows to Germany (and we weren't part of either one).
Now, if you want to "brag" about we did at D-Day or opening up a third front through the south of europe or how the Marines kicked ass in the Pacific, hand me the red white and blue and I'll wave along with you. Having two grandfather's who faught in the war (one didn't make it back) I'm all for remembering what they did. But we also have to recognize the bravery of our allies. To say that we single-handedly saved Europe from Hitler's grasp is just plain stupid.

. But if it was not for us here in the USA you would be kissing Hitlers statue right now.
yawn...also total BS as is regularly proven on this forum.
Not Hitler's but maybe Stalin's. I have to admit, if I were a Brit., statements like this would piss me off. It would have taken longer and cost a lot more lives but in the end Germany would have lost to Britian and the Soviets even if the U.S. hadn't entered the war. However, the Brits could not have stopped the Soviets from taking control over more of Europe. France, Holland, Belgium, West Germany, etc. would have been under Soviet control and been more like Poland for some 50 years. Also, I don't believe they would have had the resources to free Asia from Japan. IMO the British would have made some type of deal to allow Japan to keep what they had taken in order to prevent Australia from being taken.

kind of interesting interview I heard this morning on the radio. it was talking about the local politicians down in New Orleans for years were given money to use on updating the leavees, instead, they used it to build casinos, thinking it would be a revenue generator. It was... problem was, like any politician ANYWHERE (demo or repub) once they get money, they forget about yesterday's promises and think about how the new money's going to be spent to further getting them re-elected. when this is over, recriminations are going to go everywhere. ALL, with a few exceptions, politicans STINK , doesn't matter which party..... PERIOD..
Yup, all of them were rolling the dice (no pun intended). It's instant votes when you can divert the hundreds of millions from the levees progect and instead build casinos and employ people. And since most politicians are in office for only a relatively short period of time, they tend to be short-sighted. They'll grease the wheels of big business, expecting payback once they leave office. Sadly, many too many people paid with their lives for this stupid decision.

I have a feeling that even if Bush would have lost the 04 elections and Kerry were in offce, GW would still get blamed.

It seems like it's a technical difference (judge's decision vs. being charged)
Joran can be held without being charged up to 116 days if a Dutch judge determines police authorities have reasonable cause, according to Dutch law.
Either way an individual can be jailed for up to 4 months without having a trial. IMO the right to a fair and speedy trial is a basic freedom.
Also, the Netherlands are a very small part of Europe. Like one state in the US. In most countries you have to be charged within a few days of being arrested.
Pole, I'm not a lawyer and I don't know what rights are covered by the EU and which ones are covered by national law. The "116 day under Dutch law" was something I saw while watching CNN. I was always under the impression that the Dutch were the more "liberal" minded people, so I was a bit shocked when I heard about this.
Regarding state to state laws, yes, thats sort of true. However, the basic rights of a U.S. citizen (trial by jury, right to speak to an attorney, etc.) are guaranteed by Federal law, not state laws.

Do they really have a better way of life than you Canadians? Do they have more freedom than us UK or EU citizens?
I prefer the Canadian lifestyle and society and I think we have many more freedoms in the EU. We do things over here that would probably get people shot or locked up in America.I TOTALLY disagree with this. I'm not going to get into another "defend America" thread but I do have to comment. While watching the Nata Holloway missing person / murder case in Aruba I was shocked to learn that, based upon Dutch law, a person can be incarcerated for 116 days even without any charges being brought against them. WOW! I don't know how differnt it is from country to country in the EU but it's my understanding that in Holland they can arrest you, throw you in jail and let you sit there for months on end without any charges being brought against you. So this Joran van der Sloot sat in jail for months and months and was never charged with a crime. Talk about a lack of basic freedom.

The race card has officially been played in New Orleans

it's not his fault.

As much as I think politicians are corrupt, I honestly do not think ANYONE thought
"shall we get a relief operation going then?"
"why? its only blacks that live down there?"
SERIOUSLY do you HONESTLY believe anyone would think that?
Finally, a voice of reason, thanks Katie.
What I find ironic is that Jesse Jackson and the Jackson family are probably one of the richest / most powerful families here in Chicago. All of which was gained by exploiting the black community. Hmmm...I wonder if a natural disaster hit Chicago who would get out first, my kids or Jesse? BTW - I'll bet anyone a dollar that Jesse is able to use his "power" to get his hands on some type of lucrative contract in the re-building of New Orleans.
