In the old, old days, probably before any of us were alive. The Sunday meetings were ALL in the afternoons, in the morning you would go out in service, stand in front of a church and pass out leaflets regarding a public talk that afternoon. The meetings were considered public meetings, with a talk and then a Q & A session.

Public Talks - or not???
by IMHO inwhy are so many public talks these days aimed at the congregation rather than the public?.
is this by design, or is it elders slipping up?.
references to "brothers and sisters" etc.

Has/did TBTS abandoned Russell AND Rutherford?
by Aussie Oz inplaying with myspace today and came across this, saying that the wt has abandoned both of them.
is it not more a case of they pick and choose the bits of their now archaic writings that support current thinking?
i dont know that one could say they have been rejected though.... what thinks you?.

RR
They have rejected most of what Russell taught and quote him out of convenience, I have found that they often quote him out of context and the other times they quote or mention him as to do with witnessing efforts, as if his witness efforts were similiar to that of the Witnesses today.
I would say that the Witnesses are the children of Rutherford, while they have rejected some of his ideas, mushc of what he taught and believed are still taught.

1975 For Deniers
by Farkel in1975 for deniers.
most of today's jws were not members in 1975 or in the 9 years prior to 1975, so they were not eyewitnesses to what really went on during that period.
i was a pioneer in that period, and i was an eyewitness to what went on.. those jws who are still active today and who were around in that period will typically say it was the "brothers" who "ran ahead of jehovah" and "read more into" the 1975 prediction than what was actually stated.

I understand Moshe, but tell that to the die hard JW's I've witnessed too, no matter what I show them, they reject it because it doesn't specifically say "armageddon will come in 1975"

Russell re Millerite founder -- "Father Miller" no less than 4 times
by Fatfreek inmost of us know about the millerites and their founder and how some 50,000 folks during the 19th century looked for the end.
question: was there any link between them and the founder of the watchtower society?.
i will quote below the first reference of miller to illustrate that russell's feelings for miller were by no means antagonistic but were fond and loving.

The term "Father Miller" was not coined by Russell. It is also used by various Adventist groups.
In the book "Footprints" by Adventist A.W. Spalding, he wrote:
In December, 1839, he was invited by Joshua V. Himes, of the Christian Connection, to speak at the Chardon Street Chapel in Boston. Himes assured "Father Miller" that "doors should be opened in every city in the Union, and the warning should go to the ends of the earth." Himes, an abolitionist and a born promoter, immediately began publication of the Signs of the Times. Thus was launched the extensive publication activities of the Millerites.
Sylvester Bliss' Memoirs of William Miller published during Miller's lifetime also refer to Miller as "Father Miller" in several places
Also the website "Famous Americans, says this of Miller:
Father Miller's lectures were illustrated by great charts, upon which were depicted the apocalyptic beasts, Nebuchadnezzar's image, etc. These charts presented a mathematical demonstration of the mystical problem of the 2,300 days of Daniel's vision, showing just when "the third woe" must be sounded, and the seventh trumpet, and just when the stone must smite the image, etc. - http://www.famousamericans.net/williammiller/
One just needs to google "Father William Miller" to see all the references.

Sent anonymous letters to the society?
by Truthexplorer injust wondered if many of you have sent any anonymous letter to the society expressing your view points and unhappiness with the way things are.. i am in the process of doing this, but wish to keep it personal and not show it on this forum as there is too much in the letter that might give me away.
the letter will be very sincere and honest.
it will be about 10 pages long and i will be sending copies to the governing body and to the writing department at brooklyn.

The problem farkel is that the Society has ways of spinning things and any brain dead JW will not see or accept what you say or show them, unless it says "1975 Armageddon"

I did, complaining about the congregation and my fellows elders. I first wrote to the body, but they didn't listen, then it was sent to certain members in the congregation, when that didn't work, I sent it outside the congregation, then it went to the Society, and all hell broke loose. The Society sent someone to investigate, the elders suspected it was me but had no proof. At the same time someone else was mailing out apostate literature and I was getting blamed for it. In the end, I stepped down and walked out!

The problem is, you'll NEVER find the Society's publicationd where they states, 1975 was the end of this system of things. There are inferences, but nothing solid
