Bible Students
by Justin inas is well known, not all bible students remained with the wt in the years following pastor russell's death, and so today there are a number of groups that still identify themselves as bible students and have more or less retained russell's original teachings.. my question, for anyone who may have knowledge of this matter, is: what do the present day bible students believe about the availability of the high calling (heavenly calling) for people who newly associate with them and who make a consecration/dedication to do god's will?
in view of the supposed lateness of the hour, do they have anything similar to the "other sheep" class in the jws?.
please don't respond by telling me what the orthodox view is (that there aren't two classes to begin with) - we all know that.

JW's blood as to Mormon's polygamy
by Moxy ini think in time, the blood transfusion doctrine will fade away very similarly to mormon's polygamy doctrine.
the doctrine met with increasing legal pressure from the state and internal dissent from more liberal members.
the tide seems to have turned after the doctrine was about 50 or 60 years old (i am using 1830s as origin date) and from about 1900 on, the lds church no longer offically sanctioned the belief.

I think you are completely correct. The blood doctrine will be abandoned eventually, but individual Witnesses will continue to practice it for many years.
I know several old JW's who are still anti-vaccination, even though that one was abandoned in 1952.

There are still some groups out there that study the writings of C T Russell, and consider him to be the faithful and wise servant. I saw one of the programs for their meeting, and it discussed various themes from Russell's writing. It's like they're caught in a time warp.
A few years ago, I ordered a copy of their "Harvest Truth Database". It contains all of the original writings of C T Russell. So, they are at least good for something.
It's hard to believe that there are people like this out there.

It's nice to know that we are considered to be of similar stature to Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Charles Manson.

What's Your Definition of "Spiritual Need?...
by expatbrit in"spiritual need.
" one of the jw's favourite catchphrases.
"we are conscious of our spiritual need" they say in a self-congratulatory way.. "the vast majority are not conscious of their spiritual need" they say in a condemnatory way, to provide some reason why no one listens to them any more.. so what is it?.

I've always thought that this was a rather profound scripture, and that "spiritual need" refers to the deep yearning of the soul. So, you can never really be happy unless you come to grips with your basic needs.
Jw's, of course, equate all spirituality with the organization, so "spiritual need" becomes the need for the borg.
But, I found something very interesting about this scripture. In most translations, the Bible doesn't say this at all. It says "Blessed are the poor in spirit". This is a completely different thought.

Victory...the reward for patience!
by dmouse inmany years ago when i first came upon boards like this i wanted to know how to cope with my new status as an exjw.. in particular i was concerned with how to handle my still devout jw wife and three children.. i was given a lot of advice some potentially harmful, like leave your wife but many recommended patience.. that was ten years ago.
over the next decade i allowed my wife to take our children to all the meetings and inculcate them however she wished.
i knew it was a risk but i did not want to appear to be the stereotypical opposing mate and reinforce jw propaganda.. my plan was this:.

You're right. They are bleeding heavily. If it wasn't for Africa and Eastern Europe, the numbers would already be negative.
I looked in some old yearbooks yesterday, and found that Canada had fewer baptisms in 2001 than they did in 1970. Prior to 1970, the yearbooks don't show baptisms.
By the way, congrats on your son's attitude. It has always been my observation that, given a little information and a choice, kids will not stay in the organization. To keep them in, you have to invest huge amounts into indoctrination, but to get them out, you just need to open the door a crack.

Me and my brother.
by nicolaou inan earlier discussion has been highlighting the differences between da'ing and df'ing.
xena said:i am sorry qadreena but i have never in the 20 some odd years i have been a jw ever heard of an unbaptised publisher being d/aed...marked as bad association yes..but d/a...no...but i guess stranger things can happen.... well that brought it all back.. actually xena the exact same thing happened to my brother in the early 80's.
he was only 14. he'd carried on associating with a friend of his who'd been disfellowshipped.

I can personally vouch for the accuracy of the report on this policy. During the early 80's, several of the kids that I grew up with were disassociated. The effect was identical to disfellowshipping. In fact, one man who studied and began service but never got baptized, was publicly labeled as being no longer an approved associate.
Years later, in the late 80's, the policy was changed and these people were contacted and informed that they had been "undisfellowshipped". As far as I know, every one of them laughed in the face of the elders and said "good riddance".

It sounds like the Society managed to get a discount by booking the venue at a low-demand time.
I'll bet they saved hundreds of dollars. So what if thousand of individual JW's have to reschedule their life?

BM:
I'm just fine, thank you.
Although I seem to have developed a bit of a JW death wish, lately - growing a beard, publishing anti-bible articles under my real name, etc.
And yes, Toronto airport hotels in mid February are lovely vacation spots.

Part 12: October Surprise II - The Sequel!
by Amazing inpart 12: october surprise ii the sequel!
october 1 a new day: looking back on the first parts to this series, one who is an ex-jw can perhaps appreciate these events as no other person.
what may be a little different is how an exit can, for some, such as in my own situation, drag on and on with new difficulties, bizarre twists, and unexpected players on the field.

I can't quite seem to get past this beard thing.
"I cited how "Professional" men in San Francisco were sporting neatly trimmed beards"
One of the common arguments against beards is that it they are not accepted in the community and brand one as a rebel.
Well, I sit on a provincial chamber of commerce committee (investment and growth). A few weeks ago, we had a meeting, followed by a meeting with the Provincial Minister of Finance. This committee consists of company Presidents, senior managers, etc. By coincidence, of the seven who attended the meeting, four of us had beards.
So, I can conclude that JW's are not only out of touch on this issue, they are actually moving backwards.
