OK, so let's take a quick poll here.
Who thinks that 'spirit' is some kind of power, albeit one that we do not at present have instruments that can measure it?

i've always wondered that.
recently i asked that question on another thread and didn't really get ananswer.
cofty made an excellent point that we often hear what it isn't, but that really isn't useful.. so, what is it?

By saying my comments are off topic, you indicate I have failed in my explanation.
To assist, please read the entire post, since it is easy to extract individual sentences and project them as being off topic when in actuality they are merely smaller parts of a larger whole.
Let me try to do better, with the analogy of a memory.
Where does it reside? What does it look like? How can the memory be harvested or examined?
When the body dies, where do the memories go?
How is it that all memories, despite them being so different and including things such as sound, vision, smell etc, all look the same at the physical level?
Here's where it links to the current topic.
'Spirit' is not alone in being difficult to define.
Some (and I'm not saying anyone here) may use this difficulty to refute that spirit exists, simply because it is difficult to define.
However we have personal experience of other things which are difficult to define (memories - not the causes or effects or even holding places of memories, but memories themselves) yet accept these exist.
The manifestion of spirit at pentecost 33CE was the image of tongues of fire, and the ability to speak in tongues.
This indicates that this type of spirit is a power of some sort. Maybe it is a form of power that we have not yet encountered anywhere else, and therefore struggle to describe it using the limited understanding available to us today.

cofty Actually it is. It is a set of connections between neurons. It was announced yesterday that it may be possible to use lasers to delete specific memories.
I have to say that I'm constantly amazed by medical progress.
But if a memory is a physical thing, why can it not be observed? Only the memory 'holders' can be observed.
By destroying certain neurons with a laser, we are only destroying the memory holder, thus losing the memory.

"A new view of truth can never contradict a former truth. 'New Light' never extinguishes old light, but simply adds to it" .

Thanks snare,
So we can identify the chemical cause of an emotion and observe the physical consequence of an emotion, but the emotion itself, what is that comprised of?
I only added this question since it seems to be of a similar composition to spirit.
We know it's there because we can observe the effect of an emotion, much like the spirit manifest itself at pentecost.
Maybe a memory is a better comparison.
We know that memories are stored in the brain, but when we dissect a brain all we see are physical things, yet a memory itself is not a physical thing, although it is stored in a physical thing.
I think there is more than one type of spirit as well.
Angels are said to be spirits, Gods power is described as a spirit, Man is said to have a spirit.
I don't think any of these are the same thing, so the word 'spirit' seems to be a generic term for various forms of dynamism.

goingthruthemotions it clearly states new information with be revealed after the 1000 years.
Really?
To me it clearly talks about scrolls of judgement being opened in the context of a court.
Which part talks about new information?

i hear that a recent talk was about taking care of one's aging parents.
i agree.
generally, kids should take care of aging parents.
This was one WT the society never thought they'd end up writing.
However, now there are so many old ones being discarded by the society (closing branches, no more DO's), they need to suggest something so that these ones get cared for after spending their whole lives in service to the GB.

ok in the effort of full disclosure, i have had a couple of drinks and recently experienced a circuit assembly and a bad experience with a co.. i don't know where to effing begin.
first of all the circuit assembly was a joke.
half the assembly was about pioneering and selling your soul to be a no-pay salesman for the borg.
TTATTelder Will they start saying we are 100 years into the thousand-year-reign?
They're saying the opposite, that however long Jesus reigns since 1914, this is in addition to the 1,000 year reign, when that begins.

What is an emotion? What is it comprised of?
I'm not referring to the cause or the consequence of an emotion, but the emotion itself.
What about a thought, a memory. What is a memory comprised of?

if so, what would be some examples?.
.
only questions that show a higher degree of thought and intelligence please..
Back on topic, you can get disfellowshipped for anything at all if the elders determine that you are either brazen or a corrupting influence (read 'divisive').
These terms give enough latitude for the BoE to settle any grievances or punish you for hurting their feelings, eg by being unreasonable and asking for scriptural backing for what they are telling you.
