Sammie, You have said some very kind things about Jesus and that you believe he existed. However, the best proof we have of Jesus and what he said and did is in the Bible. As recorded in the Bible he said he was God. If we don't take him at His word as recorded then we discount everything about him. If he wasn't God and said he was then he was crazy or a liar and not the moral guide he professed to be. If we ignore the virgin birth as recorded in the bible then we discount the miracle of his birth and the fulfillment of the prophecies. We are saying that the bible is wrong. For me, if he said he was God than I take him at his word and those who recorded what he said and did. If the Bible says he was born of a virgin died, and ascended to heaven thtn I will accept as true. I have a difficult time acepting some of the things said about Him and discounting the others.

Revelling in not believing

i'd really love to see what people think, there might even be people who think the same thing.. as jw's we got every single little thing rammed down our throats right?
so, we had set beliefs or answers for everything- does god exist?, are there aliens?

This is an interesting topic. I was not raised JW and actually agree that they are a cult. It is sad that so many here went through terrible experiences through their youth in a religion that preaches nothing but fire and brimstone and eternal damnation. That is so little of the true Christian religion and you have missed out on alot of the joy that can come from a belief in Christ. I have often wondered if that very negative experience led some to become atheists or non believers and that if your experience had been different you would have reached a different conclusion. Like a natural reaction so far from what you were running from that it led you to disbelieve everything and if over time that reaction mellows and you could examine the faith again in a new light. Not unlike a battered woman who hates all men after she leaves the relationship but later finds that some are okay.
My religious experience was very joyful growing up and it has brought me great comfort. It saddens me that so many of you experienced such heartache.

That is an arrogant statement and an illogical conclusion. There have been brilliant people throughout history who have had faith in God. There are brilliant people today who are believers. Belief in God is not a correlation of a person's intelligence.

To my knowledge Albert Einstein was Jewish and Thomas Jefferson was a Diest.
As far as the "top thinkers" are atheists I would assume that that would depend upon your definition of "top" thinker. I do not think that you can exclude believers in God from being major contributors to science or world peace in the next hundred years. There are still billions of people on the planet that profess a belief in God and at least in this country that number is still very significant.
A few prominent or famous athiests who are wealthy or entertainers have done great things for society, no doubt about it. But I don't think you can discount the actions of religious people who have also done great things towards world peace or science. Nor do I think you can discount the religious nature of those on my list by saying that if they were alive today they would be athiests. That is pure speculation and unwarranted. -

As for "supposedly", a benefit to society is a relative term in some instances and what one person views as a benefit others would not, thus the ambiquity. -

I am not proposing that only religious persons can do good deeds for society. I am only asking for professed atheists who have supposedly done good deeds to be identifed.
As for Christopher Hitchens, I believe that his take on Mother Teresa should be taken with a large grain of salt. He is an admitted anti Cahtloic, alcoholic Marxists. Hardly the type of person who would admire her work. -
