  Psychological Impact

  it is said by jws that 'the truth' never leaves you.

  even when you have broken free, you will still be haunted by it, watching the news just in case they were right.

  Hi Individual and welcome to the board.

  I am glad that you shared your feelings with us as I think this is something many of us experience after leaving the borg. Those feelings of fear were, for me, very intense. I used to avoid the news and newspapers as I couldn't stand the terror that arose in me whenever something even remotely approaching a WTS 'prophecy' was mentioned. And within me there grew an anger at the years of life and peace of mind that had been stolen from me. The horrible nightmares I had that my children would be murdered by Jehovah at Armageddon and that it would all be my fault...what an awful, awful thing to do to someone in order to control them. But I'm glad to hear that you've broken free of that mindset, as have I and life is good now.
  If you haven't already, you might want to pop over to the Personal Experiences section and read some of the stories there...its a great way to get to know some of the folks who post here and also to see that you are not alone in your feelings.

  I would love to join in the fun, as well, and as I've never been to Australia, I don't think I would be recognized .

  I thought I would never go to another convention; I thought that never again would I want to...but do you know, reading this thread, I suddenly have this great urge to sneak into one with my fellow apostate compatriots. I'm sure I could camouflage myself well enough not to be detected-I think I may still have some old service shoes with scuffed heels (proof of one's long hours in field service, yaknow) but the dress may be a problem...don't have any that reach below the knees. Come to think of it, don't have any that even touch the knees!! BUT! I do know how to submissively listen, clap when expected, and sing off key. I also am quite good at packing a picnic lunch that is unappetizing and generally soggy by intermission...are these qualifications enough to allow me to join you both or is more required?? Please let me know soon as I am trying to arrange my airfare to Oz...

  I just wanted you to know that your story of Will touched me deeply and I am glad that you shared it with us. I have never lost someone I knew very well through suicide but I came quite close to doing it to myself at one point. And yes, while I accept responsibility for having even considered that as an option, there were other factors that I had no control over that influenced my feelings and thoughts and caused me a great deal of pain. ONE of those factors was the 'Christian love' (the lack thereof) I received from my 'brothers'...most of you know what I am referring to as it has been demonstrated in this very thread. Some words that come to mind...heartless, judgemental, arrogant, well..I'm sure you all know what I mean.

  Slayer, I always enjoy your posts and hope that you can ignore the negative responses you've received here and feel the warmth, compassion, and understanding from those who care.

  Thanks so much for the welcome back!! I missed all of my friends from the board...funny that, eh? And do you know...I thought of you all while I was gone; I feel like I have real true friends here.
  As for the mini vacation, it was WONDERFUL!! One thing that stands out: my 8 year old daughter had never been snorkeling before and so we were out in the river above a spring...I taught her how to do it and then swam hand in hand through clear, cold, sun dappled water with one of my favorite people in the world!! Every so often, I would look over at her, she was so absorbed in this new world that had magically opened up for her...she would exclaim (yes, I am proficient at understanding snorkel-speak!) when she saw a school of fish or water bubbling up from the rocks...and my heart would swell with love and appreciation for life. No matter, NO MATTER what pain we may experience in this world, no matter how many times our hearts may be broken...there is still so much joy, so much wonder to experience if we only allow ourselves to.

  I want you to know that I am on vacation and I stopped having loads of fun just so that I could say goodbye to you. I am so happy to hear that you are getting to spend some time with your new daughter and hope that we will get to see some pictures; I am sure she is gorgeous.   How much do members of the governing body make?

  just a simple question although i would also like to know if they have any sort of salary, or if there truly is evidence that they do make personal use of the voluntary contributions from the flock.

  How Should I Do This?

  okay....in a few weeks we(wife & kids) are going to visit my parents.

  they have been jw's for a long time.... a little back-ground info...a couple of years ago i said the hell with being a jw..grew a goatee (wife said it made me look evil..:) and wanted nothing at all to do with being a jw..elders actually left me alone for the most part...talked to my parents...my mother kinda freaked but my dad said basically that he understood and that i gotta do what i gotta do ..said if he could help i could call...cool.

  i have changed alot in that couple of years on the inside..how i feel and think...i am re-examining everything related to jw's and have found many very disturbing facts..i want to talk to my parents about them but i am not sure how to go about it...my mother is the emotional type..doesn't get to deep if you understand my meaning...my dad on the other hand was an elder for many years and is an analitical type person...very down-to-earth.....anyways...does anyone have any suggestions how i can talk to them about what i have found out without them freaking out and calling me apostate?.

  Hey Wolfy,

  Thanks for sharing with us what's going on with you. I really don't have much to offer in the way of good advice...none of my JW family members will really speak to me, much less give me the opportunity to point out any WTS errors. And even if they allowed me to get that far, anything I said would fall on deaf ears. I do agree with the advice to approach your father; who knows, you may find out he is more sympathetic than you thought....
