the society tries very hard to present the idea that the door-to-door work was essentially the same in the 1st century as now.

I guess the thing that finally did me in was that aspect of what I call "true believerism". The idea that this group or that group is of the devil and all but us folks are going to hell. I mean we made decisions about peoples eternal destiny while having coffee. That is truly arrogant when one stops and things about it.
I agree with you and applaud your insight and thinking ability. And isn't it interesting that so many of us made these types of judgements about other people when the Bible clearly tells us that it's not for us to judge?? Hypocritical of us, eh?? But I am very glad to be out of that mindset and glad to welcome you here. Look forward to reading more of your posts!

my mother called tuesday night.
as many of you know, i have chosen to stop communication with my family as of the beginning of this year.. my mother has called 4 or 5 times to talk, but i have not called her, my father or my brother or anyone in his family.
all of them are witnesses of varying degrees.. i tend to go into a deep depression each time my mother calls.

Just wanted to pop back on and say that I believe the behaviour/thinking pattern that Flip is referring to is called codependence. There are some great websites that discuss it and there is an excellent book called "Codependent No More" which discusses in detail how we can identify codependent behaviours and how to counteract them. Anyway, hope that helps and I hope that you are able to recognize that the problem is with your mom and not you.
