Welcome Messhy. I enjoy Greek and Roman mythology. Homer is wonderful. I've also read some modern fantasy novels. There's nothing wrong with using your imagination and being creative. Good luck with your story. -

The Truth is not an ORG.....It's inside of you
by tor1500 inthe truth, the org is the truth...ummm...let's think about that...i was thinking that the bible is the truth & what it does is that it reveals the truth about you...the more you read the bible the more you may see yourself & your actions.
you may be a person who judges people, the bible will show you what's wrong with that...viola, another truth revealed about you.
you may be a prideful person, you read a story in the bible about that...again, it's another truth revealed about you.

Thanks for replying Tor. I'm not a debater either. I see you reaching out for reality and I want to help, that's all. I agree we are mainly on the same page. A year after I left the religion I did an IT course at a college and I remember the tutor listening to my story and she said she thought I needed more education. I was a little insulted. It's not an easy thing to hear is it? Now I think she saw that I was intelligent but because of that religion forbidding education she just thought I didn't know enough. She was right. I hope you get somewhere with your research. This link might help.

I get what everyone is saying, the bible could or could not be true, but it's man that messes up the message. Even it there isn't any God/Jesus, The Bible, wouldn't you like looking back on your life & you were a good person...
I get what you're saying too Tor, I really do. Living ethically and treating others well is very important to me. I just don't want to look back at my life and see I lived by someone else's rules. Whether dreamt up by a religion, or anyone else. It is possible to decide how to be a good person you know. You ignored my post that showed humans have been trying to work out how to be a good person since 500 BC. That's up to you. -

what about, do to others as you would have them do to you....meaning, BE NICE, because you'd want someone to be nice to you...That to me is the meat and potatoes of the bible...Don't do to others what you don't want done to you....Most of the bible are just stories...true or false, who knows & who cares...but it's how we treat one another that really counts.
Tor, please google the Golden Rule, which is what you're talking about above. Confucius, Plato, Buddha and others were talking about this principle five hundred years before Jesus. None of them claimed to be the son of God.
It was an amazing breakthrough for humanity, this cannot be denied. Tribalism meant that people looked after their own family and tribe, for the sake of survival. The idea of treating slaves, foreigners, enemy nations with justice was a ground breaking idea, no argument there. The point is Jesus did not say it first, he was 500 years late. Don't take my word for it, check it.

Hi tor1500 do you really think the Bible shows us how to cope with everyday life? People being killed for not being obedient, naughty children eaten by bears, people having sex with members of their own family, being killed for not giving the whole amount of a contribution to the congregation.
Where is the application to real life here? Only if you rewrite each story to make a modern day application like they do in the Watchtower can you make any sense of these ridiculous stories. If you're going to do that why bother, why not use your common sense to work out how best to live your life. If you're inexperienced about life and feel lost, read books, talk to other people, read biographies about other's lives, speak to a therapist.

Would you have married your spouse if you weren't both JWs?
by 3rdgen inok, i've had some wine, but i'm curious.
objectively speaking, but for the religion, did you have enough in common with your spouse to have met and married as non believers?

Yes we both liked walking in the countryside. We'd enjoyed similar books as children. We both preferred sci fi on TV to sport. We both gave 100% to whatever we believed in, which was our undoing. Leaving the religion, losing family, friends, our faith and life purpose nearly broke us.
We worked damn hard to make a life afterwards. There were lots of problems along the way, health, financial, but I suppose we leaned on and helped each other and it ended up being a good 27 year marriage. I'm glad I met him and I still miss him.
Here's a funny thing, we got talking when we first met about places we'd been to and it turned out we visited the same holiday village in Wales in the same year, in the same month, two weeks apart.

This song is nothing to do with religious faith but everything to do with self-belief, seizing opportunities and never ever giving up.

How was your day/ week thread?
by The Rebel inthis thread is for when you have to say something to get it out of the system, whether it is happy or sad.
my reason for stating the thread is that on occasion some threads do tend to get a little heated here, and maybe this thread will enable us to reflect on the important fact, we are real people and not just dots on a computer screen.. i would love to start the thread with a bang, but nothing of particular interest has happened, only i do hope the weather improves as the climate i live in has been sadly chilly for the time of year, (if you get the deeper meaning).

Well my house got flooded because of the water authority working in my street. I went to the post office to send off my passport for renewal and it was closed for two weeks for a refurb. Apart from that it was a great week. -

I normally ignore it when someone dislikes my post, they're entitled to their opinion. I'm just baffled when I put myself out and answered the question of the thread poster about how we got on as non-traditional adult learners because he said he wants to help other ex-JWs who come here. So I wonder, the person who objected to what I said, do you dislike adult learning, people with degrees, distance learning, the Open University or education in general?
