Happiness and Freedom On A Paradise Earth?
by Disassociated Lady 2 inat a recent meeting there was a watchtower article about life in paradise.
they were saying that even when witnesses finally get there they will still be under the strict instructions from the elders and gb.
they may be given jobs that they will find unpleasant, also the preaching work will be ongoing because of all the resurrected people who need to learn about why they are given another chance.

Oh I see, science fiction writer. Do you mean my avatar? Xanth? No Xanthippe, wife of Socrates. I have fond memories of reading Plato leading up to leaving the Borg.
I loved the Socratic Method and I realised for the first time that discussing what it means to be a good person, 'a just man', was going on in 400 BC and didn't start with Jesus or Paul. It was another nail in the JW coffin.
Actually Piers Anthony looks good, similar to Terry Pratchett but a bit naughtier..

Yes I agree doublethink is the likely answer. Politicians use it all the time. I don't know who Piers Anthony is I'm afraid.

This is just softening them up for when the elders say get to the KH on the weekend, clean it and paint it even if you don't feel like it. They may need to sell it soon and they want it in good shape. Does the GB even believe in paradise. Do they even believe in God? Or just dollars?

I went to hear it in Lichfield cathedral soon after leaving the Borg. The words meant a lot to me at the time. I do prefer to listen to classical music now when I'm at home or in the car, I got fed up with pop music.

"back in the day people didn't know not to abuse kids"- a jw explanation for their abuse scandal
by purrpurr ina few weeks back i showed the guardian article about the borg refusing to cooperate with the charity commission into child abuse to a fellow jw.
their response was quite amazing.
they told me that in the 50s-80s people didn't know about child abuse, didn't know it was wrong and no one really believed children when they claimed they had been abused - even worldly people.. they said that alot of the time children lie about being abused or therapists plant false memories in their heads and that apostates lie about being abused to undermine our faith.. about the borg not cooperating with the commission they said that it was probably because they wanted to protect the identities of jw's who had been abused.

They claimed that all that child abuse stuff happened in the past and doesn't happen now.
Yes a JW friend said the same to me. I wrote to her 'please tell me you know about the ARC into organisational child abuse including the JWs and the Charity Commission's enquiry here in the U.K.'. Her reply? She sent me a Return to Jehovah brochure.

How do we know JWs are wrong and how do we convince others JWs are wrong: logic versus persuasion
by slimboyfat inwe like to think we are logical and have good reasons for for our beliefs.
no more so than when it comes to our reasons for rejecting the truth claims of jws.
we reject their version of history, such as the date of the fall of jerusalem, because it doesn't agree with the historical evidence.

I think like many people we were 'softened up' first by the attitude of elders and my husband having an inside view of how they treated the congregation, especially the very vulnerable. The depressed, the sick and elderly and women on their own.
Then we found Crisis of Conscience in the library and started to address the facts. The 1914 teaching because of what Franz found while researching the Aid Book, the history and structure of the organization and the disfellowshipping of doctrinal dissenters.
I don't think it's something to hide or be embarrassed about that you first were affected by the lack of love. They were always saying that in public talks weren't they? Brothers say there's no love in this organization. Tut tut. They meant weak people of course. They talk endlessly of love and goodness so if it's lacking it's no surprise people will remark on it and wonder if it's really the truth.
So SBF it can be a response to poor treatment that starts people looking for the facts but after all the religion preaches love is a sign of true Christianity so those who despair of finding it in JWs and start to wonder about it all are facing facts. The truth about religion and its inability to bring peace and love.

A Hard Lesson Learned
by Disassociated Lady 2 indo you remember that my dad passed away last year and i was going back to the witnesses after 26 years?
i got reinstated after going there for 9 months.
in the 5 months since then i felt the men in the congregation didn't want me there.

I'm so sorry you've been put through this. How awful to be interrogated by those monsters for two hours like you are some sort of criminal. How dare they! It must have saddened you that your own mother wouldn't take you in.
I couldn't understand why you would go back until I read about your father. Well you kept your promise to him, you are an honourable woman, enjoy the rest of your life. I'm looking forward to your posts on the forum.

Benefits to Faith over Reason
by cobweb ini wrote this earlier for my own benefit in order to get some thoughts straight in my head.
it is just my own personal pondering on what i think might be the motivating force behind having a faith.
it is not intended to attack, provoke or patronize anyone who has a belief and i hope it is not taken in that way.

It does make sense. Belief is a powerful thing psychologically. People who believe in themselves because they were raised by parents who believed in them have a huge advantage over those who weren't. The placebo effect illustrates the reality of belief.
If only we could harness the power of belief in a non-religious way. I supposes this is what all the business gurus and life coaches are trying to do. To get us to raise our positivity and so believe in life and our own personal power.
I do remember the feeling of having a strong belief that I was being looked after by God and angels. It was powerful, even fantasy can energise and motivate. I suppose what we're talking about here is the power of the human brain to accomplish things if we believe it's possible. It's a fascinating subject, thanks cobweb.
