I don't know the source of that cartoon, but would love to find out. I found it via a Google image search of "Jehovah" where it was labeled as "an outsider's view," though it's not far off from some of the "inside" cartoons one sees in the Rutherford era.

i always liked the wt definition of "truth".. too bad what they teach has been the antithesis of that definition, as i relate in my latest blog: the watchtower sense of "true".. as for me, i love the truth!

Because you show no evidence whatever of having any familiarity with the considerable amount of scholarship / commentary on these stories that begins with an understanding of exactly what the stories contains. And there is a lot of it that you have not considered.
You don't know what I have considered. I have read more books and taken more classes about the Bible and religion than I care to admit (and how I wish I had that time back again to spend more fruitfully!) I feel that I've certainly spent more than enough time to make an informed decision. I'm not going to try to share all of that in a reply to a post: who would or could? So, no; you may not see evidence of it here, but I don't think that justifies making assumptions and calling people names based on those assumptions.
And yet, you still had your mind blown when you read all the bad stories in the OT. Was your bible missing Judges, Kings, and Genesis? But I hope you can see why someone like you, who finds all that stuff amazing and concludes that the whole thing is bunk probably hasn't a clue about what she is reading.
No, I really can't see why you would assume that I haven't a clue. My Bible did contain those books, that's why I was amazed when I read them. I had been taught that the god of the Bible was a god of love. It turns out he was a god of war. Yes, non-fundamentalists may have already known this, but as JWs we did not, and this happens to be a JW forum. So why are you amazed by our reaction when we first discover that the Bible is not "God's Word"? Yes, we were "dumb" to have ever believed this, but it's rather rude of you to say so.
What claim do you suppose is being made in the OT that is not true? Was that claim supposed to be that followers of YHWH are transformed into 21st century humanists? Was that claim supposed to be that King David was a man who kept control of his appetites? What was it, in your estimation?
Where does one begin to answer a question like that? There are so many obviously false claims to choose from! How about the claim that Moses talked with God and God told him that one of the original ten commandments was not to boil a kid in its mother's milk ( Ex:34:26) . That's a claim in the OT that I suppose is not true. Since you're so much smarter than I am, let me humbly ask: Do you suppose it is true?

First of all, I don't know why you assume we've reached our conclusion on the basis of "one book" and have never considered the other side (and because of this we are "dumb").
As JWs we heard the "other side" ad nauseum. I can't speak for others, but in my case I was raised a Catholic and spent countless hours in religious classes learning all about the Bible from that perspective. How many different believers' perspectives does one have to endure before you'll say that their conclusion was not based on limited input? Okay, I also read Protestant works. Does that help? How about reading the Bible itself twice, cover-to-cover?
Yes, there are "smarter" people than me. Yes some of them say that not all of the Bible is garbage (in fact I say that myself. For instance, when the anonymous writer puts the following words in Jesus' mouth: "Why do you not decide for yourselves what is right?")
There are other "smarter" people than me who say that the Bible is more garbage than it is useful. So "smartness" really has no relevance here.
It isn't who is smart and who is dumb. It is: who can see past the horizon of their own culture and examine their beliefs objectively to determine if they are as true as they claim to be.

Yeah, I remember the first Bible contradiction I heard. I was astounded: there it was, undeniable in black and white. I said to myself, "This can't be; the GB told me there were no contradictions!" Yet there it was. Of course it was only the tip of the iceberg as I soon discovered. And the contradictions were the least of it: the real mind-blowing came when I realized what the Bible was actually all about: a petty, vain, cruel god of war worshipped by barbaric men who ran around committing atrocities while claiming their god told them it was okay!
Eventually I reread the entire Bible for myself cover-to-cover and captured my findings in a book: The Cure for Fundamentalism which is free to read on my website.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the blood issue. I have no children, but am old enough to be a grandfather. If I had a daughter who was about to join a cult that forbade blood transfusions to children you better believe that I'd be all over that -- to the point of seeking custody over her child. I could tolerate believing that "magic is bad" or that God has one head instead of three, etc... But I could not tolerate endangering my grandchild's life.
So Yes, I would definitely speak to my daughter about this with a real sense of urgency before she went any further down that path.

How did this happen? Well, it wasn't by distributing Watchtowers to the needy (remember the one that showed famine victims and said their greatest need was "spiritual food"?!)
It was done by organizations such as UNICEF. Just like the WT they are looking forward to the day when there are no starving children. The big difference is that they are actually doing something about it instead of stupidly waiting for Armageddon to solve everything.
The goal is zero: zero children dying a day from preventable causes (as well as zero children denied an education -- but there'd have to be no JWs before that could be a reality). You can take part in making this goal a reality by simply signing their pledge "I believe in zero". For each pledge made a packet of oral rehydration salts will be rushed to a child at risk from dehydration!

2. Mormonism
3. Jehovah's Witnesses
Maybe we'll have negative-gravity energy-packs in the New Order, but the Mormons have magic underpants already today!

after all they have taken on thr reins of power over a corporation that has very bad,, dead end business stradagy based on a dellusional idea that the end of the world would come based on dates found or imagined in the bible,, a book about ancient deity worship with all its superstition about what make him angry and mad.. they have bought into this dellusion with their heart and soul,,they stand to loss big time now that the internet is here,, the internet is their satan and his demons on the net are taking aim..

That seems a valid conclusion from the Bible, but I don't believe in the Bible or its un-empathetic god.
It may be foolish, but my human heart still holds empathy for these deluded men, though not to the same extent as it does for the millions they mislead.
