you should never talk to the police and always let an investigation be made through counsel.
This is the case with any legal contact with police. There are a few very important things [at least in the United States] that one should be ready to say in any legal interaction with police. These were courtesy of a woman defense attorney whom I dated for some time.
1. I have nothing to say without legal counsel present. Then SHUT UP! They cannot hold un-spoken words against you.
2. If they persist in questioning you then ask, "Am I under arrest?" If the answer is "No" then leave.
3. If they say you are under arrest then refer back to number 1
I have successfully employed these statements more than once.
