I just can't imagine anyone who has had a chold molested, allowing that person back in their home and around their children again. Pedophiles have a very high rate of repeating their crime.
Unfortunately a reasonable, realistic approach is not appreciated by many.

Xandit, non-smokers are also released form hospital earlier than smokers--they have less respiratory complications. That might be a big factor in why jws as a group are released earlier.
I agree with the others here that stated that they would refuse blood if other options could be used. But it's nice to be able to choose for myself without worrying about having to figure out what is and isn't allowed.

Mommy, I think you're right. All statistics aside, if someone has lost their life because they adhered to an insupportable doctrine, then they (the org) bears the responsibility, imho.

This could be true for blood transfusions as well.

philo, I was just thinking, if todays statistics have improved, i.e. with new testing procedures, then there is probably less of a chance in dying as a result of transfused blood. Also, I was told by an MD, that the use of blood has dropped. So that it's only used in critically ill patients, no longer as a standard procedure. I'm wondering if the mortality rates reflect whether the patient dies as a direct result of having been transfused? I hope this makes sense, but if you get a statistic that says 1/100 patients transfused dies, it may not a be reliable reflection of transfusion complications, but that in many hopitals, blood is only used if deemeed absolutely necesarry, therefore the patient is already in trouble medically. That's the trend in Canada, at least.
If you can find some statistics, can you find out the variables used to compare the patients? 100 nontransfused jws undergoing a surgical procedure do not compare equally with 100 patients that have been transfused, unless their medical conditions are equal. Actually, you wouldn't have to even control for medical condition, use all levels. There must be a study out there that simply compares the two groups as a whole. Jws undergoing surgery and heathens undergoing surgery.

i was asked the other day whether i believed in heaven and/or hell, and i almost started spouting jw doctrine before i stopped myself and really pondered the question.. it's a different world when you have to start thinking for yourself instead of letting the organization think for you.
when i left the jw's, i pretty much left religion in general, i dont consider myself agnostic, but i question everything religious i was ever taught.
from "does god exist" to "evolution", "faith", "death", everything i "knew" is under suspicion now.. so back to the topic, the witnesses teach: there is heaven, but only 144,000 get to go, there is no hell, only non-existance upon our death.

This is interesting because I heard a former jehovahs-witnesses on another discussion forum basically say that even though he didn't believe in the doctrines of the witnesses, at least they teach the truth about hell. Which to him, made them better than other religions.
That struck me as funny. For me, what he is saying is that he likes their misunderstanding (remember he doesn't believe what they teach) of armageddon and paradise earth better than the misunderstanding of hell. All because their misunderstanding makes the god he doesn't believe in seem nicer. People confuse me.
at the 1994 district convention in bismark, north dakota, (could possibly have been 93) my sister wrote a note to her friend and tossed it in the garbage.
the note contained a discussion about going to boy's hotel rooms after the sessions ended, and other troublesome activities, including lying to the parents about what my sister and her friend were doing.. presumably, an attendant found this note in the garbage and turned it into the elders.
on the last talk of the last day of the convention, the note was read out loud to the entire audience, along with the warning that "whoever you are, we will find you.

Xandit, I didn't look for the second quote in the awake, but this appears on the official webite for jehovah's witness.

The quote is from 1960. I wonder what the recent statistics are? I would think with all the precautions now, it would be less--therefore less likely to die from transfused blood. That is only a guess. If they used 1960 statistics in the 1992 Awake, that wouldn't make sense. I'd like to see the actual quote from the awake and the context. I'm doing a search on blood transfusions and mortality rates.

I know focus misrepresented the Doctor as being "sympathetic" to jehovah's witnesses, but is there something in the mathematical analysis that you see as false?
This is what I disagree with:
Worldwide JW Memorial attendance is a good approximation to the number of JWs and dependents (for whom JWs would make life-or-death decisions) - it currently runs at about 15.5 million judging
by their own claims.
I think the 90% assumption on that figure is generous. The hall I went to increased by about 100 people at memorial time. That included a lot of studies and their families who never came to the hall again.
I do believe that they are blood guilty, no matter what statistics you come up with.

judgemental and closeminded were exact descriptions of my former jw self.. recently on another forum, someone posted a cartoon depicting the character urinating on the bible.
i had an immediate revulsion and concluded this was not appropriate, letting the poster know my thoughts.
other's on the forum did not see it as i did.

As for open minded, I wonder, did you think the person who posted a picture of the bible being peed on was open minded? I think you were the one being open minded in that instance. Why was your expression of distaste close minded and the other person's expression of distaste for the bible open minded?
