Origin of shunning
by anointed1 insatan loves his own people and hates those who do not share his views, hence only he can use shunning as a weapon.. on the contrary, god is love (agape = unconditional love), cannot have his own people.
(mathew 5:44-48).
all the accounts not in conformity with this principle originated from cleric’s pen (jeremiah 7:31; 8:8).

Do you think I should get something for my wife for her birthday?
by schnell inmy wife is still nominally in, but only because it "makes me (her) happy".
there is nothing academic about her beliefs and when i try, she interprets me as negative.. but then she cusses like a sailor and watches certain movies with me.
her birthday is coming up and it's also right around valentine's day.

You might want to try giving it directly after her Bday. JWs are legalists after all, and this always worked for my mother.

undeserved kindness vs. grace
by nowwhat? inundeserved kindness means- you puny humans are irredemable and worthless, but because i am such a benevolent and magnanimous god.
i give you a way for salvation.
but you better keep working day in and day out for the rest of your miserable lives and perhaps i'll save you on my day of wrath.

"If someone says to us that God has rights but not responsibilities because He is stronger than we are, we say that this is what we mean by an impious saying. He may even dare to add that God is everything to us, but we are nothing to Him, whereas the contrary is true. God, who is infinitely greater than us, contracted an infinite debt in putting us into the world. He has dug the pit of human weakness which only He can fill in."

Leaving a small minority group.....
by The Rebel inhas a profound influence on our life.
on the one hand we have the background of our childhood, our upbringing, but when we leave and become apart of society, our witness traits and their set of beliefs are not tailored to fit in.
however as i slowly learnt to know longer judge from the perspective of my witness life, i also learnt i am simply an ordinary person.

I envy you. When I was in the WT I may have felt alienated from mainsteam society, but at least I felt at home in the KH.
Now I just feel alienated, period.
I am very keen to understand how you can feel such solidarity with mainstream society. Isn't it just a cult writ large with its own silly rules and prejudices? Its own outgroups?
Being a JW has made me cynical of all groups because I can see the same patterns of behavior in them all. For that reason I've rejected the idea of being a member of any group; though I do have friends.

Watchtower No.3 2017 - The Four Horesmen
by pale.emperor inthis is the first time i've read through a watchtower magazine in about a year.
although i've been our only 8 months it really git me how crazy i must have sounded when i was a jw talking to non jws.. while other bible based religions talk about the 4 horsemen and back up their theories with other scriptures or historical evidence, the watchtower have taken so such steps.
1914 is thrown in there as if it's universally agreed that jesus started ruling since then.. even when i was a jw i never really understood why, if the pale horse represents jesus, why is he first?

In most Christian eschatologies I am familar with Jesus has a duel role. In his first incarnation he could be described as peaceful because his mission was to become a human sacrifice to free humanity from the debt of sin.
However, now that this has been achieved, his role has changed. In his second coming he will act as judge and executioner of those who refuse to accept him as lord, hence his inclusion as one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Why do you get upset about family shunning you?
by mr_doubtful ini understand people love their family but i also don't understand why you end up caring in the end.
i'm ready to leave and i 100% don't expecting my family to have any contact with me nor do i want them to contact me.
if they are going to chose a man made religion over me, that's their choice and i will sleep easy at night.

All I know for certain is what is here and now. My children are only young once. When they are grown it's over. When my nieces, nephews, and friends children are grown I will never get back the time when we could have enriched each others lives. This is one of the many reasons I mourn the shunning policy. Life is precious and short, and we waste so much time with nonsense that it's depressing.
I know how you feel. Two of my friends are married now; but I wasn't invited (or even informed) about the weddings and I haven't met either of their spouses. If it weren't for Facebook I wouldn't know anything.

Conditional Love
by Saethydd ini've noticed several posts recently claiming that jw friends and family members give out conditional love.
well, i'm not so sure that is entirely accurate, in fact, i would say they tend to be very steadfast in their love.
the issue is this, they have been taught a poor form of love.

I suppose that if a JW sincerely believes that:
- Apostates will be killed in Armegeddon and
- Shunning an apostate will motivate them to return to the fold
Then shunning could be a (misguided) display of love or a form of "tough love". However, I often got the impression as a JW that it was really more about protecting one's own reputation by not consorting with unclean people like apostates and nonbelievers. Apostasy is analogous to a disease and so the wisest thing to do is to enforce a quarantine until the diseased person is cured.

Smurf thing? What, that they're "DEMONIZED?!"
I haven't read the book, but I remember some crazy shit back in the day about the dumbest things. Smurfs, Mork and Mindy, the Legend of Zelda... Just ugh.
I don't remember anything about Mork & Mindy, but there were several smurf urban legends circulation among JW congregation in the mid nineties (and obviously before).
- In the first legend a little girl buys a smurf novelty necklace and places it around her neck before going to sleep. The next morning her parents find her dead. She had been strangled by the possessed necklace.
- In the second legend, a little boy brings a smurf plush doll to the Sunday meeting. In the middle of the talk the doll suddenly springs to life and yells "I can't listen to this shit anymore!" He then hops out of the boy's lap and walks out the exit (presumably one of the ushers opened it for him).
Keep in mind that these were not just funny stories told between JW kids during sleepovers. Adult JWs believed this nonsense, otherwise they wouldn't have forbidden their kids from owning smurf paraphernalia.
