  It's from the January 2017 Watchtower. You can read the associated article here.

  The gist is that we shouldn't worry about things like poverty, illness and impolite householders because there is absolutely nothing we can do about these things (other, than you know, getting a better education, eating healthy and finding something more productive to do with our Sundays). Instead, we should focus on what we can do, such as giving our last, useless mite to the worldwide propaganda fund, looking forward to paradise and moving on to the next angry householder. Everything is ultimately in Jehovah's negligent hands, so we may as well resign ourselves to our life as it is and trust in Him.

  What a relief, huh?

  I don't know where the GB is going anymore. One week they will say doubt is okay and not even they know everything; but then at the same time they are becoming stricter and more dictatorial. The tight pants thing actually made me laugh the first time I heard about it, but now that it is in the WT magazine as an official rule it's no longer funny, just weird and sad. They also seem to be really emphasizing obedience and soliciting donations far more than just a few years ago. The Watchtower illustration about the starving old woman with an empty refrigerator tossing her last few cents into a donation box was just outrageous! It's one thing to guilt rich bastards into handing over their cash; but old ladies on welfare?

  Attack near St Catherine's Monastery

  following on from the bombings of coptic churches in egypt, there was an attack earlier this month on a checkpoint near st catherine's monastery.

  this monastery dates back to the time of justinian and has a number of early bible mss including part of codex sinaiticus of the fourth century.. i am surprised this hasn't happened before because isis is active in northern sinai and it would be a major event were they to gain access and wreak havoc at st catherine's monastery.

  although the isolation of the monastery has contributed to its survival over 1400 years, it is in the forefront of digitising its manuscript collection.

  The destruction of old buildings is inexcusable, but as for human life? I console myself with the thought that if the Christians were the majority, they would treat the Muslims just as ruthlessly as the Muslims are now treating them; and everything I know about Christian history tells me this is true. Who would you pity more, the Bloods or the Crips?

  Do religious people fear that their religion may be wrong???

  because there are so many religions in the world and it is obvious that no matter what the truth is, a large population of people will be wrong about it.

  we at one time believe we had the truth and 99% of the world population were in darkness, but i wonder about folks in other religions today.

  speaking with a christian friend about this and he told me," that's for god to decide, i hope i'am serving god"...the sad thing about all of this if one die and still believe in his religion, he will never know he was in the wrong religion.

  Do religious people fear that their religion may be wrong? I heard the best answer to this question from the mouth of a JW:

  Speaking for myself, I was much more afraid my religion was right. Discovering that there is no malevolent omnipotent deity in charge of the universe who actually allowed things like the Catholic Inquisition and Nazi Holocaust to happen is something that, to this day, I take great consolation in. Some people say Atheism is a bleak and hopeless philosophy. Compared to what?

  Striking Out On My Own

  those of you who know my story are aware that i'm currently disfellowshipped and living with my parents.

  up until now, my plan has been to be reinstated and then fade, but recently my plans have changed.

  in a conversation with my mother a few days ago and she made it clear that she would not be okay with me getting reinstated with the purpose of going inactive.

  Man, I wish I had planned ahead like you did before I left. Congratulations on NOT being an emotional, impulsive apostate! My own parting of ways with the WT was sprung on me, but I did nothing in terms of preparation after I'd been exposed.

  I think you should write the letters. It will be good to know that your friends and family know exactly where you stand even if they choose to distort your words through the fun house mirror that is Watchtower dogma. Hopefully they will keep those letters and one day their message will sink in.

  This seems to have been happening every couple years since the Bakers were busted. Kent Hovind got put away a while back for the same crime.

  Witnesses are deluded with their conditional "love" and imagine that it's like a light switch that can be flicked on and off. The human brain doesn't work that way.

  I agree and yet this is exactly how the brain of a JW does seem to work. There were some exceptions - one of my friends began to tear up when we met each other by accident outside the KH - but in most cases of DFing I have witnessed, the shunners don't seem to experience any remorse are internal conflict over what they are doing. Perhaps they were simply hiding their feeling very well, but the point is I saw no evidence which would have suggested this.

  Simon: The reality is it's probably neither and both.

  You are probably right. I'm no expert on sexuality, but experience has taught me that there is almost never a single cause behind any phenomenon; most effects are the result of multiple chains of causality that come together to form 'the perfect storm'.

  I had one gay friend who confided in me that he was 'abused' as a child by several older males. I put 'abused' in quotation marks because he said that he really didn't consider himself a victim and in fact enjoyed every second of it. This man was not into boys at all; he liked big, hairy manly men! In his case I suspect that he was probably just born gay; though I'm sure a fundy Christian would point to his early sexual experiences as the root of his homosexual feelings. I think if he had been straight, he would have looked back on those experiences in very different light. The lucky bloke hit the jackpot!

  But on the nurture end, I could use my own kink as an example: I'm straight, but I have been a hardcore masochist for as long as I can remember. When I was six years old I was already the sub of a very domineering and sexually precocious little girl who would molest me at our daycare when no one else was around. When I was seven I had a crush on my summer school teacher; a young woman who was as cruel as she was beautiful... I remember having sexual fantasies about her before I even knew what sex was. Could my early sexual experiences have predisposed me towards lusting after cruel and domineering women? There is no 'could have' about it.

  It's an interesting question on a purely academic level, but what's always bothered me about the nature vs nurture debate on sexuality is the implication that the answer could have moral implications. If someone is born with a certain sexual preference then it is utterly pointless to try to change them, let alone condemn them; but if it's a result of imprinting at an early age then perhaps gays, sado-masochists and even pedophiles could be 'cured' someday. Maybe they should be forced to seek treatment.

  I don't have an opinion either way but I am personally very happy to see that scientists are looking for a biological cause rather than a psychological one. If the only way for prudes to finally accept the sexually different is to say "well, they were born that way so there is nothing to be done." then I am all for it. I just hope that it doesn't backfire to "Well, we can't change them, so let's kill 'em!"
