SFJim,
I would warn her. She may already be privy as to what the JWs are about, you never know. I am sure you will use enough tact under the circumstances.
i have long believed in separating my personal life from life in the workplace, and rarely discuss matters of a private nature with co-workers.. i work with a woman who has a young daughter (early 20's) who has terminal cancer and probably only weeks left to live.
i've known this woman for a number of years and know her to be sensitive, and compassionate, having a deep faith in god.. i just found out last week that another one of my co-workers is a jw.
i have no intention of "outing" myself to her and she has no idea that she works side-by-side with someone who was disfellowshipped 21 years ago.. my concern is this: today, the jw co-worker approached me and asked me if i know where my other co-worker lives "because i'd like to talk with her about something very important".

It pertains to those who do not want to work like so many today.

rabotnik,
You are right about the percentages. I live in Norhtern California about 20 miles from the capitol Sacramento. The Hispanics are gaining ground fast and will continue to take up ground here as long as our liberal jackass politicians continue to give our money away. What I am talking about is all those that come to the US and get on the dole. Stop the money flow to those that can work but don't and I think you will see a turn-around in those coming from Mexico. I don't mind people coming to California as long as they are productive citizens and carry their own. I say this not just about the Hispanics but also all races that take up residence in the US. We have our share of white trash welfare suckers over here and don't need to be paying for anymore with our tax dollars. The taxes here in California are outrageous. I run my own business and I know what I am talking about when it comes to taxes.
"don't you think it would surely be impossible for a person to become a jehovah's witness by reading the bible alone?
can someone really come to believe jehovah's witness doctrine by reading the bible only?
for example, if you were to have only read the bible, with no watchtower study aids, do you think that you would have come to the conclusion that heaven closed its doors in 1935, or that jesus is really the archangel micheal?
Hello agent2863,
I understood your point and agree with you. As far as the Wt discouraging you from using your Bible, I do not think that is the case as much as it is they want you busy reading their publications and comparing the Watchtower distortions with the Bible. I was always able to question the Bible without to many eyebrows raised. When it came to questioning and disagreeing with the WT and the present truth at that time, it became a major no no among the elders and especially letting others in the congregation know what you did not agree with.

agent2863,
I think it would be almost impossible to become a follower of just about any denomination by reading the Bible alone. But then again, there are a lot of stupid, ignorant people out there.
i seem to remember reading somewhere that the tie is a phallic symbol.
can anybody shed any light on that.
if this is so it should go the way of beards, birthdays, the cross, rock music, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.
All this talk about phallic symbols. Surrounding my home are 7 huge palm trees, four palm trees surround our pool. The largest palm tree is in the front of the house. I have several strands of Christmas lights all different colors and most blink in different modes surrounding the tree in the front yard. It looks like a huge light tower. Most everyone in town drives by at Christmas to see how many more lights I have adorned the palm tree with. This tree is about 40 feet high, maybe more. The neighbors have named the tree as the lighted phallic symbol.
You can imagine the looks on the JWs face when they drive by at Christmas.
today i found out that the elder i admired and thought to be above reproach, was commiting adultery.
the body of elders found out, and he was not removed.
he also gave his part at the assembly.. this is the same elder that told me not to get married.
rollercoaster,
I know of an elder who was seeing a married woman with 3 kids while her husband was working. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out there was more going on then studying one of the Societies latest publications. To make a long story short, the elder ended up marrying the whore of a woman and they both have custody of the three kids. They are all JWs. The elder was never even reproved. There was a lot of back stabbing and lying involved against the husband.
What happened to the poor sap that was out working while his wife and MR Spiritual were playing games? He has not seen his kids for over five years. His son who was 6 at the time of their last conversation told his dad he was going to die in armageddon if he did not start going to the meetings and worshipping Jehovah.
I know this story all to well. The elder in question is my biological brother.

Test
i remember at a book study the conductor saying something about ho simple everything was and that anyone of us could easily talk for a minute about our beliefs.. everybody froze of course and was hoping he wouldn't pick them.. no one could or wanted to do it even amongst each other !.
it's a sad indictment of the 'faith' isn't it.
i have a theory that 90% of jw's could not tell you what the current beliefs were.
Simon,
I bet your theory is right about 90% of JWs cannot tell you what their current beliefs are. I wager that the percentage of JWs not knowing the (EXACT) history of the WT is about 99%. Since my departure from the org in 1989, I have had several dealings with JWs. There has only been two active JWs that I have dealt with that new some of the history and start of the WT. The rest new virtually nothing other than the names of the presidents, Russell, Rutherford, etc.
