Gold! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I remember spending afternoons with parents deciding which cassettes and CDs needed to be ditched. Nuts!!

Thank you, George Couch!
by charonsdog ini just thought i'd share this story from my past.. back in the 80s i remember the big problem seemed to be about music.
(today, it's tight pants, i guess) the organization, society, whatever they were calling themselves, were always going on about the music we listened to.
disco, heavy metal, the whole "backwards masking" thing...couldn't escape hearing or reading about how satan was corrupting us unless we were listening to kingdom melodies or elevator music.. i was assigned to wtf in the late 80s and remember one of the articles stating that "young people know that the rhythm of rock music is the rhythm of sexual intercourse.

Can you top this example of JW corruption?
by Mace.Bean inif you are a former jw elder, can you share any examples of corruption which you personally witnessed that were kept secret from the congregation?
following is an account from a longtime elder named tommy who recently disassociated.. the minor daughter of a presiding elder in a west texas congregation committed fornication with a 19-year old baptized witness in her father’s home.
the daughter had to confess to a judicial committee which included the aforementioned tommy.

It is such stories which confirm that holy spirit has nothing to do with the appointment of elders.
It also confirms that God is not real to those taking the lead and they cannot believe that God sees all that they do.

What a brave man your brother is. If he is anything like my son, changes are hard to handle but he made a decision to change his life and remove himself from the religion and people who caused so much anxiety.
New carers will initially be a cause of anxiety but also the best thing for him. A complete break from JW world. The elders actually wouldn't need to tell the carers to quit. Unless his carers are waking up they would quit without being told.
He will be able to be his true self and have carers with no agenda other than to sincerely assist him to survive in a neurotypical world.
He will need you more than ever now. The one family member who will accept him as he is.

Are JWs capable of a genuine discussion?
by stuckinarut2 ini was just pondering whether jws are capable of having a calm, in depth discussion about religious or faith topics?.
i have just finished listening to a great podcast by "dogma debate" (dan) episode 333. this fantastic, in-depth conversation between a theist and an atheist was a masterful example of how a dignified conversation can take place without it resorting to abruptness or even nastiness.. jws on the other hand seem incapable of having such discussion without ending up in the following ways:.
1)they get dogmatic and defensive if a differing view is presented.. 2)if the conversation doesn't go their way, they cut it short saying something like "well, we had better agree to disagree" or the like.. so why the arrogance?

They get offensive and aggressive because their beliefs don't stack up or hold up under proper scrutiny.

12 years is a long time. Was he always a drinker? Do you love him? Are you only now looking to dump him because you want to pursue a new life in the new found religion?
There is help for those with drinking problems. As has already been said you should talk to him about it and demand he get help to quit. If you love him, stick around to support him. If you don't then the ball is in your court.
No religion should put you in a position where you think you need to leave your loved ones. Ask yourself what would Jesus do? He was kind and merciful and showed love for those in need.

What they do now can hardly be called bible study anymore.
I was raised a JW and was just saying to my very zealous mother that bible study has gone out the window and now they study watchtowers on how to sing and to remember to be loyal to the organization and not speak to your family members who no longer believe that the JWs are the only ones who will survive Armageddon.
My children worked out long ago that picking scriptures and putting them together to make a point you want others to believe is not accurate or honest nor can it be classed as bible study.

Greetings Matthew. It's called "love bombing". All new comers are warmly welcomed and "accepted" as they are. Keep your eyes open and take note.
How many have you met with nose piercing? I would bet none. Those with tattoos will have received those prior to joining the religion.
If you love bible study make sure you research everything there is to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses and their doctrine from the very beginning.
Like with every "new" thing you may purchase, read the "user reviews" and not just the "manufacturer advertisement brochures".
Ephesians 5:10 says to keep making sure what is acceptable to the Lord.
This forum is a great place to gain insight into the life of a Jehovah's Witness and you will find we are predominantly ex members.
Good luck in your search for the truth.

What to Do....Please Help. Awakening JW for a very long time
by CovertsadJW ingood afternoon , .
i have been having doubts for many years and as most jw's i have certainly not done myself a favor by suppressing all of my critical thinking.
i am married with 3 kids and my wife and i are inactive, but my wife has made it very clear in speech and action that she wants to go to all meetings, field service, and indoctrinate our kids.

I don't have an issue with my husband but I do however have very pushy family who constantly request we return to meetings and badger my children.
It's no use sharing what you know and everyone needs to find out the truth for themselves.
What I do now is refer them to Romans 14:12 "each of us will render an account for himself to God". If we go because we are forced or to make others happy Jehovah who sees what the heart is (1 Sam 16:7) will not be fooled.
You could let your wife know that she can go to meetings and in service and that it is not your intention to force her to stop but you must also be allowed to make your choices based on your knowledge and mutual respect must prevail for the sake of a peaceful family arrangement for your children.
Your children may well need to go with your wife to the meetings. Make sure they can talk to you about things they are learning so that you can help them use their critical thinking skills.
The last thing I would make sure of is that the children are not forced into baptism. Remind your wife and extended family that Jesus himself did not get baptised until he was 30 so if they want the children to follow in his footsteps they too should wait until they are adults.
In my case, my children were not fooled and recognized early on that "the truth" is not the truth.
