Context decides the correct meaning, as Cofty, rightly brought out. But the problem with those who remained in darkness for a long time is that even when they are shown the light, they would still behave like the man in The Tale of Two Cities of Charles Dickens. He had been imprisoned for several long years. At long last, he was set free. Prison authorities led him out of his dark cell into the bright and beautiful sunshine outside. For a moment, he gazed at the blue sky and the bright sun -but his eyes were dazzled. He turned and walked back to his cell, covering his eyes with his hands. He had grown so accustomed to the darkness that he could not face the light any more! The dark cell seemed to him to be a secure haven.

Refuting Watchtarded Reasoning - 1. "If a doctor tells you to abstain from alcohol, you wouldn't inject it..."
by Island Man ini'm hoping to start a series of posts refuting common, fallacious jw reasoning that they repeat to support their teachings or defend their organization.
in this first installment i will be tackling the common fallacious analogy used by them to equate eating blood with receiving a transfusion.
feel free to share your own refutations on each thread.. "if a doctor tells you to abstain from alcohol you wouldn't go injecting it into your veins, would you?".

If you had the power ....
by Landy in...would you choose to ban the jw religion?.
if you wouldn't ban them what, if any, changes would you force upon them?.

I would not recommend a ban.
Knowing them very well I would like to see them living with their false conviction that all except them are doomed.

Some powerful stuff against the WT
by Giordano inin another thread a poster has been in a pitched fight with others about the results from the arc.
trying to explain away the results and minimizing the damages.
what he has failed to understand is that the society had and still does have certain policies in place that hide the sexual abuse of minors.

This shows their sins are more serious than the soldier who pierced Jesus' heart for whom Jesus prayed: "forgive him for he does not know what he is doing."
But here JW leadership knows what they are doing!

Evolution knowledge prevailing over a Jehovah’s Witness!
by anointed1 inyesterday i had an interesting visitor—my long-time school friend.
we both studied with jws together, and he progressed to dedication and baptism whereas i stopped before the final step and got transferred to another place.
after the routine conversations, he said: “you know how much your family members long to see you take up the truth ….. before it is too late, i would suggest you start tasting jehovah.”.

You wrote your comments when I was sleeping. Hence this delayed response.
You three are correct in saying I should not have compared religion with childishness. Yet there is a reason I did so because it worked with me when my professor (who was also my great friend) used the same phrase to me when I told him I was studying with JWs. Though it seemed offensive to me in the beginning, it was like a powerful seed—it grew like a gigantic tree within me that uprooted all religions from my mind as childish, hence I did not take the final step of dedication and baptism with JW org. whose teachings also I found childish such as God going after Satan to prove a point at too great a cost of bloodshed that can fill even the oceans …

We deserve to die
by elfgoblin inat the meeting today, we were reading the watchtower and this elder apologetically said to such a degree in regards to romans 5:12 that "we humans are not worthy of any mercy from jehovah.
we shouldn't even have free will because we can't possibly do anything good enough to please jehovah.
we don't even deserve life because of sin.

Heraclitus had the overall view, and wrote: “It is not good for people to get all they wish to get. It is sickness that makes health pleasant; evil, good; hunger, plenty; weariness, rest.”

Phizzy,
You stole the show. What I could not express it perfectly, you did it. Thank you for that--that's what exactly I had in my mind.

Cofty: What do you mean by "science is the religion of adults"?
An average believer (child) “knows” (not the real knowledge) that what his religion teaches is “The Truth” (in inverted coma)
On the other hand adults know (really know) that what science teaches is The Truth (not in inverted coma).
It is in this “Science is the religion of adults.”

cofty,
I was putting it in layman's language, also I had to bring it in brief what Richard Dawkins says in very lengthy details, hence I thought of presenting it in a picturesque mode (though I know it would look awkward to the advanced learners of Evolution)

I agree with you tepidpoultry
When people are repeatedly told Romans 5:12 they mistake it as truth, and begin to believe that ‘we are sinners, we have a limit …’ hence they do not even feel that change is possible. James Belasco and Ralph Stayer wrote in their 1994 book Flight of the Buffalo: “Change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have – and underestimate the value of what they may gain by giving that up.”

While expounding the meaning of the expression God created man in His image, Ecclesiasticus 15:15 says “If you choose to do good, you can” and you are “able to perform acceptable faithfulness.”
This shows OT prophets had totally different concepts which are in direct conflict with NT teachings. This explains why such books were excluded from Canon.
