If they have a signed consent by her husband, who was making decisions on her behalf in the throes of an emergency where she herself was unable to consent, the case should have been thrown out of court.

I started watching it last night (recorded on my PVR under "Toddlers in Tiaras" ).
It felt like a bunch of religionists going "Oh no he DIT'N!" vs a bunch of multiverse scientists going "Yo momma" this and "Yo momma" that. I turned it off by 15 minutes in.

Need some advice, PLEASE!
by TweetieBird ini don't even know where to begin but i'm having trouble with my oldest son (grown) who just moved back home.
he recently got fired and kicked out by his roommate because he has (in my opinion and the rest of my family) an alcohol and pot problem.
he doesn't think he does because he can go days without either, a whole other story.

He needs to go to a physician, to rule out or treat clinical depression, and then be referred to someone who can better diagnose possible mental illness. A positive family history of schizophrenia and substance abuse to self medicate is, in my professional opinion, a red flag that needs to be investigated.
The fact that your son is an adult complicates things somewhat, because you can't force him into treatment unless there is risk of harm to himself or others. Since he agreed to attend counselling, it sounds as though he wants to get to the bottom of things and find out what is going on.
An upbringing in the JWs (or other fundamentalist belief systems) can sometimes create some deep-seated phobias (Armageddon™, demons, etc.) that persist long after a person exits the belief system. Perhaps if he is in fact schizophrenic he could be having auditory / visual hallucinations that are based in JW lore, and wreaking havoc with him emotionally and mentally. It's definitely worth investigating.

Caught Crying
by discreetslave ini was reading some ex-jw experiences and i started crying.
a flood of emotions came over me, anger, guilt, sorrow, grief, and fear.. anger over being deceived and betrayed.anger over the stupidity regarding child abuse.
i was abused before being a jw and this is an issue i feel strongly about.. guilt for bringing others into jw matrix.

What do JWs call it when they (as ex-Catholics, perhaps?) participate along with the WTS in bashing the Catholic Church??
They say they've "moved on to better things" when they do that?? Do they leave the Catholic Church and its scandals alone??
No, they call it telling the truth and exposing false religion.
With due respect to your husband, perhaps you could point out that someone who feels they were tricked into joining a group (by having information controlled/withheld from them) has a right to feel betrayed, has a right to feel bitter about lost years and resources that could have been spent on truly worthy causes.
And it doesn't mean that we are always "bitter". Part of dealing with those emotions is learning how to put them to good use. Helping people get out of the JWs who don't want to stay in the JWs is putting that anger and bitterness to better use. Imagine how lost you'd feel if you had nobody to talk to, yet still wanted to leave the JWs. It's the people who are here providing that informal support that make the way out a much less frightening prospect for a lot of people who want to leave the JWs.
JWN (formerly JWD) wasn't around when Mr Scully and I were trying to leave the JWs. But I lucked into a cool little band of ex-JWs on an email list of 18 people who kindly invited me to join their conversations. They were the ones who helped me see that I wasn't going to turn into a pillar of salt, or get destroyed at Armageddon™, and who validated all the doubts that I had. Without them, I might still be one of the walking wounded, still thinking that the JWs might be right, but not having the stomach to deal with their nastiness at the local level. Because of them, I'm an exJW hoping to someday be an ex-exJW.

JWs came to my door asking for deaf people
by sabastious intwo ladies came to my door asking for deaf people.
it was a wham-bam-thank-ya man type of approach, they seemed eager to get to the next door.. all i gathered from their presentation, if i were just a normal householder, was that they were from some sort of religious group (they did not give their name) and that they wanted me to freely give out names and phone numbers of the deaf friends i know.
i said i didn't know any deaf people and they were on their way.. i knew exactly what was happening, but for most people it would just be an odd break in their daily routine.

comments from discussion:
I got targeted by them! I think they delbiratly target us b/c we (especially those of us who were mainstreamed to the max) can be vulnable to recruitment by strange cults/religions. They are delibratly targeting us b/c they are dying out....at least the hearing part of the congregation.
I got invited to that very meeting by two friends of mine. I didn't go though. They target the blind too. They have all their Bible materials and pamphlets in braille. I made the mistake of letting them come in a few times cause I wanted a chance to practice ASL, but then they kept inviting me to come to that meeting.
I got them knocking at my door all the time, HOW do they know which deaf person lives here! they don't knock on other people's door. I threat them with the police and they haven't been back for while. This is in the UK
They visit deaf people in hospitals, uninvited; a staff member at the hospital notified them. They knock on house windows when deaf people don't answer the door. They don't accept "please, don't come back" as an answer. They invite deaf people to Bible studies and give them the street address for the meeting without telling them it's a JW church. They knocked on my door telling me that a neighbor told them I was deaf (I'm hearing but I sign); that's not true because all my neighbors know that I'm hearing. I know all of the above from personal experience.
Had a few come to the door, I look out the window to see who is there, and don't let them in....they stand there for quite a while, finally leaving pamplets stuck in the door....
In past years, I've had several "run-ins" with them too....They are "pushy and manipulative people!"....And have gotten quite a tongue lashing from me... One of my childhood friends, her family were all JW's...she was a very unhappy girl! She finally left that Church!...I've no qualms to tell them to take their shyt and shove it somewhere else.... I was visited by them before. They all signed and were very polite. They even knew my full name, where I worked, who my father was, etc. etc. etc. Like I said, they were very polite ..... but knew way too much about me. They even talked/signed to me as if they knew me for years. Creepy .... -

Lady Lee and I had a discussion about this a while back - it seemed they were stepping up recruitment efforts for the deaf, and we wondered if it might be so they could take advantage of funding/subsidies from the government toward outreach programs. That way they wouldn't need to be "official" ASL schools, but they could still benefit financially by having deaf individuals attending meetings, etc.
Following the money makes more sense than it does for the WTS having any genuine interest in assisting the deaf out of the kindness of their hearts.
I wasn't able to explore this further, but I wonder if anyone has knowledge of these kinds of programs.

You should be able to tell someone in the hall is a pedophile because they do not say prayers.
by life is to short ini was talking with flipper on the phone the other day and i mentioned that the cobe formally the po told me that.
i have been told so many stupid things in this religion when it comes to pedophiles that i never truly thought about it before and i just said it to flipper in my conversation.
that is the stupidest thing i have heard.. so i thought i would do a thread about it.

There are lots of males who don't pray at the KH. Doesn't make them all pedophiles.
What about the pedophiles they aren't aware of?? Just because someone gets the Privilege™ of saying a public prayer in a KH / Field Service Arrangement™, doesn't mean they are appropriate around children.
Women aren't allowed to offer public prayers in a KH... are they all pedophiles too?

Sister are not to talk to the brothers alone
by life is to short inok this just hit me the other day.. i was a sister in my early 40 an adult.
a very bad child molester moved into the hall, and was starting to be used.
i knew of his background and could not stand him or stand to see him gaining the apporval of the elders and congregation.

With all the electronic gadgets out there, it wouldn't be a huge problem to have your cell phone / iPhone set to voice record a conversation, even if you did have another person there as an eyewitness to the conversation. That way your "trusted friend" can't beg off or conveeeeniently "forget" if the Elders™ start trying to intimidate you or them.

I'd like to talk to some ex-JW couples
by Mad Sweeney ini know a few of the guys here started to fade and managed to bring their wives and family along on the exit.
i will be sending some of you a pm or fb message some time soon.. are there any ex-dub ladies here who managed to influence your husband to re-examine and eventually quit the borg?.
it is very difficult to get to the genuine personality of an indoctrinated jw but if anyone can do it, a loving spouse can.

So this pic is from Insight on the Scriptures, Volume 2, pages 244 and 245.
The quote I mentioned was from memory, so not entirely verbatim. The exact quote on page 245 is:
While malicious lying is definitely condemned in the Bible, this does not mean that a person is under obligation to divulge truthful information to people who are not entitled to it.
