Smoke gets In Your Eyes.
by Englishman ini was just wondering, how many of us here took up smoking after we left the witnesses?
i have to admit that it was just about the very first thing that i did when i finally received that sumbeam of enlightenment that jw's were simply not anything special.
i drove out to a country pub, bought 2 panatellas and a half of red barrel, and spluttered my way through my first cigar n' pint.

Last thought on Iraq
by freedom96 inthere seems to be a lot of discussion these days about iraq, even on this site, which i think can be handled in one easy illustration.. if your family was mugged, and the mugger without question is going to shoot and kill them, but you have the opportunity to shoot and kill the mugger first, would you not do it?
no time to discuss the consequences with the mugger, cannot discuss with said mugger on how he would "feel" if you shot him, no time for anything.
if you do not react, he will kill your family without question, without hesitation.

A weapons inspector was interviewed a few weeks ago and he said that although Iraq were being stubborn and obstuctive, they collected NO evidence that Saddam has been able to rearm himself and definately NO evidence that he has weapons of mass destruction that the west fears so much.
American policy is the cause of the retaliation that people hit by sanctions, etc feel the need to fight back.
You cannot fight for peace you have to peace for peace!

Unfortunately I started smoking a couple of years after I stopped attending meetings.
I blame peer pressure!

I really don't agree with what the US and Britain are planning
This is just another part of the plan to force American policy on the world and Blair is going along for the ride, without the backing of the people I might add.
The Americans used Sept 11th as an excuse to invade Afganistan so they could build the oil pipeline that the Taliban refused to let them go through their country. American officials told them ' Take this carpet of gold or face a carpet of bombs' exactly what happened.
If you went up to someone in the street and punched him in the face and when asked why told the police it was because you thought they were going to hit you, you would be charged with assault! How can government act like that and get away with it??
There is NO evidence that Iraq offers any real or present danger to any of the western countries that are threatening to destroy it.
Is there any justification for bombing innocent people??? And don't forget that over 1 million children have died in Iraq since sanctions were imposed after the last gulf war.
And why is someone who flies a plane into a building rightfully called a terrorist and someone who carpet bombs innocent people under the flag of a sovreign country not???

Angelic protection-how does that work again?
by PopeOfEruke inwe read of recent events, 5 jw children killed in a car accident, jw's caught and beheaded and be-tongued (and not necessarily in that order) in the phillipines, a busload of witnesses burnt to death in spain on the way to the district convention (some years back).
and so on and so on..... yet the wt and bible too tell us "have no fear because jehovah and his myriads of angels are watching over us and will protect us.".
well, they do a pretty crappy job at it!

fe203girl, it was nice meeting you today along with the others.
The congregations always have their little tales of angels protecting people and they are exagerated beyond belief everytime they are told. Just to say that the God of 'unforseen circumstance' has managed to cock up my life, like letting me grow up a dub for one.
Great thread, keep up the humour

"The Serpent of Eden" or "Paradi...
by Atreyu in"the serpent of eden" or "paradise lost"
some have discussed the meaning of the account in genesis 3, about the serpent.
a pivot question has been: who lied, the serpent or jehovah?.

There is some seriously deep research here folks and I have spent far too long doing the same, much to the annoyance of my wife.
But I don't think you have to delve too deeply to see the bible in its true colours.
Who among us iss not horrified at the way a 'loving' God ordered mass murder whenever he felt like it? Even condemning Saul for showing a degree of mercy. Elijah's name-calling children getting ripped apart by bears etc etc etc.
The God of the old testament is a completely different being to the God of the new testament. How? What came over him and made him so forgiving all of a sudden?
The society in particular have made a big thing of the bibles supposed scientific knowledge that is proof of it being from God.
Well, can you answer why these are also found in the bible.:
1. The bible declares that the earth does not move, whereas we know that it does move very fast. (1Ch 16:30; Ps 93:1, 96:10, 104:5)
2. According to Genesis 1:16-17, the earth was already in existance when the sun and the stars were created, yet the stars have existed for billions of years before the earth was formed. This must be true as the sun is a star and our earth rotates around it.
3. The Genesis account has fruit trees being formed before the sun. They wouldn't have lasted very long would they?
4. According to the bible snakes eat dust ( Gen 3:14 ) or will eat dust ( Isa 65:25 ) but the fact is that they do not eat dust and never have.
I could go on all night but I don't want to be responsible for everyone leaving the forum through boredom

So how do you explain
by plmkrzy ini asked this q in another thread but thought the question might fit in better over here in bible research .
thinking out loud again.
it doesn't seem to matter what bible you read, unless you're looking for discrepancies in translation it's not easy to just abandon the big picture.

Just to answer from my own point of view, since I was brought (dragged ) up as a witness and left when I was 27, I can say quite honestly that I was as entrenched in the witness world as anyone.
But when I read the Guardian article on the Witnesses joining the UN, I reacted as any witness would and said to myself that it was fabrication and lies, but how wrong I was!
It was just like a long line of dominoes come crashing down and along with that crash went my belief that the Bible is inspired and anything other than a collection of books that were written, mainly, after the event. ( Daniel etc)
The contradictions in the stories in the 4 gospels alone discounts the bible being inspired.
For Example:
1. Did Jesus go to Cana soon after his baptism?
a. Yes. John 1:29-36 No: Matthew 3:13-17 (Wilderness for 40 days)
2. Did the centurian himself come to Jesus?
a. Yes. Matthew 8:5-6 No. Luke 7:3,6 ( He sent others )
3. Did Jesus heal the leper before going to Peter's house?
a. Yes. Matthew 8:1-3, 14-15 No. Mark 1:29-31 ( It was after )
I could go on. I have a list of over 100 contradictions in the gospels alone. If anyone says it is because they were written as eye-witness accounts by imperfect men, then that is not what the society or witnesses believe, but the bible is inspired of God, and we know he wouldn't make mistakes about were Jesus was and in what order things happened.
Sorry i've rambled on but I have no faith in the bible the more I look at it and if this makes me a bad person then I know i'm in the right place.

Excellant. Brought me out in goosebumps just thinking about it.
I once heard of a householder, asking a witness after seeing the witnesses working (sorry you can't call it working)
in the evening, if Jehovah's Witnesses were the ones that had prayer meetings under lampposts.
You always see a group of dubs gathered around a lampost in the dusk exchanging excuses for a ministry.

Great talk at the KH today
by searcher ini went to a kh near me today, they had a guy from london bethel talking.
he had some interesting things to say.. he did the talk in two parts, in the first half hour he was comparing 'this system of things with the titanic, and saying a lot about how the people on the titanic were carrying on normaly when the ship hit the berg.
then he went on about people had to 1, believe that the ship would sink and 2, have faith that the lifeboats would save them.

Plus there weren't enough lifeboats so no amount of faith in being saved by one would really matter for the rank and file or second/third class traveller.
Trust the society to pick an illustration that suits them beautifully!
