i know this has been discussed before but i think a fresh thread on this will be enjoyable.
I feel pretty bad about bad-mouthing Alastair Campbell now...oh well he's in heaven with all the food he can eat now.
He was a jolly man and didn't give a toss about the elders so maybe he wasn't a bad overseer, just bad in the eyes of those that asked him for help.
jehovah's witnesses will often scoff with scornful disdain at young earth creationists for believing that the "days" in genesis are literal and that the entire universe is only about 6 to 10 thousand years old.
what about the ages of rocks measured in the millions?
light from stars millions of light years away?
To those who say that the creation account is accurate and that the sequence of events in Genesis chapter one is correct, just ask them if trees and plants can live without sunlight...well why was the vegetation created and then the sun and moon created later?
Its a bit simplistic but gets the point over.
the elders feel obliged to have you work on at least, something.
what did they tell you?
I was working on new kingdom halls for the regional building commitee. I worked from Friday afternoon till Sunday afternoon, all over the country, for over 2 years, new hall every 2-4 weeks. (i'm a qualified joiner)
Then the elders in the hall said that the only reason they weren't making me a Min. servant was that my hours weren't enough. When I pointed out that I worked on new halls for over 24 hours each weekend they said that this couldn't be counted as service.!
Then when I was working on the halls we had to watch the local brothers come along on a Sunday afternoon in their working clothes as if they lifted a finger to help the whole weekend. The local brothers major contribution was usually to provide tea and accomodation, but you wouldn't believe some of the places I stayed in...but thats another story
when you were a jw, did you witness a rather large enthusiasm from your congregation for passing fads?
what i mean is, one dub would start something and everyone would join in?
this was especially prevelant with the women of the congregations.. for instance, for a while every female dub was undertaking this strange diet where they basically drink this really odd and particularly disturbing looking mushroom that they kept in their fridge.
Talking about assemblies, we had a talk by an overseer which had a slide show and he showed pictures of an international assembly and all the different people in national dress. One of my mates decided to go in full Scottish gear, kilt, sporran the lot, even though he wasn't Scottish.
He thought it would be a good way to chat up sisters, but he had to put on a Scottish accent on the whole time.
He was well and truly crucified for it when he got back. But it was funny at the time. He thought he was Sean Connery.

All the teenage brothers at my last hall went through a period of wearing really loud ties which hadn't been in fashion for years but they all thought they were really cool. The elders even started joining in, raiding their cupboards for old ties to try and be hip and keep up with the younsters. Walking into the hall was like a 70's disco sometimes, even though this was the 90's.
Again, this all stopped when an elder gave a talk about modesty and brought up the 'criminal' activity of wearing loud ties. Some of the brothers were that embarassed that they took their ties off straight after the meeting. All I could do was laugh...but it's sad. Control over what type of tie.
don't get sucked in by the propaganda that the usa is some kind of benevolent angel promoting freedom for a world suffering under ruthless dictators.. do you remember the shah of iran?.
do you know anything about how he came to power?.
have you ever heard of savak?
Francois. "In what country would you rather live than the United States?"
That sums up all the weeks of patriotic bullshit that has come from our pro-war American friends.
WAKE UP! Do what you did when you found out that the societies attackers weren't just some 'conspiracy nuts'.
RESEARCH! The press around the world has seen through America's plans this time but you seem to accept whatever the Bush administration say without question. What is the point of being able to see the manipulation of the Watchtower Society and the lies that they tell, when you can't see what your own government is up to?
You think you live in a free country? Have you studied the Patriot act and the new improved Patriot act II ? No? Well, I suggest you do and it may wake you up from your slumber. www.infowars.com (American site by the way)
Use some of that objective thinking that led you away from the Watchtower and put it to some good use. Supporting Bush is supporting a tyranical leader who has just invaded a country for it's oil reserves and stuck 2 fingers up to the rest of the world, and continues to threaten other countries if they don't do what the good ol' US of A says.
Pathetic.
