Love it, @Bobcat! From the video:
When the Roman Empire crumbled, Europe was besieged by plague, famine, persecutions, and a state of war so persistent, it was only rarely interrupted by peace.
this is the first time i've read through a watchtower magazine in about a year.
although i've been our only 8 months it really git me how crazy i must have sounded when i was a jw talking to non jws.. while other bible based religions talk about the 4 horsemen and back up their theories with other scriptures or historical evidence, the watchtower have taken so such steps.
1914 is thrown in there as if it's universally agreed that jesus started ruling since then.. even when i was a jw i never really understood why, if the pale horse represents jesus, why is he first?

The four horses of the Apocalypse present a picture of this existence.
The four horses represent life on this world. Every time a man gets on a white horse to "fix the world"... the other horses follow, Warfare, Famine and Death right behind. Always.
Caesar, Ivan the Terrible, Henry VIII, Hitler, Mussolini, Idi Amin, Lenin, Bush and now Trump. They all get on that White Horse to ride. Authority is given them like a cheap crown. And a bow. They are let loose to prove themselves.
The end is always the same. It is to the detriment of humanity.
But the second White Horse is no fake. It is Christ Himself. He rides in a righteous war. His angels ride behind, not three horses, but uncountable, all righteous. His crown is not a fake. His appointment is real and at the cost of his own blood, of which he is sprinkled.
The sky is darkened, the Earth quakes. As it was when the Christ died, it is again when He comes. It is the sign of the Son of Man.
This is the Apocalypse.
I like that. Another similar interpretation (but less apocalyptic, if ironically) is that the 4 Horsemen represent 4 archetypal phases of life: the young man, the old man, the sick man, and the dead man. These also align with the Tetramorph and the 4 angels standing before God with the head of a man, the head of a bull, the head of a lion, and the head of an eagle. And from there it aligns with Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio, and the 4 elements of water, earth, fire and air. In storytelling, it aligns with the transition in a hero's dramatic arc from an Innocent/Orphan to a Wanderer to a Warrior to a Martyr/Magician.
At first, you're reckless, you're riding high but somewhat aimlessly, you're "young, dumb and full o' cum". This is the pale horse with a rider with a sword protruding from his mouth, and the dissonance between that and Jesus Christ is kind of ironic. An older man is a bit more rational, weighing things in the balances. You become wiser but you also become sick and eventually die. But the cycle of life continues with the next generation, who get on their pale horse and do it all over again.
the other day i was doing some research about "1914" for a friend on my wt cd library (spanish) and i found it quite interesting that the number of times "1914" is mentioned in the watchtower magazine during the previous 3 decades has been dropping exponentially as follows.... 1980-1989: mentioned 854 times.
1990-1999: mentioned 492 times.
2000-2009: mentioned 222 times.
@Finkelstein, so when do they land on Bankrupt?
my wife and son were watching the january broadcast and one of the segments was about william tyndale.
william tyndale was a bible translator in the early 16th century.
i always knew that the org held men like tyndale, john hus and john wycliffe in high regard.

@Calebs Airplane, so was my grandpa and his father.
...
On an unrelated note, does anyone else get scales under your shedding skin?

Wonder what a JW would say to that?
The light got brighter... O_O
went out with my family and all they talked about was how terrible trump is and how he'll surely bring the great tribulation.
then they started going on about people supporting trump showing that america is becoming racist.
i don't consider myself a trump supporter but i disagreed that that was the reason why he won.
Political neutrality is a myth. Everything that ever happens in humankind is political, including to the choice to not vote. There ain't no rest for the wicked, and money don't grow on trees...

They love John Milton too, and the Watchtower seems to be written in a comparable voice to Milton's more academic work where he prooftexted against the Trinity.
But Milton believed in divorce and wrote kind of a famous poem where the hero is Satan.
Well, nobody's perfect.
there's a lot of criticism surrounding the jw's handling of chiild abuse within their ranks with a lot of it being well deserved.
but i'm interested to know how people on here think child abuse allegations should be handled.
there's a few scenarios below, the first couple are easy then it gets a bit more complex.
What makes the police so adequately qualified to sort these things out? Unless there is a real pattern and something that is actually verifiable, even if it's true, sometimes we have to let bygones be bygones. A single isolated he-said-she-said incident is a sad turn of affairs but not worth the publicity that it would bring.
You are aware that you are describing the status quo of the organization.
I'll bite. The single isolated he-said-she-said event is a sad turn of affairs that should be turned over to the police. Whatever the publicity, the intent is to prevent corruption and to explicitly put the individual ahead of the organization. At the very least, advise the accuser of the option to do so.
The status quo abhors bad publicity and explicitly puts the organization ahead of the individual.
I don't actually have a great answer to the objection that the accused person can have his or her reputation jeopardized. On a personal basis then, you have to protect yourself and be cognizant of any appearance of impropriety that could be used in an accusation, just like anyone else regardless of position.
I certainly don't want the legitimacy of an accusation to be investigated by representatives of an organization that is against the higher education that would qualify them to do so.
on the front of the 2016 year book it says that the watchtower is spending $200 million us dollars a year on special pioners etc if they get $1 billion us dollars from selling all the buildings at bethel in new york by my mats that gives them another five years or so.what might happen after that ????
:-).
If you get a paycheck, how long will it last?
But, you'll get another paycheck, right? And another? And more after that? The fact is that they continue to get donations, amazing as that is.
