  My thoughts on the subject. The Taliban hates us. Most of the people over in afghanistan hate us. If we attack Afghanistan, they will declare war on us. Basically, things aren't looking pretty for afghanistan.

  Everybody says this will be a different kind of war, but what kind of war will it be when everybody from a nation is armed and dangerous, and pissed at the U.S.A.

  I don't think the situation in Afghanistan is that simple. The Taliban are no Afghans, but outsiders with ties to Pakistan. bin Laden is Saudi. The Afghan people HATE the Taliban, but are under its thumb. Except for the resistance fighting Afghans who oppose the Taliban openly and control about 10% of the country.

  So why would all of the people of Afghanistan hate the U.S.? Seems to me most of them would look to us hopefully to help them get rid of the Taliban, just as we helped those same people get rid of the Soviets. Unless we start carpet-bombing the country, as some idiots in this country have called for, in which case I would imaging they would start to hate us.

  No, not everyone in Afghanistan hates us, no matter how much the demagogues in this country try to demonize them. How quickly we forget our allies, the country over which we stood in unity by boycotting the 1980 Olympics.

  I am in NYC -- believe me, what happened hit home to me, ok?

  All I am saying is that if we don't understand history, we are doomed to repeat it. Yes, hunt down the bastards that did this to us. Yes, strive to protect us from further attacks. But ALSO try to understand the motives of those who attacked us, who hate us, who protest against us. If we can help defuse some of those attitudes, we can also help protect us from future attacks.

  This is NOT to say we deserved what happened -- no one deserves this. Nor does it excuse their attack -- nothing can excuse it. But if we don't realize we live in a global society where our actions are perceived by some as good and by some as bad, we will be as clueless in the future as we were in anticipating this attack. That's what I DON'T want to see happen, which is why IN ADDITION to calling for justice in this case, I want to see thinking about future cases and where they might come from.

  I hope that helps you understand my viewpoint a bit more clearly.

  I don't live in Africa. I live in the United States in the year 2001. I don't care, in the context of the attack of September 11th about any acts tribal warfare and civil wars that happened half way around the world at another time.

  The attitude that makes the world hate America. Very good, that'll help.

  Life isn't fair. All wrongs can't be atoned for at all times. You want perfect justice and it doesn't exist.

  Where did I say any of that?

  Your insinuation that I only care about terrorism committed against white people is a cheap shot and perhaps you can confirm that all of the people killed at the WTC and Pentagon were white. I hadn't given it a thought, but obviously you have.

  Not a thought that occurred to me either. I wasn't say YOU were like that, but the fact that the world ignored an atrocity 100 times as bad as what happened here has to be explained somehow. And since many Americans seem perfectly willing to round up those who look like A-rabs (including Indian Sikhs), it's not a big leap to assume that appearance plays a part in prejudice. Whether you are like that too is not for me to say. You do have the Ugly American syndrome, but maybe you are not prejudiced against skin color.

  Your alligator tears don't impress me.

  Since I made none, no wonder you weren't impressed.

  I'm not wasting my time reading pacifistic, nonsense.

  An excellent approach! That way, there is no chance that you could learn something from a different point-of-view.

  Make a point so we can respond to it. When 6,000 to 7,000 innocent people are killed for politico-religious reasons, then the shear degree of terrorism has little if any equal.

  So when 100 times as many innocent people were killed in Rwanda during the mid-90s, the whole world got together to stop the slaughter, right? Oh wait, those were Africans, black people, so they don't count and the world looked the other way. Ah, but when America is attacked, that's different! Now we have to do something!

  Look, I hate this attack on the U.S. as well, and I want the terrorists and those who helped them killed. But it does no good to ignore the acts of terror that occur every year all over the world. It is this attitude of 'if it doesn't happen here it doesn't count' that makes people sick of American provincialism and isolationism. Bush & Co. spent the first eight months of his administration telling the rest of the world to basically go to hell, ignored treaties, skipped conferences, and basically said, "We don't need you." Then this happened and now they are running around asking for help saying "We all in this together." The rest of the world will help, but you can't blame them for rollling their eyes at the hypocrisy of it all.

  "Jihad" means holy war, not holy crime. Osama declared war.

  Why don't we just take him at his word?

  Um, because no one else has? He's asking for a Jihad, but one hasn't yet been declared.

  Tell me what is America, that requires it to meekly accept the murder of its citizens?

  Who's asking for that? This thread is about throwing out all Muslims as if they are all guilty.

  When America is gone, who will be America then?

  Where is America going? Quit with the jingoism and talk about reality. This is a complex issue. Simple solutions will only make things worse.

  I agree with Ann's statement that not all Muslims are terrorists but in this case, all terrorists are Muslims.

  And you know this how?

  Two weeks have passed, and the Muslim community in America has been pretty quiet about condemning the attack.

  They most certainly have not! I've heard interviews practically every day from them condemning the attacks.

  What jingoistic nonsense. A typically conservative rant (as opposed to the idiocy that would be a typically liberal rant). She wants to destroy America by making it something that it can never be and still be considered America.

  This is brutally unfair to the Muslim immigrants who do not want to kill us. But it's not our fault. It is the fault of the terrorists who are using their fellow Muslims as human shields.

  Last time it was McVeigh. This time it was Muslims. Next time it will be...? Hmm...better send EVERYBODY out of the country and then allow them back one at a time after they have been 'processed.' This is brutally unfair to the Americans who do not want to kill us. But it's not our fault. It is the fault of the terrorists who are using their fellow humans as human shields.

  Star Trek: Enterprise: What did you think?

  ok, i know that i'm not the only star trek geek out there.

  i know tons of dubs (ex dubs) that love star trek because it's one of the only interesting shows that they are allowed to watch.. anyway, did you watch the first episode tonight?

  i'm pretty sure with the one scene, that the dubs will be reproving some for masterbation tomorrow night.. oh and what's your favorite kingdumb song?

  For those of you not familiar with the original series, T'Pau shows up in at least one episode that I can think of, she apparently was some Vulcan big-shot who had parted ways with the Federation...she presided over Spock's "wedding"...does anybody remember this episode??

  I remember it ("Amok Time"). But this is not the same Vulcan character, despite the similarity in name.
