Remarkable, reproved for going to the UN website. Reproved for telling facts that can be verified (something I'm sure the elders did not do). Told it is better to turn a blind eye to the truth. Remarkable.

NEWS: I am publicly reproved over UN situation.
by badwillie inmy wife and i met with 3 elders for a "judicial hearing".. our crime: simply put, was talking.
i showed a friend the un website where the wts was listed as an ngo which then led to a 2 hour discussion of various doubts that we both have had.
my wife also showed a friend the un thing but also discussed with her a first hand account of a pedophile cover-up that we knew about in our former congregation.

Putin: Yes. But, they are necessary casualties of a very real war we are fighting and losing. How many Russians have already died because we are being sidelined as a world power?

Overweight JWs -- on the increase?

I just posted a new thread about the very narrow legal aspect of this case, and why innundating the Ohio office with all kinds of material won't help:

Note this excerpt from one account of the U.S. Supreme Court deciding to hear this Ohio case involving JWs:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63859-2001Oct15.html
The Supreme Court, however, has agreed to review one particular aspect of the case: the provision of the town's permit requirement that says Jehovah's Witnesses or other door-to-door canvassers must display their permits, which bear their names, on demand.
In siding with Stratton, the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals noted that "individuals going door-to-door . . . are not anonymous by virtue of the fact that they reveal . . . their physical identities."
But the Jehovah's Witnesses argue that the 6th Circuit's ruling conflicts with the Supreme Court's 1995 ruling striking down an Ohio law that prohibited the distribution of unsigned political campaign literature. In that case, the court said anonymity is often necessary to enable those who advocate unpopular causes or ideas to express themselves freely.
"Stratton's ordinance removes that shield of anonymity," attorneys for the Jehovah's Witnesses wrote in their appeal to the court.
Thus, though the Jehovah's Witnesses themselves eschew involvement in politics as a matter of religious principle, they are in the position of trying to strike down Stratton's ordinance on the grounds that it may burden political activists.
Please note, the Supreme Court is only going to hear one narrow aspect of this law, that of requiring a permit showing the name of the person at the door. Thus it will be tried on narrow First Amendment grounds, deciding whether the right to have the shield of anonymity in political actions outweighs the needs of the community to demand the identity of the person calling at their door.
The court is NOT going to be deciding if the community can ask JWs to notify the town ahead of time, or get a permit. It is only this anonymity issue. Therefore, past cases before the Supreme Court involving the JWs will probably not apply here. And this is not an issue of whether the town will allow JWs to preach.
If you want to get involved, as some are talking about in the "Child molestor at your door" thread, keep in mind that the court is only looking at a very narrow, technical part of this law. Talk about anything else, and you won't be doing any good as it will be irrelevant to the issue.
On the other hand, as the article says, there is a certain irony about JWs fighting for the rights of political activists to have their say! Anyway, if you want to speculate why the WTS is fighting this, focus on this one narrow aspect only. Personally, I'm not sure what their angle is. The only point I can see is what the WTS has itself identified, that of protecting the right for anonymous free speech. But it's not likely the WTS cares about a pure principle. They must have some reason for fighting this that would directly benefit them. I'm not sure what it is.
For those who want to force JWs to identify pedophiles among them, this law won't help. Printing the name of the JW on the permit won't help because pedophiles among JWs are hidden. That's the real problem, JWs hiding from the law. Once the law finds out about their actions, they get plenty of publicity from the state. With things like Megan's Law, their identities are readily made known even without this law. And if a convicted pedophile goes to the local municipal building to get a permit, they will certainly know who he is, and can decide for themselves if they want to let a convicted pedophile go door-to-door. Remember, that part of the law is NOT being reviewed by the Court. The only part that is being reviewed is whether, once the town decides that a convicted pedophile CAN go door-to-door (and why would they decide that?), his name has to be on the permit. Then it would require the householder to ask to see the permit and recognize the name before it would help.
That seems like a very narrow chance indeed. Remember, most pedophile JWs are under cover, and the state knows nothing about it. Putting their name on a permit won't help one bit.

if you compare the cases of child molestation and other acts with the stories of happiness and success ....the success stories will overwhelm all other negative stories........ .

a) And he knows this...how?
b) The issue isn't being safer than in other organizations. It is being safer than it currently is within the WTS. All it takes is one molestation to make it UNsafe for that particular child. Even if the vast majority of JW children never get molested, where is his empathy for those who are?
if you compare the cases of child molestation and other acts with the stories of happiness and success ....the success stories will overwhelm all other negative stories.......
A non-sequitor. You could say the exact same words about the Catholic Church. Until molestation becomes the norm, there will always be more happy stories than sad. Yet the WTS has blasted the Catholic Church for it's pedophile priests, even though the "stories of happiness and success" within the Catholic Church will "overwhelm all other negative stories." Since the WTS condemns others, by their own standards they are now being judged. It's only fair.
One molested child is one too many.

I remember all those years of working in food service. Certain food items would go fast, and other food items could barely be given away. Chocolate pudding? Popular. Vanilla? Nope. Burritos? Long gone. Hoagies? Plenty of 'em left. Orange juice? Went like hot cakes. I personally liked the orange juice that was frozen solid. You could suck on those things for a long time and cool off in the summer.
Hey, those of you who also worked in food service, 'fess up: Did you also hold back some of the good items when they were getting scarce, so you could have a nice lunch when your shift was over?

more of a realization..about 9-11
by lydia inhas anyone else noticed - or has it escaped the general population that the date of the attack - 9-11 is also the number that we in the usa use when we are in need of assistance?
i just wonder if that date was chosen for that reason also??.

Could just be a coincidence too. They probably timed it for the first clear weather day for flying, with the right type of flights to the West Coast, at the right time to have them be mostly empty, after preparing XXX, etc. That 9/11 provided the weather would then be coincidence.

puffsrule,
That is a good point. I have often noted that "gluttony" is the one Bible-named sin that is almost never used to DF someone. I don't know what it takes in the area of eating before you get DFed for gluttony, but I never saw the limit apparently. One cigarette and you are called before the carpet. Stuffing your mouth in front of everyone is overlooked.
As Kent points out, JWs do depend on drugs, but the prescribed kind. And of course they do get drunk, just not publicly if they don't want to take a chance of being caught (Englishman's Dub-in-the-Pub being a very notable exception). And you can eat yourself into a stupor and hardly be noticed. But one cigarette? Horrors!

ring,
Each childs job during the noon hour was to go around to each food stand and get four danishs, pack them back to mama, and move on to the next food stand.
ROFL! Yeah, I also worked in food service at that time, and I remember the roving band of urchins hording all the food supplies. It got so bad we had to tell them No a few times.
Nothing like telling a JW that the assembly food is now "free". Stand back!
