You Can't Have Purpose Without Intelligence, And?
by D wiltshire inyou can't have purpose without intelligence,and.. you can't have intelligence without intelligence.. .

if someone lived a trillion x longer than you, and had a billion x more reasoning ability would he come to the same conclusions as you?.

RWC,
Yes, but that's talking about outside influences. I'm talking about the luggage itself. It has a purpose, yet has no intelligence. No matter how much intelligence may exist around the luggage, the luggage does not have any, yet very much has a purpose.

You can't have purpose without intelligence
As always when I hear a definitive, I look for the exceptions. I wonder if this is actually true. What is the purpose of a piece of luggage? Right, to allow you to carry things easily. Does a piece of luggage have intelligence? No. Yet it has a purpose.
I think the initial premise may be flawed and needs further modification.

Is there a burning hell???
by sadiejive ini'm just curious what everyone's view of hell is.
i know that most of you were at one time jws and i was wondering if you still held to the no-hell doctrine or if you had found scriptural reasons to believe otherwise.
if the latter applies, would you be so kind as to share the scriptures that have enlightened you?.

Well, it's the only dusty old book I know that can last unchanged for so long, be scientifically acurate, have archeological evidence for essentially everything in it, and have every prophecy it has ever made come true
There's only one problem with that sentence:
It hasn't, it isn't, it doesn't, and it didn't.
As has been expounded upon ad naseum here in this forum and elsewhere.
As for hellfire, I don't believe it, but if there is such a place, and I find myself somewhere else after death, I will immediately demand to be placed in the fires of hell instead. No rational being could do otherwise, for it would mean enjoying a peaceful afterlife knowing that such an abomination exists somewhere under the control or allowance of the very deity that is rewarding you. It is unthinkable that a decent person could enjoy the afterlife knowing this was happening, and I would insist on joining the suffering as an act of protest.

Power, corruption, religion & politics
by Seeker ini find it amusing but disconcerting to see the blinders on people's eyes when it comes to politics.
here we are, most of us having been jws, but now we are fully aware of the corruption of the wts, yet we are blind to the same thing happening in politics.
this is especially true of the more conservative members among us.

Your Personal Self-Government Score is 100%.
Your Economic Self-Government Score is 50%.The top line is my libertarian bent, for sure. The second line is my sorta liberal, sorta not score.
Yes, people do change, and how foolish it is to vote a certain way because 'that's the way I've always voted' or because 'that's how my daddy voted.'

Expressing allegiance to a specific 'brand' becomes more important than having a loyalty to an indefinite, undefinable truth.
Ford vs. Chevy, writ large.
This is precisely why I refuse to classify myself politically. I decide each matter on its own merit.
I found something drahcir yarrum said interesting:
I used to be extremely liberal in my point of view when I was young and inexperienced and thought it mattered that life isn't fair. As I've grown older I haven't grown more conservative, simply more pragmatic.
I understand this completely. It is probably a journey most people make in their lives, for the young often are more liberal and then grow increasingly conservative. I find this at work within me too. Yet I find that I don't want to let go of my youthful idealism. Life isn't fair, and there isn't a lot you can do about it, but I'll try anyway. Why not? I keep waiting for life to beat my idealism out of me, but it hasn't happened yet.I sincerely hope I grow to be an old man -- with very youthful idealism. I'd rather bang my head against the wall all my life if that's what it takes.

Indeed, the very nature of a corporation is impersonal. It has no emotion, but exists merely to increase shareholder profit. Thus all sorts of "evil" things can be done by corporations even though they are not inherently evil.
A smiliar cycle is visible among the WTS. Individual brothers may be decent human beings, but their seemingly benign actions help support a system that crushes people.

I think what I object to most is being lied to. Politicians lie to us. The media lies to us. The WTS lied to us.
I object. And yes, you need some sort of political system to get along, and every other kind of government besides a republic gets corrupted to. I'm not saying not to try to get involved or to help. I'm just saying we need to do so with open eyes. You wouldn't take an Awake! article at face value. Have the same skepticism when Bush (or whoever is president next) opens his mouth.

Thanks for your comments. I understand what you are saying, and I did point out that on a more local level politics can work. But when you say this:
Even when reform seems to emerge ("We won't DF people who need a blood transfusion")
you have neatly described national politics too. The FBI tries to increase their ability to spy on U.S. citizens who are not accused of any crime. They get rebuffed, and claim to have learned their lesson. Then 9/11 happens, and they push through the same violation of rights that were earlier rejected. In other words, even when it seems the people have won a victory, they haven't. The powers that be are merely retrenching and trying again.
you later find out, they've backtracked and are just lying again("People who take blood DA themselves").Another example: The media helped bring down a president with Watergate. The people won? Nope, the powers that be just retrenched, bought up the media, gutted it, and now they get to do whatever they want.
