I respect Colin Powell - He's the only one I believed when he went to the UN and said Iraq had WMDs. Turns out he was deceived as well....Another reason I can't stand the Bush crew.
I like McCain. Bush did a real shitty trick on him during the 2000 campaign. This is one year that I'm not aghast at our poltical choices!

and if you make more than $200k/yr, you are "rich", and defined as such you will get soaked; thus, you will have little incentive to keep earning what you do now,--the opportunity to make a nice profit will simply not be there....and all of us working stiffs fortunate enough to make over $50 k/ yr, you better hold on to your wallets as well... we are going to pay for the social security bailout.

I did a thread titled: Focus of New Elder's School: How To Research - WTS Literature Only!!
This is what I wrote:
I posted this idea on another thread, but thought it might get some response as a thread of it's own.
This was the e-mail I just got about the new elder's school for POs only:
"My Dad's PO school wasn't new stuff, just a lot on studying, using the CD rom, etc. He loved it...."
Hmmm... "a lot of studying." In the light of the Sept. 07 Question Box, etc. I can pretty much tell what this school was, based on these comments: It was a weeklong course on how to use the WTS's literature, and ONLY the WTS literaure, to research questions.
That's it. "WE (WTS) have all the answers and we'll show you how to find them."
Just more demonizing of researching anything outside Witness literature. I can imagine the strong discouragement that would have been made of researching on the Internet or any other place besides the WTS CD.
The WTS's greatest fear is the open debate of ideas and free and full access to information. The elder's school, I would be willing to say, was just one more attempt to keep the rank and file from any outside influence, research or information.
Anyone else hear anything?

As I tell my Republican co-worker, Obama will solve all the problems that the clusterfuck known as the Bush Administration has foisted on America, turning us into a second rate world power with a government hated and despised the world over.
I never thought I'd hear debates about how much Americans can torture their POWs, for christ sake! We're America, not some South American drug cartel.
Look what we've become in 8 short years.
Bush and his handlers have managed to eat up our economic surplus, plunge us into devastating debt, sink us into at least two never-ending wars that have cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and are leading us to $4 a gallon fuel oil and gasoline prices while the value of the dollar drops like never before. All this while they made themselves wealthier and put the wood to the nations poor and middle class, giving the tax breaks to the wealthiest few. They also failed to protect us from financial institutions that used unscrupulous policies that have created the most serious housing foreclosure crisis since the Great Depression.
I am so much worse off financially than I was eight years ago.
I'm exaggerating a bit, of course. I know Obama won't solve all our problems, and I know that Bush can't be blamed for all our problems either. BUT Obama gives me a sense of hope that I might be proud of my country's government once again.

I also have to say that Freeminds was very important to me when I was leaving the Witnesses. Thanks for creating it.

In August 1981 I was visiting family in Park Rapids, Minnesota. I didn't attend any meetings, but I did contact whatever the local congregation was and I went out in service one morning.
A Pioneer couple showed up. That's all. They were a very discouraged young couple, and about mid-morning we stopped field service, bought a bottle of wine and went back to their place for an early lunch!
I've often wondered if they stayed in the WTS. They seemed less than happy in their Pioneer assignment!

I also don't think there would be any problem with parents being part of the PTA or PTO, except for interfering with meetings or issues with the holidays. Some elders might make a personal objection to it, but I don't think they have a leg to stand on.
When I was an elder, I would never have had a problem with any of this.
That engineer bro got his education before he became a JW.
If there is no WTS objection to it, where does the hypocrisy come in?? You guys are picking at the straw in your brother's eye.

told us we are no longer appointed by holy spirit anymore, i was looking for the letter and couldnt find it, i wonder if it was one of those letter read to us as apposed to left with us?

Welcome, d boon. I'm just north of you in Vermont.
I've never heard of anything quite like this, but it reminds me of typical WTS thinking.
Example 1: When an elder or MS is appointed, and they qualify, the appointment is by holy spirit. When they don't qualify for some reason, they are not appointed by HS, it's just the work of men, who appointed the guy by mistake.
Example 2: When the Governing Body says something, and it turns out to be accurate, they are speaking as God's spokesmen. When it doesn't happen as they say, they are just imperfect men doing the best they can.
When I discussed this with a CO and an elder a few years ago, I told them they couldn't have it both ways. Either they are speaking for Jehovah and guided by HS, or they are just a bunch of men. I told them, "You can't have it both ways."
Either way it's bad news. Say you're speaking for god and screw up, you identify yourself as a false prophet. Say you're just men making your best guesses, then you destroy the authority of the GB.
