  Barbara's experience was similar to my own in that she left and later was DFed. I left quietly, using the remodeling of an apartment for my Mom as an excuse for missing meetings at first. Then, after several years of having faded, the elders came looking for me, at the instigation of the WTS in the form of a CO. I stopped being so quiet after that!

  This is how Barbara explained her experience to me:

  "I left the org. quietly in 1998. Joe was an elder and sort of protected me from the other elders. I stayed quiet. I was not looked at as a threat, so everybody left me alone. Joe told those who asked that I was suffering from burnout! I was dfd just before Dateline aired for causing divisions which I hadn't caused yet."

  I know this post was not directed to me, so I apologize.

  I also recognize that this is your first post, so I don't mean to be harsh. But...

  Now, let me get this straight...you've left the Witnesses, and your main concern is that you give your 14 yo non-trinitarian, Christian association??

  You need to dig a little deeper, here. That's like saying I want my child to be a non-Rudolph, Santa believer. Sure there was Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, but enough with this Rudolph stuff!

  Give your child a decent, higher education. Teach them critical thinking skills, let them explore this wonderful world that surrounds us, while using a reasonable mind. Expose them to the ideas of the great thinkers - show them how Ghandi and Schweitzer lived, and the weaknesses of these men. Expand their universe - and your own.

  Your child will be just fine. But please, don't trade one form of irrational mythological thinking for another. Don't settle for that.

  I apologize if this is offensive to you, I don't mean it to be. It's just that religious thinking is such a limited, and limiting, world view. There is so much more to give your son.

  i've heard about a few studies that show atheists are smarter than theists in some aspects of life- science, maths, etc.

  i'm not sure how true it is though, so let's see how we do.

  i did my test at www.iqtest.com.

  Most probable truth - a computer link snafu.

  My take: IQ so goddamn high the computer crashed trying to compute it.

  The truth: I've tested several times at 140-144 IQ since high school.

  i was very troubled to hear that the "no snitching" policy is so pervasive in the african american community.

  if this report is accurate, this policy is a rule that is followed fervently.

  Last week, statistics were released noting that blacks were most likely to be the victims of crime by fellow blacks. This is the culture that Cooper was talking about - inner city blacks are most likely to be the target of crime by fellow inner city blacks, and the least likely to tell the police about it, according to his report.

  Is that the result of not reporting crimes, or the cause of not reporting crimes?

  I'm reminded of how the Bush administration had the strongest support for a long time from the country's poor, at the same time that it was the poorest people in America that were the hardest hit by Bush's tax and other policies, and they are the ones providing the majority of soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  At some point, someone stands up and says, I've had enough of this shit!

  That's exactly correct - the WTS has failed to see pedophilia as a crime. IN FACT, believe it or not, the Society had a policy, when discussing cases of sexual abuse of minors, of asking the elders how many of the body of elders felt that the child victim was at least partially responsible for the abuse!

  Get Barbara's CD, which presents absolute proof that this was their viewpoint.

  last night, a small group ( about 8 ) of teenagers gathered to go watch the meteor showers.

  a young man, known to all, drove up, asking what was going on.

  they told him they were talking about where was the best place to go watch.

  It's not always easy to know what to do. And especially hard when this kid is who knows where after your daughter calls.

  Tell your daughter that what she did was cool, and says a lot about her relationship with you. Me, I'd try to find this kid now and talk. Let him know if you hear it again, his ass is going to be reported to the police, scholarship or no. Then let him know he can call you for a ride if he needs one, anytime.

  Top down org - how true.

  Now, if it was really top down from the ultimate god of the universe, that would be something. But when it's only top down from a bunch of poorly educated old men at Bethel, who are guessing just like the rest of us, only with a lot less wisdom and experience, well, it's something else all together!
