i personally regularly went for temporary work at brooklyn then was assigned to the farm for a year and a half.
it was... one of the most bizaare experiences of my life.. so i wrote it all down (finally, after some 15 years) so i won't bore anyone on here with the details of the story - because bethel doesn't show up until chapter 15... and for you straight folks, it gets a bit gay in two places... but nothing gross.

One personal question to Simon. How is the present situation in Canada in regards to new immigrants? Any chances for Europeans to move/work there? I have lots of family that immigrated decades ago to Canada (and they seem to like it as none has come back to Europe, not the older ones or their children).
One thing that I don't understand is how some countries are better than others in assimilation. I noticed that Puerto Ricans or Mexicans that live in the US for a couple of months, suddenly started wearing flags and talking english to their spanish speaking parents. You don't see that in Europe. I know Turks that lived for 30 years in Germany and even after that only spoke a dozen words and gladly moved back to their home country.
Even if Life conditions are better in Germany than in Turkey. Humans are strange sometimes.

DOC: I love your comments, they are mostly balanced and have "something". I have a balanced view about America, as an European that lived there for a couple of years.
I just need to add that the generation of Americans that fought WW2 is not the same that is now acting in behalf "of the free world". Matter of fact, the US has to watch not to become a nation with a "fascist tarnish" (too much military, control, paranoia and religious bullshit). We all love America for what it has given the world - personally, when I lived there - loved the "American" art of "yes we can do it" (not as some Obama parole) but like in: "Going to the moon?" Yep. "Creating a worldwide network of computers?" Yep. And stuff like that. I just hope that more of that American spirit prevails over the "dumbed-down, Bible thumbing cowboy"-spirit.
I don't think you can justify present military spending with a good act that lies almost 70 years ago. In the meantime there was Vietnam, Afghanistan, Irak and some other "minor conflicts" that where not comparable to fighting Hitler. I might be wrong. Maybe some of these dictators could have become the "next Hitler", but I have my doubts.

The USA also brought as the Watchtower, Scientology, Mormons and many other nice organisations. But in balance of things we also got Google, MGM, Universal Studios and all the other stuff that I like - oh and McDonalds (not ironically!). So we're good. Just stop shooting at things and keep the carriers in your own waters.
I lived there and loved some things, hated others. But overall I can tell you that most Europeans that I have met don't want to live in the US.

it's basically a new initiative from google to bring the internet to far flung parts of the earth including parts of africa that are simply not wired up to the internet yet.. i'm not sure how the accessibility will work in terms of subscriptions etc, but google seem serious about it and early tests have been positive.. so, the question raised in my mind was, could this turn the tide against the watchtower?

Things like Cell phones have changed the game in developing countries. Yes, people need food, but they also need information to stay on top of the game to get food, water, sanitation. One practical example:
We had for centuries guys in african markets that actet as lenders. They come from the same family lineage and basically control the prices and the interest rates. They have the monopoly on these markets. Since the advent of cell phones, people startet contacting each other and borrowing money between themselves, leaving the "middle men" out. Also exchanging information about where to get rice, flour, etc. avoiding having to walk for miles without end. They toppled the "power" and this is a big step in the fight against poverty.
Let the ballons come. Only good can come from this. Also: Finally you will have Witnesses from poorer countries reading JWN.
given that i know how corrupt, dishonest and evil the watchtower is, i have wondered how to understand a personal experience i had many years ago - long before walking out mid-2009.. after an unusual series of many "co-incidences" on a particular sunday, my friend and i ended up at the door of someone who had been praying to god for someone to be sent to him, and who was expecting us.. i am still convinced it was by divine intervention, but cannot understand why a prayer is answered by sending representatives of an apostate organisation.. also when taking up residence in a foreign country, under very difficult circumstances, i twice ended up "inadvertently" moving in to homes just around the corner from the kh.
on one occasion it was about a 15 metre walk from my front door right into my seat in the kh!.

My experience:
