i came across this footage recently whilst searching for something completely unrelated and it blew me away!.
it's from the august 1974 convention at murrayfield, edinburgh and you can clearly see the stage set up still keeping the 6000 years and 1975 mantra going.. what makes this very personal for me is that i was here.
Thanks Lee for explaining that.

yes, i too have wondered how an assembly that is held in a fully paid for assembly hall, with no food service, could possibly have $10,000 in expenses.
i suppose the bethel speakers have transportation expenses - maybe $1000 or so.
as for rent on the assembly hall, well you have already paid for it once, why pay again?
I just read through the OP and came to the conclusion that all JWs are alcoholics . To me as a Brit every time l saw the word pub l though of a public house , it took me a few minutes to realise it referred to publishers. Then the post took on a whole new meaning.
My version would have been much more fun though.

I'm confused. I've watched the film and can see the numbers going up to 7000 on the front of the podium.
What am l missing?

mandated shunning is on the rise around the world with devastating effects on millions of people.
shunning that is mandated by organized groups to its members is a form of both physical and psychological violence against those people being shunned and cut off from their family and life-long relationships.
mandated shunning means that the shunning is ordered from the top down.
If the WT were persuaded to change its tune and find new light then shunning could be stopped.
New light that " advices " against shunning would soon be adopted as law in JW land .

so my mother passed on 20 aug 23 from the big c. i was there when she went.
that was indeed very traumatic.
i won't go to describe it.. dad went 17 years ago so there's just me now.
My condolences Punky . So sorry for your loss .
Jan .
if you don't measure up to the watchtower society ''high standards''... you might lose some ''special privileges'' .
miss meetings...lose ''privileges''.
don't meet the monthly 10 hour ''field service'' ...lose ''privileges''.
In my church we can't get people to volunteer 🤣. Maybe the leadership team ( warden and readers at the moment cus we are inbetween Vicars) should start to push cleaning and tea making as " privileges "

As a never been a JW my mind boggles that grown men and women are somehow bent into a mindset to consider being " allowed " to hold a microphone is a privilege.
How does this happen?

What about the judge? Talk about pouring adding insult to injury .

I posted earlier on that JWs believe that when someone leaves or is thrown out then that person will not survive Armageddon. So the believe that they must use any means to get that person back into the truth . That it is the loving thing to do , being cruel to be kind as the saying goes . So maybe they haven't been forced to shun but the brainwashing of the WT leads them to conclude that it's what they need to do to save the apostate. It is only by being in the WT truth that eternal life is attained.
The manipulation is very clever and crafty . However the finding of " new light " could be encouraged by sanctions such as loss of charitable status.

So , if a member of someone's family does something that warrants shunning and their family doesn't shun would there be no comeback on them ? Or does that depend on individual Kingdom Halls and the elders ? Can people be punished for not shunning?
Also I have always understood that JWs are told that because someone is outside of the Truth then they are doomed . So by shunning the " wrongdoer " to force them back into the Truth they are being loving .
Surely that is mind control at work and takes the guilt out of shunning if you can tell yourself that you are doing it for the ultimate good of person being shunned.
I suspect that if told that they will lose privileges then the WT would feel " new light " coming on .
