I have just reread that chapter and Paul mentions ' this present crisis ' not a near future apocalypse
He also says that if you do marry you do no wrong . Just that it MIGHT be better not to given " this present crisis '

Ernest , the only reason that those people sold their homes was because the WT convinced them that , as you say , they were in the last remaining months.
So when it all went wrong the WT should have apologised and made reparation
The WT couldn't have KNOWN this as people believed because it didn't happen.
Are you sure that no money was donated to the Org ? Any else want to say anything here ?

Westiebilly11 l am really not sure about your assertion that the WT haven't deceived anyone. What about 1975 wasn't that deception ?
They could not have KNOWN this because it didn't happen. You must know that faithful JWs sold houses and cars to donate the money to preaching work . Then when it didn't happen none of the money was paid back .
You ask why would they do that , which was my question. So perhaps l have answered, in part at least , mine and your question.
It's not just JWs who have done this of course. So maybe that is one motivation, getting money from followers.

Thanks Carla , l will read through this .
When the question was asked at my study group my answer was that it ( setting dates ) is about control .
Saying to followers that you dare not leave us now because Armageddon is coming . You don't want to chance being on the wrong side.
Is that too simplistic ?

So Pete , how would you answer the question? Why did the Org. do that , what was the motivation?

Verses 1-11 start with
" Now , brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you , for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night "
It's all about just being ready every day because no one knows when the end will come.
The question was asked " given that over the years people have tried to work out a date for the end what is the point of that? "
What would your answer be to that?

there is a new approach to ministry where the direction is to just talk to people and listen to what they want to talk about.
the new school for the midweek meeting is completely different and is all about the new approach .
even before the no reporting changes field service dropped right off.
The new direction is just to talk to people and listen to what they want to talk about.
How long would that last if the person wanted to talk about all things wrong with the Org l wonder

i’ve not been paying close attention to watchtower developments, but talking to a jw yesterday it occurred to me the society (yes, still use that term - old school) have been sending out mixed messages in recent years.
from what i gather, a few years ago the gb announced that during the great tribulation jws would be required to preach a “hailstone message of judgement” which involved telling people it was too late for them to repent and they were definitely going to be destroyed.
there were hints that this could be very soon, “any day now” preaching could stop and the hailstone message come in, kind of thing.
If l have this right what exactly was the point of telling people that it was too late for them and they were going to die ?
