  Its not the first year I didn't watch it (it's in the the same bucket as the Olympics - there are better things todo with your time than give it to these people). But without reading anything else about it, I can guess the theme of the night:

  I'm going to constantly say "gay" and pretend that it makes me clever and ignore that the law is about preventing pedos from grooming children. This is Hollywood, we're built on devouring youth!

  "Ukraine, Zelinsky Biden", repeat ad nauseam. Maybe throw in some TDS for old time-sake.

  Actress showing her tits in a revealing dress to get attention will claim women are objectified and not paid enough, even though she earns more than 99.999% of people on the planet.

  At least an on-stage fight is unexpected. Which makes me think it's staged for publicity to try and bolster flagging viewing figures by turning it into something like the Jerry Springer show.

  I read this after posting. Maybe I was off on the specifics, but right about it being a shit-show. Imagine being in a room where people are trying to come up with ways to resuscitate the Oscars ... and someones suggestion was "Amy Schumer" and they were taking seriously!

  Remember a few years ago when it was "Oscars so White"? Now it's two black guys fighting on stage ...

  Way to "represent", and also teach that violence is the answer to a joke you find insulting. I don't recall anyone getting up to hit Harvey Weinstein for anything he did (but lots of gushing praise).

  These are not people anyone should goto for life advice, although they think they can and should lecture everyone on what to believe and how to live.

  A nuanced look at the world shows there is such a thing as "soft power" and economic clout.

  I think that's a lie that the democracy-interfering CIA peddle to you (they all work in major TV news now if you didn't notice). Of course they want you to believe that they don't interfere with democratic elections in the US or other countries, but we know they do. The morally bankrupt can sleep easier by believing the lie that its "soft power".

  I completely agree that consumers (and by extension governments) have great power to influence change. If one supplier is guilty of abuses, and this becomes known through watchdog organizations, the pressure is on that supplier to change or lose business to a competitor who is willing to conform to norms.

  Empty words. For some things there are not multiple suppliers - the economics demand the cheapest, not the most ethically sourced, and the supply is inherently dangerous to those involved. The choice consumers get to make is which system their dollars go to support.

  Of course they are given misinformation, there's $$$ on the line.

  I might not set the timetable or chose the color of the seats, but if I stop a railway line being built I am in control of the railway.

  If the cost to transport goods goes up because I stopped infrastructure being built, wouldn't it be my fault?

  Presently the US has oil sanctions on Iran, Venezuela and Russia. These are on this short list precisely because they are dictatorships with bad human rights records.

  Meaningless shell game. It's like someone not wanting to spend money on groceries, and agreeing to pay the mortgage instead as long as their partner pays for the groceries.

  The same groceries are still bought. The same money is still spent. It even comes out of the same accounts but is just split up differently. The net spending is still exactly the same.

  Europe buys someone else's oil and the US buys the oil they might have otherwise. It's probably all handled at the spreadsheet level by notionally changing who owns what.

  But it's a decent con for the easily fooled to make them feel better that they are "doing something", just like campaigning for human rights while purchasing products that perpetuate slavery and misery.
