Regarding the quote on the first post: that is a good quote to use when JWs say that they don't claim to be god's only mouthpiece....

from a piece in a london publication:.
the proportion of men and women getting married is below any level found since figures were first kept nearly 150 years ago.. and the number of weddings held in 2006 was the smallest since 1895, when the population was little more than half its present level.. the evidence that marriage is withering away at an increasing pace was met with a furious response from critics of labour's benefits system, which disregards the status of husbands and wives and pays parents extra to stay single.
the causes of the collapse of marriage range from the rise in the western world of a highly individualistic ethic, to a profound shift in moral and religious attitudes, to the sexual revolution, to the widespread use of abortion and the pill, to changes in law, among other things.
Burn,
I think a lot of men are dead scared of getting taken for a ride. They get married, the woman stays for a while, divorces and takes all his hard earned crap.
It happens much too often.
SEXIST!
So it's women who run out on men and take all their hard earned crap? What a load of total and utter bullshit!
Firstly, Burn, it may surprise you to hear that WOMEN CAN EARN THEIR OWN MONEY. Some women even earn more than their partners! (as was the case for a number of years with me).
Secondly, men very often leave their wives (frequently for a younger woman) or get discovered cheating. Women do that aswell, but from what you seem to be suggesting its the men who always get the raw deal.
You are talking utter rubbish!
Some women have walked out on their man and took money from him, but some women have been left holding the baby / house / responsibilities whilst their man relives his youth. Some women (like me) were walked out on and left paying the mortgage.

i was at the eye doctor yesterday, after an emergency room visit.
i had an injury to my eye, fortunately minor, and my doctor wanted to examine it.
two witnesses were in the office waiting room and spotted me right away.
Thanks for the congrats!
Someone said that ExJWs and NonJWs are inconsiderate too. Well yes they are. However, JWs are the ones who go around saying that they're the only true religion and they act superior to everyone else as though God is only going to save them. So that is why we are entitled to make comment when they're obviously unloving.

I know exactly what you mean!
I'm pregnant and I met two JWs who used to know me. They kept mentioning armageddon all the time. Anyway, half way through the conversation, I mentioned that I'm pregnant. They didn't smile they just said "oh". No congratulations, no questions, no smile.
Then they had the audacity to mention armageddon again and how the birds will eat the corpses. I kid you not.

i was talking to a friend of mine that i recently got into contact with.
we were talking about beliefs and how i don't believe in any god.
she told me she still has the same beliefs, but just doesn't like the people.
The people that have an easy time leaving "the truth" are the people who never really leave.
Oh no! I don't agree.
I know a few people who still believe it and who have left - and they are seriously screwed up! They don't know which way to turn. They can't live in the world, they can't live in the JWs. They walk around feeling guilty all the time and thinking God hates them.
They're a mess.
Compare that to someone who gets the cult bullshit out of their head and actually develops their own personality. They often develop spirituality too (since there was no real spirituality in the JWs). Some of them lose their belief in god and end up feeling light and free and happy!

now i know the birthday issue has been laboured to death, but... as a 17 year old living in a non-witness family,it's kinda hard for me to never question beliefs.
now, i've spent the past hour or so scanning through the 07 watchtower library on my family pc, and havven't found a definitive answer, so would appreciate some input on this.
basically: the bible shows bday's in a unfavourable light, the pagan roots have been highlighted, and the worldly side too, i know all this.
Also here is a thread where I quote the JWs saying that Pagan customs are OK as long as people don't consider it to be pagan. You can always use this watchtower reference to explain why you celebrate your birthday.

Hi and Welcome,
You can find out about people by clicking on their username on the left of the screen, some people have profile information on there.
Because personally i still am of the opinion that if it's stemming from pagan beliefs etc, it's bad,
OK well you'd better stop using the calendar and using the names for the days of the week. They are pagan in origin. For example, January was named after Janus the God of beginnings. See this link: http://www.calendar-origins.com/calendar-name-origins.html
Also other practices that the JWs say are OK are pagan. For instance, wedding rings, the white dress at the wedding, the best man, cutting the cake etc. See here:
The tradition of wedding cakes is a very old one indeed. In ancient Rome, wedding guests would break little cakes of grain over the bride's head to shower her with blessings of life and abundance. As time went by, people began to pile the cakes and have the couples kiss over them to ensure fertility. Eventually, the piling of the cakes turned into the traditional tiered wedding cake of today.
Cutting the cake together is also a potent symbolic act. As a form of the Great Rite, the cake represents the feminine traits of nurturing and life-giving while the knife symbolizes the male phallus. This boosts the fertility wishes and solidifies the joining together of male and female energies.

Bridesmaids and ushers have their roots in Roman law which prescribed that ten witnesses be present at a wedding to fool evil spirits who, it was believed, were in attendance at marriages with the purpose of causing mischief and disharmony. The bridesmaids and ushers were instructed to dress identically to the bride and groom, in order to confuse the evil spirits who presumably would then not know who was really getting married.

Also JW's recently said that it was OK to use Pinatas at parties, despite the pagan origins. They said that what matters is whether people consider it to be pagan, and since they don't, it was OK.
You see the trouble is that JWs have double standards. They also have too many rules and make Jesus's yoke neither kindly nor light.

how can someone who calls themselves a christian reject those parts of the bible that do not sit comfortably with them?
without the bible there would be no christianity (now there's a thought) so surely it's a bit capricious to subjectively select doctrines you approve of and reject those you don't?.
for example, how can a christian possibly approve of homosexuality when the same bedrock of belief that gives you christ also condemns 'men who lie with men'?
Well,
I can understand Christians who disregard all of the bible except the gospels. They only pay any attention to the actual words of Jesus and forget the rest.

Study" is a way to enforce upon you to "agree with the doctrine" or else
gather evidence that you are rebelling.
I agree with this 100%. What you need to remember Cordy is that you would either have to humbly agree with this CO's wife, week after week, or you'd have to admit your real thoughts and get a judicial for apostacy!
I suspect this is the whole reason why they've suggested a CO's wife. She is "strong enough" to listen to anything you might say which is apostate. They wouldnt' expose you to an ordinary witness in case you made them doubt!
