  Filing for Divorce

  i got married while i was a jw and have been married for 16 years.

  the last 10 years have been totally loveless, and we have merely existed under the same roof, nothing more.

  now that i've disassociated myself we have nothing in common at all.

  I am glad you don't have kids...that makes it much easier, not to mention that you can get your spouse completely out of your life forever if you choose. If you had kids, you would be tied to your ex for a long, long time.

  You may not have to pay spousal support. If you don't, the more time that goes by, the better your chances of never having to pay it at all. The longer your spouse goes without spousal support, the harder it is for your ex to justify needing it.

  NeoMadman's advice is sound. Get yourself financially separated from your ex as soon as possible. Especially on any active credit cards. Make sure your name is off them after you separate; the companies cannot come after you then.

  Same with joint bank accounts. Legally, your ex can clean out the account if she is on the account. Also, your ex can remove you without your consent. Most people don't know you can do that in Ontario.

  From what I remember of Ontario Divorce Laws.

  Get a book called Divorce in Ontario...I think that is what it is called.

  Assets are divided based on what you have on your day of separation...so if you want your inheritance, divorce soon.

  Assets and debts are divided equally, based on day of separation.

  Child custody payments are based on your income vs your spouse's income: translation: the higher income gets screwed royally. Recent changes to Ontario's divorce laws do this. Child support is ridiculously high if your income is reasonable at all.

  If you have been married more than 10 years, your spouse can get spousal support, until her death....even if she remarries. The amount is not by a formula, but it can be hefty.

  Child support is no longer deductable off your taxes.

  To make the divorce final: one year separation OR adultery OR emotional/physicial abuse.

  Legally, a divorce agreement ends when the divorce is finalized...so get a separation agreement to handle child support, etc issues.

  If you do the paperwork for the divorce yourself, the cost is about $200. That's assuming you and your ex agree on everything.

  Did you ever attend a NonJW Funeral?

  my brother died suddenly.

  his funeral was in the catholic church.

  his 2 jw children and their offspring actually stood in the back of the church, behind a glass wall, and observed the service.

  I am amazed at some of the differences between my experience as a JW and others'. Perhaps Canada is a little more liberal than, say, America.

  Some older JWs will not attend a non-JW funeral for any reason...even the funeral of their parents.

  However, most JWs here have no problem attending non-JW funerals; the only restriction is that they don't participate in anything "religious". So basically, we just sit there....no praying, kneeling, etc.

  Some non-JW funerals are not much better than JW ones...the preachers basically reads from a book...including reading the prayer!

  In general, however, I have always preferred non-JW funerals as most are setup to honor, or remember, the deceased. They are not the "insert name here" format of the JWs.

  it took a personal event to make me want to do that for the first time in thirty years.

  blindly believing what i was told wasn't working anymore.

  I'm all for exposing the Society's hypocrisy, but how have they supported wars in the past?

  I know that Bible Students were allowed to fight in WWI, and "shoot into the air" or some such nonesense. This position is not hypocritical though; the anti-war policy came later.

  What Did You HATE Most About Being a Jehovah's Witness?

  Having to put a hold on so many good things in life just to attend yet another repititious meeting or go in field service. I figured that Jehovah was amazingly inefficient.

  I have a wide variety of interests. I figured that Jah built into us interests in science, art, mechanics, etc....then tells us not to use them.

  Having to attend 3 meetings a week when one would easily teach us as much? (OK...one a year would do).

  Jah knows when the "end" is....yet he has us preach that the end is coming for 120 years and it still hasn't come? With a little thought, he could have us preach door to door and still do the same amount of good...and we could each have a life beyond the KH.

  And I won't even talk about the "Jehovah's" view of sex.....which alone changed my entire moral code. The JW God is either very incompetent or a real bastard. Still building a Universe shows competence, I figured out he was a bastard.

  I could never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever do enough. I was a little mouse on a wheel. It is very very frustrating being a jw.

  I hated that too.....no matter how much a JW does, it is always "I am glad you did that....but couldn't you do just a little bit more?" Jah could never be pleased.

  in my first essay on common fallacies former jehovahs witnesses commit in reference to the society i explained the error of generalizing individual witness behavior to that of the entire society.

  the other errors i notice (to a certain degree i realize they are my opinions) are related to this, yet somewhat different.

  i have noticed that a lot of you here quote references of history from scripture, so my question is this.

  if you say that the bible is not the true word of god then how can it even be a true word of history.

  The Bible was written by people and its historical accuracy can be determined using the same methods as any other book. This means that some parts of the Bible will be historically accurate, and other parts will not be. Just because a book is not divinely inspired does not mean it is 100% hogwash.

  I am going to take a stab in the dark and say geographic isolation. That is, when groups are physically isolated for centuries, their languages will evolve differently.
