  JW's come knocking on Christmas

  well, after 10 months, the jw's finally came knocking on my apartment - on christmas day!

  in my head, i was going to debate with them, maybe even reason with them.....what actually happened is that for some reason, all of the emotional things inside of me came to the fore and i waited until they were leaving my apartment, i opened up my door, grabbed the tract, crumpled it into a ball, threw it at them and rattled off a string of profanities (which i won't repeat here, out of respect for simon's rules).

  i was really mad at myself for doing this, but at the same time it provided an immense cartharsis for me.

  of course I wouldn't have the guts to knock on any doors on Christmas.

  No guts required. Just a lot of inconsideration needed. I know, I preached on at least a couple of Christmases.

  You place literature at almost every door if you guilt them using the "on this day when many people think of Jesus" line.

  I stopped preaching on Xmas for three reasons: I felt bad for interrupting people's family celebrations when I could call on any other day. I also found that though I placed a magazine at every door on Christmas, the return visits got NO results. People could not even remember that we had called on them! BTW, it is surprising how many people are very drunk at 10AM on Christmas.

  The third reason is that I wanted a day off to enjoy it for myself! I mainly preached on Xmas out of guilt anyway. Let's face it, it is very rude.

  i have heard of this event before, and it was referred to in an xmas song.

  it is consistent with what i know of that era.. in 1914, on christmas eve, british and german soldiers laid down their arms (they were in a battle) and celebrated christmas.

  they exchanged gifts and celebrated together.

  I find it to be incredibly human, and that is why it is so touching to me.

  Achieving peace for two days is much easier than achieving long term peace. The logistics and consequences of the two are completely different.

  For example, I am sure that many of us can do things for two days that we could not do for a lifetime. As a simple example, try living with your ex-spouse for two days. Now try it for a lifetime.

  In 1914, on Christmas Eve, British and German soldiers laid down their arms (they were in a battle) and celebrated Christmas. They exchanged gifts and celebrated together. There was peace for two days, then they were ordered back into battle.

  I find this incredibly touching.

  i was just thinking.

  since christmas is about the birth of christ, i know dec 25 was not his birthday, probly born around late sept or early oct. i guess he wanted to be born right before the baseball playoffs and world series, just kidding.

  it was the early christian church that appointed dec 25th.

  today i received a big heavy box from the mail lady.

  it was a box of gifts for my whole family from xenawarrior.

  i was so surprized at her generositity, the kids were so excited and they loved everything.

  Best argument against a Jehovah's Witness?

  don't get me wrong, i'm not one to actively persecute jw's, i'm just wondering what you guys think is the best agrument/point to use when a pesky brother or sister just won't leave you alone.

  normally, i am willing to listen to their drivel out of respect (even though i have no respect for the wt) but there are times when i am not in the mood to hear them babble.

  i normally bring up the 1914 generation point, and it normally works.

  If my purpose is not to get arid of them but to make them think, I slip in one or two little anti-JW facts as casual conversation. And I dont argue the point or insist on it. I just drop a tidbit, and I am very agreeable on the whole. That way they don't run.

  Last week I explained to a JW about how profitable the magazines are and how the donation arrangement makes the Society even more money. I also explained how unreasonable the JW and Bible rules are for extreme situations. I also tried to be very balanced and fair to the JWs in that conversation.

  Though normally I am pleasant with JWs in person anyway.

  Back in the days when I avidly kept all my facts in mind..jws would blather about the end times. When I tired of this, usually after 3 hours, I would say..."OK, let's talk about if things are getting worse".

  I would mention how times today are better than before. Medica advances, unemployment insurance. When Dubs mention crime, i tell them that historically crime goes in waves and we are at a high part of the wave. I talk about WWII, etc.

  Within 5 minutes, the JW suddenly had to leave.

  Bible is God's word?

  id like to hear some *reasoned* explanations for why you believe the bible is gods word.

  ive been so fascinated by the study of *real* biblical scholarship since i began educating myself, i now find it incredulous that i used to take the bible as divine, along with all jws and tons of christians, including a good number here.

  so id like to entertain your very best lines of evidence that this is the real deal.. mox

  P.S. The Bible is without a doubt God's word only fools try to discredit it.

  Do understand that questioning things is a good trait. If the Bible is truly God's Word, it can survive any amount of scrutiny. Also, objective data will not contradict the Bible if the Bible is completely infallible.

  It is good to question everything from time to time.
