Interesting question.
- The short answer is: Yes, absolutely.
- The longer answer is: It's complicated, but still: Yes, possibly.
Minimus, I know you know what recently happened in Hungary when—on March 30th, 2020—the Prime Minister, Orbán Viktor, seized absolute power and essentially turned Hungary into a autocratic dictatorship overnight.
Here's a link to a thread I started on that and on which you commented:
Orbán did what tyrants always do, they use any opportunity that arises to grab more power. In this case it was the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here's also an on-topic case that's currently happening here in the United States:
A US appeals court ruled this week that Texas could prevent physicians from performing abortions because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In their ruling, the judges leaned heavily on a 1905 Supreme Court decision against a Massachusetts man who had refused vaccination during a smallpox outbreak (see Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 1905).
Students of history are always wary of situations like this because we know that people in power who are so inclined have often used them as opportunities to seize even more power as they take away individual rights.
I'm not saying that it will happen, only that it has happened many times in the past, and it certainly could happen again, anywhere.
Don't think it can't happen here. It can.

Covid 19 CENSORSHIP
by The Fall Guy inif anyone voices an opinion with which i disagree or even detest, i can either debate it or walk away.. the last thing i want is for someone to be silenced by threats.
however, it appears that some opinions on social media etc.
which contradict the official narrative are being muted.

Hi Minimus.
I like you too, even when we don’t agree! 👍
I totally understand that I come across as “thinking I know better than you or most people.”
Although that is not my intent, I get it. And I’m okay with that. Let me tell you why.
After being in a cult for 25 years and leaving it at the expense of having my two children shun me for over a decade, I have spent that time working hard to learn how to think clearly and scientifically and to detect bias and cultic thinking.
Whenever I see bullshit, I call it as I see it.
As I think you know, I am a high school science teacher with multiple degrees and a Master’s in Education. I earned all of these degrees as I was transitioning out of the cult and after leaving it.
It’s frustrating for me to see so many members of this forum—people who have left the JW cult and usually lost family members to it—demonstrate that they still have a cult mentality and can’t recognize bias, manipulation or propaganda.
As LongHairGal observed, everyone on this site is an adult (or should be). If they can’t stand the heat, then maybe they should stay out of the kitchen.
As a teacher and as a fellow ex-cult member, I’m just trying to share some hard won knowledge and some very painfully earned skills. If that sometimes comes across as arrogant, so be it. It probably only annoys the people that need it the most! 🤣

LHG: I wonder if somebody thought your posts to Minimus were sarcastic?
Could be. He asked a question. I answered it. Who knows what other people think. I try to avoid pointless speculation
LHG: That maybe you think he needs to be ‘schooled’ on how to read news maybe because he’s right leaning? I don’t know.
Again, Minimus asked a question. I answered it. Please don’t read motives or intentions into my posts that aren’t there. As you said, you don’t know.
LHG: I’m sure everybody that’s an adult on this forum knows the news outlets are biased and that you have to filter it all.
Well that clearly isn’t true. Many people on this forum openly acknowledge that they only consult highly biased and one-sided sources of news and other information.
Wasn’t that the point of Minimus’ question, to find out what news sources forum members listen to and read?

Wow!
I got a “Dislike” for saying “You’re welcome!” in response to a “Thanks” from the OP!
I’m beginning to think that Minimus might be right: “Some people take themselves so seriously. We can disagree with another point of view but there seems to be a few really pissed off people here. . . . Maybe they need some attention.”
Well said, Minimus. Well said. 👍

I subscribe to The Flip Side.
They provide regular, email summaries of both sides of important current issues and events—from the right and the left, Republican and Democrat—in a format that can be reviewed in about 5 minutes a day.
Additionally, I am a regular consumer of extra-national news services (e.g., news services that are from outside my country of origin, which in my case is the USA).
It's challenging to deliberately read news and "news" reports from sources which are often highly biased, but it seems to be the only way to try and sort through the bullshit to get some sense of what the hell might actually be happening.
It's notable that almost everyone this is highly biased on current issues only consults sources which confirm their pre-existing beliefs and biases (see Confirmation Bias).
This is bad for anyone, but it is particularly egregious for ex-cult members such as ourselves.

Minimus: Jp should I just stop responding to your comments? Nah, that wouldn’t be right or fun.
That is EXACTLY how I feel!
Kidding aside, I just saw your other thread about your best friend contracting COVID-19. I'm really sorry to hear that.
I hope he recovers completely.
