You repeatedly tell us that you two are very intelligent and very educated. So why keep doing something that causes you distress? That doesn’t seem very smart.

By the way, when new members join this forum they will often make an introductory post so we can get to know them. Forum members are generally very supportive of such posts and welcoming. When David did that two years ago, his responses were very favorable:

But when anyone jumps into a thread on a controversial subject they should expect a different experience. That is NOT the place to try and turn the topic into a discussion about themselves and their personal issues.

If the title of this particular thread wasn’t enough to warn you of its content then Stuckinarut2’s opening warning should have been:

Seriously, what did you expect? And why have you returned here to rant against unnamed individuals for offending your friend by posting on a thread that he never posted on and has nothing to do with him? Prior to your post a few hours ago, the only "David" mentioned in this thread is David Hume.

Please, if you feel the need to address the people that you believe offended you, then address them directly. Or better yet: let it go. You'll feel better.

Usually it's better to just move on with your life and don't look back.

Helping people that have left or are in the process of leaving is definitely an important thing.

"Activism," insofar is it has the ostensible goals of helping "True Believers" wake-up or reforming the cult are generally counterproductive and a waste of time and energy that could be better spent elsewhere.

We discuss, debate and deconstruct beliefs here, particularly those in reference to Jehovah's Witnesses, which is a fundamentalist Christian religion with strong leanings to an Old Testament/Jewish interpretation of the Bible.

Sometimes we are more or less objective. Often we are irreverent, particularly when we (as individuals or a group) have come to believe that said belief under discussion is ridiculous.

Lampooning BELIEFS is not the same as a PERSONAL ATTACK.

To echo Crazyguy's sentiment, if anyone finds such conversations offensive, then the best and easiest solution to their problem is this: Don't read them. Yes, it's really that easy.

Or, as my grandmother used to say, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!"

But upon reflection, I guess "Jehovah fucking Mary!" is a more accurate description.

Seriously, once you put some emotional and intellectual distance between yourself and religious beliefs, the sheer ridiculousness of them is painfully obvious. It's somewhat embarrassing to admit--even to myself--that I ever believed any of this nonsense.

in not so subtle hint, the gb likens themselves to moses, and those who disagree with the gb are korah.. paragraph 15 is actually quite damaging to the gb's argument though:.

looking into the evolution and history of how religion develope.

i'd like to study this further but i don't know what subject it would be classified as?.

i happened to come across a time article in 2008. it was basically talking about the high turnover in american faiths.

it mentioned the jdubs and highlighted the following point.. an even more extreme example of what might be called "masked churn" is the relatively tiny jehovah's witnesses, with a turnover rate of about two-thirds.

that means that two-thirds of the people who told pew they were raised jehovah's witnesses no longer are — yet the group attracts roughly the same number of converts.

These conclusions are ones that I have come to after a combination of:

30-plus years in a cult
Eight years in recovery
Two years of therapy
Three years of research concerning cult recover, and
Countless conversations with other former cult members and current PIMO members, (and not just JWs).

Okay. Argue away.

Ruby: An individual can be courageous even if they decide to live what you term bullshit.

A key distinction which you seemed to have missed is not that I think it's bullshit, but that the individual thinks it's bullshit and still remains captive to the cult, pretending to believe things which they don't because they are afraid. How is that courageous? Where is the moral integrity in living a lie?

Don't get me wrong. The fears are real. I know, I did it myself for six or seven years. But ultimately those fears are soul-crushing if we let them be.

I understand as well as anyone here the consequences of leaving a cult, but it's illogical and contradictory to say someone is "courageous," if they remain in one because they are afraid.

Courage is doing the right thing in spite of being afraid, not holding back because of fear and suffering in silence.
