My step-brother's wife's daughter from a first marriage was molested by her mother's brother on three different occasions. All of the adults involved are baptized witnesses, active in their congregations. Each time this poor child told on her uncle, who was seventeen at the time, nothing was done. Why? Because the grandmother begged her daughter not to turn in her brother. So, the daughter went to the elders of their congregation. What did they do? They privately reprimanded him and asked her not to turn in her brother. She never did report her brother to the police.
This poor child learned, I'm afraid, that there is no one to protect her, that she is unimportant, that no one truly cares for her.
Not even Jehovah.

she had choked and drowned her children to death, five in all.

Personally, I believe that a person can be both mentally ill AND still know right from wrong, and that this is the case with Andrea Yates. She should receive the death penalty. Oh, and since her husband KNEW she was ill (suffered post-partum after the birth of each child) and left her alone with their children, HE SHOULD, TOO! They should have been in daycare, with another relative, or she should have been supervised by a friend, neighbor or relative.

why is it that when someone comes here for the first time or that when someone says something that is pro-watchtower the members of this board decend apon them like a piece of meat thrown into a kennel full of hungry dogs?.

AMAZING: It's true. Always be wary of any research that is funded and supported by an organization with vested interests. The research is going to be biased 99.9% of the time. It's one of the first things they teach psychology majors! Studies funded by orgs other than the government are to be scrutinized carefully and usually reveal bias in favor of the supporting org. And as far as government-sponsored research goes, I'm one bean that says, "Scrutinize theirs, too!"
