the beginning of wisdom?
or, a sign of ignorance?.
first of all, the standard christian and jw definition changes the meaning of fear to respect, like a person respects the power of gravity.
LittleToe >>>>>"Love" is the bottom line, as seen in the teachings of Jesus, the two greatest commandments, etc., etc. Has man learnt this particular lesson well enough to progress further? Sadly, I think not, and unfortunately much of his religion epitomises this fact..."
SO TRUE. That one emotion called LOVE is not so hard to feel, as it is to show, LittleToe. And when people are taught to not show it even when they do in fact feel it, it causes PAIN to everyone who loves.
we all are identified by our names here on jwd.
some use their real names, and others pick a moniker that is their nickname or perhaps a few words from a song they like.. why did you pick your name?.
for instance,.
I got my name from "The Jerk". It's a movie with Steve Martin ( who plays Navin) in it and this is his reaction when he sees his name in the phone book. Here is a tiny bit of the script, in case any of you have never seen the movie ( I think the movie came out in the 70's, if I remember right)
Navin Gee Mr. Hartounian! Gee Mr. Hartounian!
(a phone book delivery truck drives up)
Navin Oh, my God! (Navin takes the book.) Thank you.
(he rips through the book, looking for something)
Navin The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!
Harry Well I wish I could get so excited about nothing.
Navin Nothing? Are you kidding?! Page 73, Johnson, Navin, R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book every day! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity, you're name in print, that makes people. I'm impressed! Things are going to start happenin g to me now.

i would like to find where the watchtower said in their books that jesus was coming "visibly" to inspect all religions in 1918-1919. .
and, i am looking for the quotes that say he "came, but invisibly" after they realized that he didn't come at all, and what proof they give for that statement.. thanks...hubert
Ditchy Elle,
Thank you for the reference! Here is somethign a little more recent also, that goes along with what you provided.
***
w89 4/1 pp. 11-12 Hear What the Spirit Says to the Congregations ***)"After 96 C.E., Jesus did not ‘come’ in any significant way until he was enthroned as King in 1914. (Acts 1:9-11) Then, in fulfillment of Malachi 3:1, he ‘came’ again in 1918, when he came to Jehovah’s temple to judge first the household of God. (1 Peter 4:17) He will ‘come’ once more, in the near future, when he "brings vengeance upon those who do not know God and those who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus."—2 Thessalonians 1:7, 8; Matthew 24:42-44.
And here is what the WTS says Parousia means:
***
Multiple Articles ***11
Pointedly, pa·rou·si´a means "presence." Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words says: "PAROUSIA, . . . lit[erally], a presence, para, with, and ousia, being (from eimi, to be), denotes both an arrival and a consequent presence with. For instance, in a papyrus letter a lady speaks of the necessity of her parousia in a place in order to attend to matters relating to her property." Other lexicons explain that pa·rou·si´a denotes ‘the visit of a ruler.’ Hence, it is not just the moment of arrival, but a presence extending from the arrival onward. Interestingly, that is how Jewish historian Josephus, a contemporary of the apostles, used pa·rou·si´a.12
The meaning "presence" is clearly borne out by ancient literature, yet Christians are particularly interested in how God’s Word uses pa·rou·si´a. The answer is the same—presence. We see that from examples in Paul’s letters. For instance, he wrote to the Philippians: "In the way that you have always obeyed, not during my presence only, but now much more readily during my absence, keep working out your own salvation." He also spoke of abiding with them that they might exult "through [his] presence [pa·rou·si´a] again with [them]." (Philippians 1:25, 26; 2:12) Other versions read "my being with you again" (Weymouth; New International Version); "when I am with you again" (Jerusalem Bible; New English Bible); and "when you once more have me among you." (Twentieth Century New Testament) At 2 Corinthians 10:10, 11, Paul contrasted "his presence in person" with being "absent." In these examples he plainly was not speaking of his approach or arrival; he used pa·rou·si´a in the sense of being present. (Compare 1 Corinthians 16:17.) What, though, about references to Jesus’ pa·rou·si´a? Are they with the sense of his "coming," or do they indicate an extended presence?13
Spirit-anointed Christians in Paul’s day were interested in Jesus’ pa·rou·si´a. But Paul warned them not to be ‘shaken from their reason.’ First there must appear "the man of lawlessness," which has proved to be the clergy of Christendom. Paul wrote that "the lawless one’s presence is according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying signs." (2 Thessalonians 2:2, 3, 9) Plainly, the pa·rou·si´a, or presence, of "the man of lawlessness" was not just a momentary arrival; it would extend over time, during which lying signs would be produced. Why is this significant?"I have to leave for work, but will continue perhaops tonight.
peace to you all,

Hi Hubert,
Looking forward to meeting you and your wife again next month!
Here is bit of what the WTS INC choose to publish regarding the subject and the truth regarding how Russell came up with his own teachings regarding the subject.
*** jv chap. 5 pp. 46-47 Proclaiming the Lord’s Return (1870-1914) ***
“One morning in January 1876, 23-year-old Russell received a copy of a religious periodical called Herald of the Morning. From the picture on the cover, he could see that it was identified with Adventism. The editor, Nelson H. Barbour, of Rochester, New York, believed that the object of Christ’s return was not to destroy the families of the earth but to bless them and that his coming would be not in the flesh but as a spirit. Why, this was in agreement with what Russell and his associates in Allegheny had believed for some time! Curiously, though, Barbour believed from Biblical time-prophecies that Christ was already present (invisibly) and that the harvest work of gathering “the wheat” (true Christians making up the Kingdom class) was already due.—Matt., chap. 13.
Russell had shied away from Biblical time prophecies. Now, however, he wondered: “Could it be that the time prophecies which I had so long despised, because of their misuse by Adventists, were really meant to indicate when the Lord would be invisibly present to set up his Kingdom?” With his insatiable thirst for Scriptural truth, Russell had to learn more. So he arranged to meet with Barbour in Philadelphia. This meeting confirmed their agreement on a number of Bible teachings and provided an opportunity for them to exchange views. “When we first met,” Russell later stated, “he had much to learn from me on the fulness of restitution based upon the sufficiency of the ransom given for all, as I had much to learn from him concerning time.” Barbour succeeded in convincing Russell that Christ’s invisible presence had begun in 1874.”
If you have the time, research your WT cd or let me know if you want me to post more here here if you don’t have the time. It will be slow as I don’t have too much spare time to type ( I can’t type well at ALL!), as I do to read. The WTS INC teach that Christ returned twice so far and will again for a third time. Which goes against what they teach to be pa·rou·si´a. Go figure!

i like "theocratic strategy", "new light", "the slave", and "lovers of truth"......anything that you find amusing?
"the immediate future" was always my favorite.
Along with "Jesus said" and "Jesus promised"...For example that the generation who saw world events changing in 1914 would not pass away before the big A arrived.
But hey.... it sounded a lot more believable than saying that "the WTSociety Incorporated teaches" that the generation who saw world events changing in 1914 would not pass away before the big A arrived. Why not just say "Jesus said" and "Jesus promised" ? ANd then find a scripture that backs up that "Jesus said" and "Jesus promised" it and then anyone can at the same time say that" It's not US who teach that, ... "God's Word,The Holy Bible does!"
But "the immediate future" is my favorite of all times. Research that expression on your WT cd. It's simply amazing!
found this on e-watchman.... http://e-jehovahs-witnesses.com/viewtopic.php?t=2911.
i just answered a question "off the top of my head" to a question which brought to my mind something that i heard at a talk at our assembly that has "bothered" me and i am hoping for some clarification as i would never want to be accused of what this topic is about .... .
it was a talk at our recent assembly that brought out a 'new one' for me ...or perhaps i just haven't heard of it as yet ... .
"guilt" is a word. It is also the greatest best coercion tool. (I'd have to say that we all probaly use it slightly when other people don't react the way we want them to, even as joke sometimes ). And all cult leaders know that it is the greatest coercion tool.. It's the ONE tool all of the greastest known cult leaders have used in the past, and the leaders of the biggest cults' leader's still use today. Just look at the guilt trip they lay on people who are still just "studies" of the JW organization for a time and won't get baptized in association with the organization! Wasn't the "knowledge book" released by the WTS INC. with the GOAL that "studies" will become "members" within 6 months? And that's not even mentioning yhe WTS INC teaching that if one is not "progressing" that they no longer have the freedom to pray to GOD and be heard BY GOD. Talk about being puffed up with pride even for an INCORPORATED BOOK PUBLISHING BUSINESS!!!
peace,
