does anyone else here have more ram than processing power?
my pc has a 500mhz processor and 512mb worth of ram.
though i will concede that for many people, Linux isn't the right decision for the desktop (some things are more difficult to do, and integration with running windows apps isn't perfect yet)...i think that for servers, Linux and other UNIXes win hands down.
let's not forget OS X is a BSD operating system, a derivative of UNIX. and there's MANY people using that now. Heck, even Microsoft uses BSD for their stuff..what do you think hotmail runs? :)

StarOffice is made by Sun, and is a VERY good office package. With WineX you can play virtually any windows game in Linux at the same speed. If you really need windows apps, you can use things like WINE that allow you to run them under linux. We have the gimp for image editing, and many people like it.
MySQL can do the same things MS-SQL can do, and more.

xander: newer xp's won't do MP without modification i've heard...but the old ones work perfectly though. Also, my workstation also functions as a server...I have 116 processes running right now...I run a database server, webserver, nameserver, mailserver, and ftp server on here. SMP is very important for my use...even if I might not reach the same performance as you on single threaded apps, I have that second processor to take the load off the first one when I'm doing actual work.

There's plenty of good linux apps. All our server-related stuff beats the crap out of microsoft products, and it's free!
Windows is a joke of an OS...Linux gives me the control over the system I want. If I don't like something, I can change it.

Linux 2.4. And yes, I know what I'm doing :) I write code for the operating system itself.
xander: there's no way you have me beat! I have the equiv of 3ghz of processing power! :p
I can type around 75wpm on a standard keyboard...around 80-85 on a laptop keyboard...the less I have to push down on the keys the faster I can type.

I can probably say with a certain level of confidence that I have everyone here beaten when it comes to computing power. I have a dual AMD XP 1600+ with 512mb (soon to be 1GB) pc2100 ECC DDR SDRAM, geforce 2 ultra video card, 80gb + 60gb 7200rpm harddrives, two 100mbit network cards, sound blaster live card,16x DVD 16x10x40x CDRW, and a tyan tiger s2460 motherboard.

I'm not sure I want one with apocrypha...aren't those the like ecclesiasticus and such books? the NIV study bible looks pretty good to me...i'll take another look at all of them. (still reading those other posts about the bible too)

Any opinions on bible translations you particularly like and why are appreciated. If you have a study bible yourself, you can talk about that too...from what I've seen though, the study bibles seem biased to certain religious faiths...I hope that's not the case for all of them...maybe there's one I haven't seen yet that a collection of scholars comment on?
