I read this article a few days ago now but some of the points were so good I had to go back and read them again.
I liked particularly the sections about remembering your core values and finding your life's work.
We always associate religion with a code of behavior.I have left my religion behind. That does not mean I am now an immoral degenerate.Rather it means I have the freedom to figure out what my own code is and live by it.It is a liberating and rewarding idea.
I am at a critical point in deciding where my future work lays.I see clearly that it is possible to have a purposeful and fullfilling vocation without needing to give myself or change myself for some outside influence.Life can have a purpose and I do not have to believe in God to have it. -

Going on the OFFENSIVE with relatives....
by LDH inwell, i just replied to reagan in another thread, and wanted to share my latest thoughts on family.
anyone please tell me if you have used this tactic successfully.. i am no longer content to wait to get bashed with witty little jw-isms.

There could be little positive benefit to come from confrontation with my witness parents. They are both at the twilight of their life and they have served the Org for most of it.They believe with their whole heart.
They love me.They grieve that I will not be with them in the new system. What good would arguing do now.Trying to show them that what they have believed all their lives is a lie. That there is no new system and all that they have worked and hoped for has been a waste of time.
Of course they would never believe this anyway. Not now.All I would do would be to hurt them and create conflict where what I want more than anything is a source of harmony.I do not want to hurt them and critisizing their long held belief would surely do this.
I want to get on well with them while I still have them.I do not want the "truth" to win by completely splitting us apart. It does split us in many ways as there is so much that we can't talk about. So much that they will never understand about me and the choices I have made.
They try not to bring up their beliefs too much and I in turn do the same.
When "the truth" does come up I try to respectfully tell them that this is not what I believe anymore and go no further.
It can be hard, especially when I feel digged at but even though they may never know or appreciate that it is I that knows better than they, I hold my tongue because in my case, nothing good could come from speaking out.
It makes me sad that they will both die believing that I have made a mistake with my life. They will never "get it". -

by spider ini just watched a louis theroux show.he was investigating charismatic figures who charge big bucks to help people "believe".i understand that it is good to have confidence in oneself - to be positive.saying "i can do this" to yourself like a hypnotic mantra and this will increase your chances.. they take it a stage further though.this guy was running a seminar for people who wanted to be millionares.of course it cost a lot of money to get into it.. having been a witness the techniques he used creeped me out.we have all experienced a particularly good salesman that has somehow made us buy something we didn't need but he was something else.he had a power over people.the way he spoke, the direct eye contact - he had obviously honed his craft of manipulating and controlling.he put others under a spell.he said people should put away their scepticism that was holding them back and just believe in him and what he was telling them.a sceptical attitude was a bad thing.they should have faith.alarm bells were ringing for me.. there was a new language that was developed.the language of positivity.people would say "no challenge" instead of "no problem".they did not say how they felt, they said how they wanted to feel.if their leg got broke the'd say "i feel great".this seemed to me reminiscent of the programming that we had as witnesses where what we thought and what we felt were disconnected.surely lying to yourself can't be a healthy thing.. what struck me most was how, with study and practice how easy it is to exert power and control over others.. evangelical religions use exactly these same techniques.without the religious context the same effects were being manifest.there was no mention of jesus but these guys were being controlled in that same kind of way - played like an instrument to the tune of one man.it was very cultic.at the end everyone was queing up to hand over five thousand dollars for the next seminar.
what is this power?
why does it weave such magic?

What is this power? Why does it weave such magic? I have not studied psychology and I wonder if their is a good explaination.
Whatever though, it is scary that people can exert such power over others.Thankfully though I think ex witnesses are particularly good at recognizing such tricks and not surcumbing. -

most HATED thing about the meetings ...
by alliwannadoislive inhey ya'll ... ain't tuesdays, thursdays and sundays even better nowadays ?.
i was wondering what it is that you hated most about the meets ?.
the one thing that used to really rile me was the pressure to control the children - the frowns and the disapproving looks when they were just behaving like normal kids .... the worst of it all for me was seeing any little person being taken outside and hearing the loud slaps even when the door was closed .... what is it that you least miss ?

Having to do a prayer at a moments notice. If there are five brothers at the book study - one reads, and one opens then you have a one in three chance. You get the tense stomach. You try to avoid eye contact but no!!!
"Bro....would you close for us." Damn -
in the beginning...
by spider ini just started reading the first few postings on this forum on pages 278 and 277.it was interesting to see how it all began.. the first messages were very guarded.noone knew what was to be deemed acceptable discussion.simon mentioned barring some apostate subjects.. it appeared at face value that all were current witnesses but i don't think this was true.. what was the real intent of this board at the beginning?
was it as innocent as simply allowing witnesses to discuss doctrine etc or was it to help witnesses see that their religion was false.. were there hidden agendas at first?
how many that claimed to be a witness was really just trying to gain the trust of others so as to help them think.to all that did and still do i have much respect and admiration for you all.. the board has evolved.when i read those first messages i was shocked by how polite and sensitive everyones comments were.this is not the case so much now.all the same there is freedom of thought and expression and this remains a very healthy thing.
