jw meetings and obedience to the society
by boy@crossroads inin what ways does each of the jw meetings play a part in instilling obedience to the mother organization?
or maybe put another way, how does each weekly jw meeting contribute to the overall jw mindset?.
this thought came to me whilst drifting in and out of the watchtower study this morning.. ministry school: helps jws strengthen their speaking skills for better defending their beliefs.

"Jehovah our Rock, our strength, and our might..."
by Fleur inin among the bags and boxes of keepsakes that my mother gave to me from my grandmother's belongings, something of an emotional nuclear bomb was hiding on me.
or more like a landmine; because i didn't realize the damage it could do until it was too late to do anything about it.
mom had given me first choice of most of grandma's things, knowing how close we were, and i had wanted the box of ancient k-mart brand cassette tapes, now 30 years old, which had recordings of her voice, and mine, when i was tiny.

Essie, your post has me in tears. Having lost my own dear grandfather several years ago, I can understand how that would catch you off-guard, especially hearing a "voice from the past". :( I can say with certainty that your grandparents are not disappointed in you. (((HUGS)))

Cute but very disturbing... Send your kid a letter from Santa...
by Elsewhere ini love to get into the whole christmas spirit thing, but i never take it to the point of lying to or deceiving children about it.
i try to teach kids that it is the spirit of christmas that matters... then i saw this thing.
parents are actively trying to deceive their kids by offering them "proof" that santa is real.

Having been raised JW, and told by my parents that non-JW parents "lie" to their children re: Santa, I was of two minds whether to perpetuate the Santa fantasy with my own babes. But hearing my never-JW hubby's memories of Christmas morning made up my mind for me. He and his sister used to have to wait upstairs in the bedroom Christmas morning while their parents went down and got coffee going, turned on the xmas music and the lights on the tree; and then their mom would ring the jingle bells and say, "Thank you, Santa! See you next year!" The kids knew then that it was time to go downstairs. Every xmas morning was the same; and they both have wonderful memories of this. In fact, the first year I celebrated Christmas, was when I was 18, and we did this then too, though we were all in our late teens. :) Of course we knew it wasn't real; but it was still a kick. So yes, Santa is welcome in our house. My son has a fantastic imagination; and since my explanation for Santa's seemingly-impossible feats (getting into our house when we have no fireplace and the doors are locked? flying through the sky?) is, "Santa is magic!", he will eventually realize that magic isn't real; and therefore neither is Santa. :)

Is it worse when they say it or worse when they don't?
by Sirona inwe met a jw at the supermarket.. he is the guy who my hub pioneered with for a few years.
they were "big shots" together when they went where the "need is greater" back in the early nineties.
so when we saw him he did that really annoying thing.

Ooooooooh, I almost wish one would talk to me just so that I could get asked that question. I would flash them the biggest, 40-megawatt smile I have, and proceed to tell them the full, rich extent of the happiness currently brimming in my life, thanks to a fantastic hubby, two gorgeous children, and wonderful friends and family.

Most of mine in recollection involve demon-possesed inanimate objects. A maternity blouse that was passed along second-hand to a pregnant sister; a dog collar of all freakin' things; the demon-possesed clothing that won't burn.

Marriage question
by starfish422 ini have a question for those who got married in a jw ceremony, or who became jws after being married.
did the elder marrying you, or those studying with you, counsel you as to what forms of sexual intercourse are acceptable within jehovah's loving organization(tm)?
just having a "discussion" of sorts on another board and i'm being challenged by a dutiful jw wife.

I did go on a bible study with my mom once where she mentioned that "certain forms of sexual behaviour aren't Biblical". I was 16; quite naive; and I questioned her later as to what forms these might include. LOL
She stared, stammered, and then managed to spit out something aout sex outside of marriage. Like, yeah, right; that's totally what you were driving at. **rolls eyes**
**edited to add: Rabbit, your story KILLED me!! :) -

Yikes. Don't tell me I'm going to have to eat my words. I was not married in the Borg; and I was quite convinced that sort of thing is included in premarital counseling (although certainly NOT the wedding talk! That's not what I was getting at. Omgosh, can you imagine! LMAO).

Prince Says...............
by professor in"you can live forever (and that's a mighty long time) in paradise on earth!".
is he baptized yet?
it would get him a lot closer to being an ex-jw and then maybe we could talk to him here!
I remember being in high school and telling kids at school how I didn't like his lyrics because I am a Jehovah's Witness. And the kids were all, like, "OH YEAH that's PRINCE!" And now here I am being shunned and he is a BROTHER? You have got to be joking.
No kidding. Isn't life just the freakin' wierdest thing sometimes. LOL
