Thanks for all the comments.
Do any of you think that JW's are arrogant or smug in their belief that they are the only one who have the truth?
maybe arrogance is not the right word but i can find no other that describes what i see.
the idea expressed by some christians on this board is that somehow god specifically chose them.
i'll quote perry as an example as his post inspired this thread.

Like I said, maybe arrogance was the wrong word. What word would better describe the situation when you claim god chose you and not me? At one point in my life, I was more than willing but he never came knocking.

Jeff, I've spoken to you previously about what God has done for me. He restored my ability to love and to trust. He gave me a new family. He made himself known to me. I no longer have to worry about whether or not he exists. I no longer need worry about death, judgment or about getting my needs met. Millions of others will tell you similar testimonies.
Why didn't god choose me? or Jeff? Please don't take this question as if I feel I am missing something because I don't. I just don't care for the arrogance.
during the dark days of the second world war , the monsters that ran a concentration camp decided to hang a child.. they hung the poor little chap so that it took half an hour for him to die, all the while making the other inmates look into the face of the child.. where was your god then ?
was he not strong enough to do anything or did he just not care ?.
if the first then he is a very weak god, if the second then,.
Miss Chievous
How many people suffer from things that have no connection with their own free will but result from someome elses?

Jeff, this is an excellent illustration!
I'm not sure that 'faith' in any of that has any foundation at all. If someone told you to keep investing in a fund for 6 thousand years that would bear some sort of miraculous result - a fund that you could never see, never confirm was real, never prove actually ever existed except for a 'document' of questionable validity that made the claim - how long would you pay into that account? In so doing are you showing trust in something or in nothing?
Some are never able to realize this is exactly what they are doing. I think this faith is just a defense mechanism because they cannot deal with the harsh reality.
this week's congregation "bible" study.
the drone running the show asked an auxiliary question (tm):.
"so, what could be some of the consequences if people weren't honest in reporting their field service?".
Since becoming an ex-JW, it has been my observation that the ex-JW's read the literature with much more depth than the actual JW's do. I think the same goes with the topic of this thread, we pay much more attention to things like this than the dubs, they wouldn't give it more than a passing thought and continue on with their fake reports, just like almost all of us used to do.
do atheists celebrate christmas, the celebration of christ's birth?.
if so, why?.
This one doesn't. I have no more need to celebrate Christmas than I do Hannakuh.
i know what the witness response is to this but what do you say now?.
IMO, one the the greatest things about threads like this, and this has really been a great one, is not that one poster will be able to convince someone with an opposing view of their errors or vice versa, but it is the benefit to those anonymous readers who may never have been privy to discussions like this. Although I heard of river blindness before, HG's expose of it really lays bare the issue at hand. It is one of the best arguments I have seen as to why believing there is a god out there who cares makes no reasonable sense, at least in the definition of reasonable that I subscribe to.
My thanks Minimus for starting it and for all who played roles in making this a great discussion.
there is a wonderful 4 part radio program on the plain truth ministries website this week about making sense of god's silence.
you can find it here www.ptm.org just click on radio and you can listen online or download free mp3s of the program.. here is the order of the 4 part series and topics discussed;.
1. is god really there?.
You don't need a god to be a good person and help others. What's the difference between a non believer who tries to make the world a better place to live and a believer who does the same thing on their own since their god is silent? I contend you don't need a god if you think your own efforts are what will eliminate the problems that exist.
i know what the witness response is to this but what do you say now?.
You know Lovelylil2, if the things you say about yourself are true, you really are a great person who is willing to do many things for others. I just don't understand where your belief in god or Jesus or the "church" you refer to really matters in that. Everything you talk about doing is something any non-believer could do. Really what connection is there with the things you do and with Jesus? Do you only do those things out of fear or are you a truly honest caring person?
