As I reflect back, I think my parents would have supported me if I had decided to college after I graduated in '72. Even though my father was the "king" elder at the time, I had mostly friends that were not JW's, and most of them went to college. Even though my parents didn't do any crazy things like quitting jobs to pioneer, the things I heard at the meetings etc, caused me to think "why should I go to all that work, the end is coming in '75" I didn't apply myself in high school either because of that attitude. That's what really makes me mad now. The negative attitude that is caused in me. I think it also caused the low self esteem and depression I have suffered with most of my life (until I read C of C and got rid of the guilt) I feel better now than I ever have, and even though low times come they don't last anymore.

ARE YOU UPSET THAT YOU DIDN"T GO TO COLLEGE?
by minimus ini have read of some people's bitterness because they were denied the opportunity to go to college.
during the 60's and 70's the society really discouraged any education other than what was necessary.
since the end was so near, especially around 1975, anybody that decided to go to "higher education" was considered very weak and unbalanced.

Lessons I've learned...
by WildTurkey inlets post lessons we have learned:.
i've learned that no matter how much i care, some people are just assholes.. .
i've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only suspicion, not proof, to destroy it..

DO YOU STILL LOVE JEHOVAH?
by minimus inlately, i notice quite a few comments of disillusionment.
some say they are no longer religious.
others say they are not sure if god really exists.others are trying to come to terms with life outside of the watchtower.

My whole life I had a hard time answering that question, just like the one about having a personal relationship with him. I now know why. It's because I am a person who is not comfortable with anything faith based. Reality based is the only thing that works for me.

Who Here Believes in God?
by The_Bad_Seed inpersonally, i do not believe god ever has or ever will exist.
i have my reasons -- i guess i could be considered an agnostic, rather than an athiest.
i was curious to see what the larger part of the former borg community believed, now looking from the outside in, rather than the opposite.

If there is a God, I'll believe in him (heavy emphasis on the if)
In the early 70's as a teenager I remember reading something on a favorite album of mine at the time - Jethro Tull's Aqualung. It was written like scripture and in Old English lettering and I suppose it was composed by Ian Anderson, it was not a song, just an addition to the album. I remember thinking I had to hide it for fear my parents would see it. I read it now with a different mindset. (just a funny sidenote-for a long time I thought it said Alan created God because that's what it looked like in Old English lettering-and of course I had no concept of man creating God at the time). At the time I laughed when I read the last line and I still do. Never was able to figure out the Aqualung thing, other than I know it's a term used to describe the gurgling noise made when one is dying. Any of you help me with it? Hope this doesn't detract from the topic too much.
In the beginning Man created God;
and in the image of Man
created he him.
2 And Man gave unto God a multitude of
names, that he might be Lord of all
the earth when it was suited to Man
3 And on the seven millionth
day Man rested and did lean
heavily on his God and saw that
it was good.
4 And Man formed Aqualung of
the dust of the ground, and a
host of others likened unto his kind.
5 And these lesser men were cast into the
void; And some were burned, and some were
put apart from their kind.
6 And Man became the God that he had
created and with his miracles did
rule over all the earth.
7 But as all these things
came to pass, the Spirit that did
cause man to create his God
lived on within all men: even
within Aqualung.
8 And man saw it not.
9 But for Christ's sake he'd
better start looking. -

So-called Bible Scholars........
by hillary_step init is not a difficult thing to do to criticize wts literature, however i found this comment in a recent wt very enlightening as it seems to explain the unscholarly nature of much of what they produce.
it also is an object lesson on how to manipulate a conditioned group of people by the use of 'trigger words'.
i have highlighted these expressions, which are deliberately used by writing, as we have previously discussed to 'encourage' the readers to adopt a patently flawed line of reasoning.

This article reminds me of a response my father emailed me about birthdays. I was telling my parents how I thought I had been mislead in my younger days and never checked out other viewpoints. I mentioned to them the mention of birthdays in Job. A week later I got this via email:
Some so-called "higher critics" in a desperate attempt to support the practice of birthday celebrations try to negate the flawless integrity of Job by claiming Jobs children celebrated birthdays. They refer back to Job 1:4,5 which relates "banquet days" which were held by Jobs sons "each on his own day" saying that "his own day" refers to his birthday and that they were having birthday parties. This, however, is pure speculation. More logically, the sons may just have taken turns, each taking his own turn or day to sponsor his banquet. This in no way proves Job celebrated birthdays. When Jobs sons "held a banquet of each one on his own day" it should not be supposed that they were celebrating their birthdays. "Day" in this verse translates the Hebrew word yohm and refers to a period of time from sunrise to sunset. On the other hand, "birthday" is a compound of the two Hebrew words yohm and hul-ledheth. The distinction between "day" and ones birthday may be noted in Genesis 40:20, where both expressions appear. "Now on the third day (yohm) it turned out to be Pharaohs birthday (literally, "the day of the birth (hul-ledheth) of Pharaoh"." So, it is certain that Job 1:4 does not refer to a birthday, as is unquestionably the case at Genesis 40:20. It would seem that Jobs seven sons held a family gathering (possibly a spring or harvest festival) and as the feasting made the week-long circuit, each son hosted the banquet in his own house "on his own day".
Thanks to my daily reading here I am now able to spot this manipulation. I wrote a response back highlighting 3 things just in the first sentence that were manipulative. I have as yet received a response or even an acknowledgment (I see him several times a week) Maybe he never knew he was doing it. (80 plus years old, Gilead graduate, you know the story) I think I'll bring it up sometime.

I know you are in St. Cloud, I grew up in Sauk Rapids. What school and restaurant are you talking about? Just curious.
I remember you mentioning the Red Carpet in another post, brought back alot of memories. I used to frequent the Hombre out on 23. It was a great place when the drinking age was 18 and I was 18.

How about the quote from the witness...
"We had enough faith to believe that they would see this was a violation of our constitutional rights," Goddard, 66, said while standing in her back yard, taking a break from cleaning her house.
Why can she think it's alright to have constitutional rights and then have contempt for the flag and country that makes it all possible.

My loyal Jdub parents were commenting about how some Catholics were upset becuase of this and felt they were being persecuted. My mother said it in a scoffing way, because she felt they deserve to be exposed.
If the dateline thing happens I'm sure I will hear those same words about being persecuted come from her mouth and I will kindly remind her about what she said earlier.
