by freakshow inhaving only started to study with a jw she has yet to inform me of these elders, the book she gave me says a little, but after reading this board i see there is more i have yet to learn.

Don't worry, as you progress, you'll meet them - it's part of the love bombing process. No, they don't wear anything special, just a cheap suit and tie usually. Yes they have jobs, usually employing other dubs - cleaning firms are a common thing in Dub circles (the working hours allow people to do more door to door work); I notice many here in Oz are in the building trade. The requirement to be an elder is simple: you must do whatever the WBTS says and apply their ideas and judgements, no matter what common sense and decency (and the Bible!) may tell you to the contrary.
For your own safety, I suggest you stick around here and have a hard look at the experiences of those who've not fared very well within the Watchtower walls, and think very carefully about throwing your lot in with this publishing company which pretends to be a religion and becoming one of their unpaid sales force.

An interesting point. I read an article the other day about how NASA is standing in the way of private investment in space travel, but still losing Govt money bigtime. Their defence: "If you don't throw more money at us, the squillions you've already thrown at us will be wasted!"
How many Dubs stay in for the same reason?

Metatron,
It was the Romulans, and the Enterprise sent the message in "Code 3" instead of "Code 4", because they knew the Romulans had cracked Code 3.

Francoise,
The term "pommie" is believed to have meant "Prisoner of Mother England" and was supposedly coined by the "currency lads (and lasses)" (the bastard children of the first [convict] settlers). So the first (white) generation born on Australian soil referred to the later unfortunate immigrants as "pommies"; the term later meant all English immigrants, and now refers to anyone from England.
BTW, New Zealand was never a penal colony (the Maori were considered too tough to try establishing a prison colony near), but they still call the English "poms".

I like the following question:
What should all Witnesses carry with them in case of an emergency?
I've got a feeling the answer isn't anything to do with speaking softly and carrying a big stick!

Although the 'Tower has made more than three failed end-date predictions, they have been spread out over a fair expanse of time. Since they only average about one failed prophecy per generation, the damage of such failures can be limited. It should be noted that the gap between 1925 and 1975, two pretty big dates in the calendar, were two generations apart; more than enough time for memories to have faded. It's unlikely that any new dates will be made for some time; although 1975 was one generation ago, the more recent failed dates of 1994 (the end of the "Generation") and 2000 are still fresh.
